Report on mange in Dogs for website with first cure
1.0
Mange is not simply one disease it is caused by several different
types of mites we will cover the basics on several different types
of mange and what to look for to make sure that is what your dog
has. It is always a good idea to take your dog to a vet to make
sure that it has Mange and not some other disease or internal
parasite. The treatments listed in this report do work and work
very well but Dogs as with humans different things work best
with each dog. We will cover what the vet will likely recommend
that the dog be treated with and after reading the report and
finding out what each does and the drawbacks of each allow you
to make an intelligent decision on how best to treat your dog
friend.
Demodectic Mange
2.0
Demodectic Mange also known as Demodicosis or Red Mange is
a skin infestation that is caused by a microscopic mite known as
Demodex Canis. This is a very small mite that is almost invisible
without the aid of a microscope. It has 8 legs and is spider like in
appearance. The female mite can lay up to 40 eggs during its
short lifetime and in doing so will burrow beneath the skin
creating a tiny tunnel or burrow to lay the eggs in. The eggs take
about 4 days to hatch and in about 10 days are mature and the
new mites are able to lay more eggs. The Demodectic mite will
only live about 21 days and in cold weather, when the dog is
outside, may only last 11 to 12 days. This dramatically slows the
growth of the mite population. Once the mites have hatched
they move out of the tunnels they hatched in and move back to
the surface of the skin or around the hair follicles and are then
able to breed, feed and move onto another dog or onto you if you
touch them or wait in the furniture they lay on for another host.
Once a mange mite finds a host, it begins to find areas of the
body to shelter in that are less exposed to attack by the dog. The
mange symptoms commonly appear first on the face, around the
eyes, around the corners of the mouth, and on the forelegs or
paws. The first symptoms of the mites’ infestation occur
because they trigger an allergic reaction from the mites’ eggs,
secretions, and feces. It is easy for the pet to become sleep
deprived and stressed due to the intense itching when it tries to
sleep.
The Demodex mite very commonly resides in and around the hair
follicles of the dog or puppies skin out of site and without
causing any distress to the dog and often will cause no
symptoms at all. Stress or an immature or damaged immune
system can trigger the mites to being multiplying rapidly.
Malnutrition can also be a cause of mites growing and the
immune system not responding. Even if you are feeding your dog
premium dog foods remember that the food they are getting is
made from processing plants using left-over’s that are judged to
be not fit for human consumption. Many people have fed their
dogs’ raw meat or just meat to get the immune system back to
working again. Use your own judgment on the diet but that is a
component of mange becoming an issue with the dog. Puppies
are often infested from the mother and before the immune
system fully develops they can just take over the dog. If the
Mange is healed, other infestations that occur later will show the
symptoms faster than the first time. The dogs retain sensitivity
to it.
Mange is highly contagious among other dogs and can be easily
passed around by direct contact with other dogs or objects
infested, so if the dog is allowed to run with other dogs that may
be infested then it can easily transfer back after it has been
cured. You are lucky you have this report since it gives you a
number of easy, simple and cheap remedies to make it easy to
get rid of again should it reoccur.
Demodex mites can be caught by anyone (yes even you) from
contact with the infested dogs but they will not survive long. The
mange mite when infesting a human will generally live in and
around the hair follicles of the eyelashes and eyebrows. These
mites are only able to live on very specific hosts. Dog mange
transfers to dogs, cat mange (Demodex gatoi) live only on cats
and human scabies live only on humans except for only a few
days and cannot reproduce without the right host. Transmission
of the Mange usually occurs only from the mother to nursing
puppies during the first few days after birth. It is normal for these
mites to be present and transfer from mother to pup is normal,
but some dogs’ immune systems allow the rapid growth of the
mites which can lead to the development of demodectic mange
1.2
This infestation in humans is usually called demodicosis which
has a Resaca-like appearance.
Mites can only live a few days when not in contact with the dog.
Any bedding toys or things the dog comes in contact with can be
bagged up for a week and all the mites should have died by then.
