Sand Creek Massacre 1864

The new reservation and Federal payments proved unable to sustain the tribes. During the Civil War tensions again rose and sporadic violence broke out between Anglos and Native Americans. In June 1864, John Evans, governor of the territory of Colorado, attempted to isolate recalcitrant Native Americans by inviting “friendly Indians” to camp near military forts and receive provisions and protection. He also called for volunteers to fill the military void left when most of the regular army troops in Colorado were sent to other areas during the Civil War. In August 1864, Evans met with Black Kettle and several other chiefs to forge a new peace, and all parties left satisfied. Black Kettle moved his band to Fort Lyon, Colorado, where the commanding officer encouraged him to hunt near Sand Creek. In what can only be considered an act of treachery, Chivington moved his troops to the plains, and on November 29, they attacked the unsuspecting Native Americans, scattering men, women, and children and hunting them down. The casualties reflect the one-sided nature of the fight. Nine of Chivington’s men were killed; 148 of Black Kettle’s………

As I walked down the path to my house I could hear a clattering noise as there were duckboards on top of the path. I couldn’t get in through the front door as sandbags had been piled up next to it. When I moved them I finally got into the hall and was horrified to see a rotten trench foot sticking out of one of my wellies. I went through the living room and saw, in the ash from the fire, (a) step print. In the kitchen there was some rotten bully beef on the table with fleas buzzing around it. I went up to the bathroom and could hear machine gun noise coming from next door. I used my periscope to look out of the window and saw my crazy next door neighbour shooting at a rat. I saw red, grabbed my bayonet from next to the toothbrushes and went round to sort the neighbour out. After all, I am President of the Save the Rodent society. Sadly I couldn’t get to him as he had put barbed wire all round his garden fence. So, I just grabbed lumps of shrapnel from one of my plant pots and threw them in his general direction.

Plus a few ideas…

Is it impossible?“A few modern thinkers… say an individual’s intelligence is fixed and cannot be increased. We must protest against this… with practice, hard-work, and above all positive attitude, we can increase our attention, our memory and literally become more intelligent and successful than we were before.”

Alfred Binet, 1911
