Welcome to our newest Secretariat member!
Please join me in welcoming Barbara Hammer to the Secre-
tariat as our Vice-Chairman and Jennet Lacey as Fourth Day Chair.
They both are longtime Cursillo supporters.
Barbara lives in Hattiesburg and attends Ascension. She is
filling the spot left vacant from when I stepped into the role of Chair
of the Secretariat.
Jennet lives in Columbus and attends St. Paul’s. She is filling
the spot left vacant with the passing of our dear friend Cindy Thomp-
son.
I am so thankful for Barbara and Jennet’s continued support
of Cursillo and their willingness to step up and serve.
I also want to thank Alison Duncan for her past support and
service as our Treasurer for the past couple years. Alison recently
resigned her duties as Treasurer so she can expand her personal
business activities. In addition to her excellent job of keeping our
books balanced, she added invaluable knowledge and energy to the
Cursillo movement. She will be greatly missed on the Secretariat.
That being said, we currently have an opening for Treasurer.
If it sounds like something you would be interested in, please drop
me a line at julieg1091@gmail.com .
Being on the secretariat is just one way to serve this com-
munity. Please fill out the time and talent sheet so we can know
where and how you are willing to serve.
Ultreya!

from a Cursillo
Weekend.
Through the Eyes of
A Cursillista
As pilgrims, we gathered from across the state—seekers coming together with anticipation
and apprehension. On day one, we were told by strangers: “We’ve been waiting for you”
and “I’ve been praying for you by name.” Confusion and trepidation set in as we were in-
troduced to roommates and told we must spend the night together in silence. On day two
we learned that some of us have secret identities (e.g., Deb) and others have secret loca-
tions (e.g., the pooh room). The love professed in words became manifest by outward ac-
tions that took our breath away. Like Mary, we wondered: “How can this be?” On day
three the truth was revealed in celebratory splendor. The Kingdom of God is upon us. The
love of Christ makes all things possible—even the miracles of Cursillo 128.

FOURTH DAY: A DAY FOR ALL.
Fourth Day has two meanings in Cursillo: each day after your three day weekend is the “Fourth Day”, but it is
also a day of review and renewal following the weekend. Fourth Day workshops serve to bring the entire Cursillo com-
munity together, and give energy and purpose to every Cursillista- old and new!
I had the expectation that my Fourth Day would be a continuation of the wonderful weekend experience. We met at
Gray Center, in the same space, with many of the same people, but there were changes that I didn’t understand or ap-
preciate at the time. There were strangers there, with different nametags; we didn’t sit at our same tables; we sang
different songs; and there were no placemats when we ate lunch! Since that Fourth Day, I have come to love Fourth
Days because of those differences. It is important for each of us to participate in as many Fourth Days as possible, mak-
ing new connections, being reenergized, and sharing God’s love.
The Cursillo weekend provides each of us a deeper understanding of our own faith and how to carry and share
our faith in different environments. Each of us needs to be reminded of what we have learned and experienced during
the weekend in order to meet the challenge of maintaining Piety, Study, and Action in daily life. The Fourth Day talks
provide this information by different speakers, and the floating group reunion is a valuable connection with strangers
on the same journey, whose paths would never have crossed ours had it not been for Cursillo. The Fourth Day work-
shop boosts our understanding and commitment.
There are many different ways to be involved in Fourth Days: the host church’s Ultreya provides food, speak-
ers and a musician are needed, as well as participants! I have gained new understanding from each Fourth Day I have
attended, and encourage each of you to come. Please put Saturday, October 17th, on your calendar. We will be gather-
ing at St. Andrew’s from 8:30- 3:00.

Meet Katharine Surkin – Cursillo Prodigy
I met Katharine when we attended Millsaps together. She and I didn’t hang out in
the same groups, but I always admired how friendly she was and how quick she
was to share a smile. Cursillo has helped nurture our friendship, and I was
honored when she asked me to serve as Head Cha Ha for #129.
Katharine first attended Cursillo in the womb, but she decided to attend again as an adult for #102 – what a lucky
woman to have a lifelong connection to Cursillo!! After graduating from Millsaps, Katharine attended law school
at Ole Miss School of Law, and she currently works for Judge Randolph’s office. Katharine and her husband, Joe,
live in Madison and attend St. Andrew’s Cathedral. She is a member of the vestry, avid supporter of the Holy
Smokers (Joe in particular) and the former Ultreya rector. She’s a huge football fan and loves keeping up with
Peyton Manning and the Broncos.
It’s been such a pleasure to work so closely with Katharine preparing for Cursillo #129. It’s been very special to be
able to share this experience with such a dear friend. Katharine has called an amazing staff, and I am confident
she will be led by the spirit as we welcome the pilgrims into the Cursillo community. Please pray for Cursillo #129
and consider sponsoring someone for the weekend.

Preparing Placemats: A few helpful hints
As we begin to prepare for Cursillo #129, it’s a good time to talk about placemats. As you may know, the weekend rector decides how many personalized placemats will be used for the weekend, and sponsors are responsible for getting the placemats ready for pilgrims. (Often Ultreyas will schedule placemat parties, so that responsibility doesn’t fall on one person.)
At Cursillo, personalized placemats are used as ice breakers – a way for pilgrims and staff to get to know one an-other during the weekend. Each Cursillo pilgrim is an individual and each placemat should showcase some part of that individual’s life or personality.
Think about the different activities your pilgrim might be involved in. Does she serve on the vestry or altar guild? Is he part of the LEV team or the choir? Consider creating a placemat that highlights the ways that your pilgrim is involved in the church community. What about hobbies? Does she knit? Does he love to fish? A placemat that highlights a hobby is a great way for a pilgrim to share something that he or she loves with the group. Other placemat themes might include family, friends, favorite Bible verses and, since this is the South, football.
Last, but not least, none of us is one dimensional, so try to create a broad picture of your pilgrim.
Placemats should be 10X14 and can be scalloped or straight. You can order them from Amazon.com.

Been awhile since you’ve attended a Cursillo event? There are always several opportunities during each Cursillo
weekend for former Cursillistas to catch up with old friends and to support our new Pilgrims. Please join us for
the following events!
Saturday, September 26, Pot Luck, Grace Episcopal Church, Canton, 6:30 pm
Bring a dish and enjoy some Cursillo fellowship! The Jackson Area Ultreya will provide drinks and set-ups. Just
bring your own adult beverage if you so choose. There will be lots of singing, food, and laughter- what more
could a Cursillista ask for?
For those who need lodging (sorry, the Big House is unavailable), we’ve secured a special rate at the Hampton Inn
of Canton. They are located at 133 Soldier Colony Road, just off Exit 119 on I-55. Just call (601) 859-8700 and
mention Cursillo for the discounted rate of $89 (their normal rate is $109).
Sunday, September 27, Wake Up, Gray Center, Canton, 6:00 am
Dig out your nametags, rosters and rainbows for wake up at Gray Center. We gather in the Dining Hall at 6:00 am
sharp. We’ll walk to the Chapel as a group and with our joyful voices surround the pilgrims with love.
Sunday, September 27, Clausura, Gray Center Chapel, Canton, 2:30 pm
Come and let the Holy Spirit “stoke you up” as Bishop Seage celebrates Eucharist and our newest Cursillistas
convey their thoughts and experiences from the weekend. Show your support for Cursillo during this closing
event!
We hope to see you there! Webb Morgan: webb.morgan@yahoo.com Fonda Devrow: fondalundin@yahoo.com