Pretend you are doing the same thing you would do if your child
came home with a case of head lice from school. The longer the
mites are off the dog the less the ability to re-infest a host seems
to be. However it is possible that if the mites have transferred to
you (they will itch you as well as the dog) they can be
retransferred to the dog when you pet them. This would be fairly
rare since they can not jump and you must be in contact with the
dog long enough for something as small as the period at the end
of this sentence to walk from you to your dog or vice versa. All
of the dogs bedding toys and area around the dog need to be
vacuumed and washed if possible and then dried. The dog itself
should not be infectious with the mites after one or two
treatments but if some are left alive on toys bedding in the dog
house etc then a re-infestation can occur.
4.0
Nearly all dogs have the Mange mites on them but the few that
exist do not generally cause the dog to suffer or have a reaction.
The problem comes when the dog has a weak immune system. A
weak immune system will allow the mites to breed like crazy and
literally take over the dog causing it to loose hair and have open
sores on the body that get pussy and smell nasty. This can
happen easily in the ears as the mites seem to like it there and is
an easy place for them to attack. The mites also like to be on the
legs and between the toes making it more difficult for the dog to
scratch or bite them off. The burrows that the mites make are
not long or deep usually less than an 1/8th of an inch long. But
the mites irritate the skin and allow bacteria to enter the skin
and cause secondary infections which pose additional dangers to
the dog. It is important to clear up the mites as soon as possible
and then to medicate the open wounds to help them heal up.
5.0
Some breeds of dogs have a higher tendency to get Mange than
others. Mange can be triggered by stress in the dog and by weak
immune systems, dogs who have those traits will be the most
likely to have it. These breeds of dogs that seem to have an
increased risk of as young dogs, include the, American
Staffordshire Terrier, Boston Terrier, Boxer, Chihuahua, , Bulldog,
English Bull Terrier, Miniature Bull Terrier, German Shepherd,
Great Dane, Old English Sheepdog, Afghan Hound, American Pit
Bull Terrier, Shar Pei, Collie, Dalmatian, Doberman Pinscher West
Highland White Terrier, Rat Terrier, and the Pug.
6.0
The symptoms of Demodectic Mange are first the thinning of the
hair around the mouth and eyes and on the front legs soon
becoming larger patches of hair loss which if left untreated can
cover large areas of the dog. Localized Mange in only a couple of
places can correct itself but generalized mange is definitely
dangerous to the dogs’ health and needs to be treated
immediately.
When the mange is no longer localized large patches of the dog's
skin can become red, sore, dark, thick and crusty, along with
oozing sores or pustules, enlarged lymph nodes, and deep skin
infections. The hair in large sections of the dogs’ body begins to
fall out and the dog is in a state of constant torment from the
itching caused by the mites.
7.0
The veterinarian will look for demodectic mange by performing
deep skin scrapings that allow the veterinarian to identify the
microscopic mites. This does not confirm that Mange is the
problem however because other diseases and parasites can
cause the same symptoms. Just the presence of the mange
mites do not conclusively mean the dog suffers from Demodex.
Finding abnormally high numbers of the mite is useful in
determining what is wrong. In breeds such as the West Highland
White Terrier, relatively minor skin irritation which might
normally be considered just an allergy should be carefully
scraped because of the ease these dog have to get demodectic
mange. The vet will likely want several skin scrapings to follow
the progress of treatment in demodectic mange. Yes if you have
the vet treat the dog it will require multiple trips to complete the
treatment. In my area that is about $60 dollars to dip the dog
and count on several trips to make sure eggs that have hatched
are killed and a re-infestation from other dogs or bedding has not
occurred so figure $200 at a minimum?
Localized or minor cases of demodectic mange is considered a
common puppyhood ailment, with about 90% of the puppies
getting well on their own with no treatment as their immune
system develops. Minor cases are sometimes treated with
medicated shampoos and not treated with harsh pesticides
aimed at killing mites as these infestations often resolve within
several weeks in young dogs.
Demodectic mange can also happen to other domestic and wild
animals. The mites are specific to their hosts and can only be
transferred to the same species. Each species may host to one
or two unique species of Demodex mites. For example there are
two types of Demodectic mange in cats. The first type Demodex
cati causes follicular mange the hair tends to fall out like that
seen in dogs. Demodex gatoi form of mange, causes an itchy skin
condition, but is still contagious only amongst cats. If you have a
cat with Demodex gatoi it must be treated weekly or bi-weekly
with a sulfurated lime rinse. Demodex cati can be treated like
canine mange with most treatments.
Sarcoptic mange
Sarcoptic Mange also known as canine scabies, Sarcoptic mange
is an extremely contagious infestation of Sarcoptes scabiei
canis, which like Demodex is a small burrowing spider like mite.
Sarcoptic Mange is usually diagnosed by Veterinarians using skin
scrapings from various parts of the body and they examine them
under a microscope to find the Sarcoptic Mange mites. The
Sarcoptes mites usually only exist in small numbers on the dog
and may not be found in skin scrapings because the dogs tend to
lick and chew at the trouble spots removing some of the active
infestation. Since the diagnosis of Sarcoptic Mange is not always
easy since the mites may not be in the scrapings the
Veterinarian will often just use symptoms along with looking for
the mites. Veterinarians use a simple trick to see if there is
mange when the tests do not show it. They manipulate the ear
of the dog and gently scratch it and see if one of the dogs’ hind
legs will move in a scratching motion as well. This reflex is
called the Pedal-Pinna Reflex and happens because mites grow
on the ear margins in nearly all cases. The method is rated as
nearly 95% effective in finding Mange even if that were the only
test given. Think home test? It is a useful test to when the
symptoms of Mange are present but few or no mites are found to
confirm the diagnosis.
The female Sarcoptes mites quickly dig into and through the skin
forming a burrow and causing intense itching and crusting that
can quickly become infected. The hair loss and crusting usually
first start on forelegs and ears. Skin damage happens with the
burrows becoming infected and from the dog's scratching and
biting the infected area. Dogs with reoccurring chronic
Sarcoptic mange are often in poor health.

Common Treatments (not the ones we recommend)
Treatments given for Mange are normally either prescribed by a
Veterinarian or the dog owner gets a cream or salve with
pesticides in it to begin the process of killing the Mange mites. I
have listed the standard treatments below and you can see what
a vet is likely to prescribe or what is available over the counter
and allow you to decide what course of action to take in treating
your dog friend. Most of the medications do work but the side
effects can make the dog sick or die.
In general Mange will leave open sores and pockets for bacteria
to collect in and do damage so infections often develop. Mange is
often treated with antibiotics and medicated shampoos as well
as parasitical agents. Some of the pesticides that are used by
veterinarians to treat Mange are discussed below.
10.0
Amitraz
Amitraz is an anti-parasitic rinse that is used and licensed in
some countries for treating canine demodicosis or the other
forms of mange. Amitraz needs to be applied weekly or biweekly,
for several weeks, until there are no mites detected by skin
scrapings.
Ivermectin
Demodectic mange in dogs can also be managed with
Ivermectin. There are only a few countries which license this
drug for use with mange, which is given by mouth. Collies and
Collie like herding breeds often do not respond well to this drug
and can have major reactions including death due to a defect in
the blood-brain barrier. Not all of them have this defect, the dog
should be tested for heart worm before this drug is used as
reports have been made of dogs dying within two days of having
it if they had heard worm. Other Ivermectin drugs that can be
used include Doramectin and Milbemycin.
Ivermectin is also sold under the brand name Stromectol in the
United States or Mectizan in Canada. Ivermectin was originally
developed to treat intestinal worms and river blindness. It seems
to work by paralyzing and killing the adult worms, and probably
works in the same way on Mange mites.
The side effects of Ivermectin include rash, itching, swelling and
dizziness. It has not been tested and is not recommended for
dogs that are pregnant or may be bred in the near future because
of the birth defects it has caused in laboratory animals. It is
thought that the drug is safe to take while nursing, though it
does transfer to the mother's milk.
Ivermectin is used as a treatment for worms in animals, and it is
well documented
that overdoses can be fatal in domestic and farm animals.
Permethrin
Permethrin is sold under the brand names of Elimite and Acticin.
Permethrin is often used in the treatment in the treatment of
Mange. It is a formidable pesticide and able to kill or paralyze
the mites and will kill over 90 percent of the mites on the dog
with the first application. Permethrin is effective but has
possible side effects which include itching, burning and stinging.
Permethrin is sold over-the-counter under the brand names of
Elimite and Nix Dermal Cream. Since it is toxic it is important to
make sure you purchase the five percent solution.
Permethrin was created as a synthetic form of pyrethrum which
is a toxin that originally
came from Chrysanthemums. Most gardeners have either used
or heard of pyrethrum and is a common insecticide for the
garden.
Pyrethrum is a nerve toxin and is considered moderately toxic to
humans, especially when inhaled or ingested. Some people are
allergic to Pyrethrum and should avoid it.
People who have an overexposure to pyrethrum may show signs
that include dermatitis, tremors, headaches, vomiting and lung
and liver problems.
It is thought that synthetic pyrethrum may be carcinogenic
(cause cancer).
There are reports that people who are sensitive to ragweed
should not come into
contact with pyrethrum since it may have an effect on the
immune system and has been implicated in cases of Multiple
Chemical Sensitivity.
Malathion
Malathion another common pesticide is often found in a 0.5
percent solution in a cream from. The brand name is Ovide in the
United States and it can be purchased with or without a
prescription depending on what country you happen to live in.
Malathion must be left on the body for a full 24 hours before it is
washed off to be effective which is longer than even most of the
other pesticide based Mange remedies.
It should however NOT be left on the body longer than 24 hours
because of the risk of overdose. Malathion is commonly used as
a treatment for head lice in humans, but it can also be used for
Mange if other treatments have failed. It is smelly, highly
flammable and can cause respiratory problems if inhaled, so its
use should be closely monitored.
Malathion is commonly used insecticide by farmers and some
cities to control insect populations like the mosquito, boll weevil
and fruit fly populations.
When using Malathion be very careful of overexposure because
it can cause a variety of symptoms including headaches,
difficulty breathing, diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness,
muscle weakness, confusion, blurred vision, even death when it
is ingested.
The Environmental Protection Agency revised its risk
assessment on Malathion to emphasize that babies and children
are 10 times more at risk from Malathion exposure than adults
are. The EPA believes the additional exposure to Malathion from
using Ovide would not pose an increased health risk, even to
children. Even though it is considered slightly toxic and has been
the ability to cause birth and developmental defects in rats.
Lindane
Was once one of the most popular treatments for mange, Mange
and lice which live on the human body and are mostly found in
the hair, although lice may also live on other parts of the body.
The brand name for Lindane is Kwell and is common in some
lotions and shampoos.
The use of Lindane is much less than it used to be but it is still
available by prescription, but the Food and Drug Administration
has warned that people can have serious side effects, even if the
drug is used properly. Seizures are possible if too much Lindane
is used or if a second treatment is necessary.
I believe Lindane creams and lotions should only be used as a
last possible resort treatment, and only after all other options
have been tried without success.
Lindane still is commonly used as an insecticidal treatment for
lumber, the treatment of head and body lice, mange and scabies
treatments. Lindane is a powerful poison, and as little as one and
a half teaspoons ingested would kill you. Lindane is as a blood
poison and is thought to be a carcinogen. It has been known to
cause aplastic anemia a form of leukemia, and causes problems
with the liver, kidneys and bone marrow. Lindane gets stored in
the breast tissue and is believed to be linked to non-Hodgkin's
lymphoma, in farmers who use it for pest control on livestock and
grain. Lindane is linked to an increase in leukemia for children
who have used it as a treatment for lice or scabies or as a
pesticide.
The use of Lindane has been completely banned in more than 40
countries and 20 countries have restricted it and banned it for
use in farming in the European
Union. The United States has not taken action against this
dangerous chemical.
When using any treatment the dogs affected dogs should be
isolated from other dogs and their bedding, and blankets and
bedding and the area they have occupied must be thoroughly
cleaned.
12.0
Over the counter and Natural Treatments
We will give you many treatments to get rid of the various forms
of Mange that may be infecting your dogs. All of them are
reasonably cheap and easy to obtain.
The first remedy that will clear up your dogs’ mange quickly is
very simple to make.
The best Mange Killing formula we have found kills the Mange
mites, ear mites, most fleas and insects that suck the blood out
of your pet and take the fun out of their life with nasty itchy
pests infecting his fur and skin. Understand that you have
insects with a fast life cycle and they lay eggs within days after
being laid themselves so any remedy will need to be repeated
and the dog cared for to make sure that the pests are gone. Not
only will the eggs on the dog hatching re-infest the dog but eggs
from fleas and other pests can be hidden in the carpets or
anywhere in the yard or house. Understand that any treatment
that you do will require several treatments some will try and kill
the eggs as well but think of this if the mites are deep in the ear
or close to the eyes they may not be all killed and several
applications will be required. I have had many reports of people
taking their dogs to a vet for 10 dips and still not being rid of the
mange. I have no way of knowing what your vet charges but
think ten trips x that dollar amount and be glad you have this
report. These do work and you will know quickly that your dog
is feeling better but do NOT stop after a single treatment. If you
bathe the dog in the formula twice a week for several weeks you
will have gotten rid of the pests. Understand also that ANY
formula from here or from the Vet is not to be allowed to be in
the eyes of the animal. Ask yourself do I want that in MY eye?
And be considerate. Now plan ahead read the formulas and start
your preparation but understand no matter what formula you use
you are going to have a wet dog running around after the
treatment if you do not want the wet dog laying on your favorite
chair or the furniture either do it outside or close the bathroom
door and limit the dogs movements.
12.0
The first and best cure for Mange in my opinion
The first and in my opinion the best is simply to mix Hydrogen
Peroxide with Sodium Perborate and water and simply bathe the
dog in the compound. Hydrogen Peroxide has the chemical name
H202. Humm sodium Perborate does not sound familiar either?
How about 20 mule team borax the famous laundry detergent?
That is it!
In order to make the formula you want 1% hydrogen peroxide and
the bottles that you will buy at the store all have 3% solution.
The trick is blending in one bottle usually about 16 ounces into a
big bucket. Then fill the same bottle up with water and empty it
into the bucket twice this gives you 3x16 ounces of 1% solution
so no matter what size bottle you use the measures would be the
same like for 18 or 20 ounce bottles you would just have more
solution. How much you make up depends on how big your dog
is. You will need less for a Fox Terrier than for a Doberman.
Then blend in some of the borax laundry soap or the sodium
Perborate you can find it. Add three heaping tablespoons of the
20 mule team borax to the mix stirring until it is dissolved. Just
keep adding until the borax does not dissolve. My heaping may
be different than yours or the difference between a measuring
tablespoon and a real tablespoon. That is it just mix and go get
Fido and you can begin to simply bathe the dog just like you
would normally using a good dog shampoo a flea comb could be
used as well if you have one. The ears and feet need to be done
but do not flood the ears and be careful around the eyes. Wash
the dog or dogs if you have more than one because each of them
will infect the others and carry the mites. Bathing the dog with a
good shampoo helps to remove scaling, flaking skin and
massaging some of the places that may be flaking off. Much of
the skin in the affected area can turn hard and black. When the
dog is clean then use the formula on the dog. Soak the dog down
head to tail with your cleaning mitt, towel or whatever you clean
your dog with and do it several times. You want to make sure
that every area is covered.
After the baths do NOT dry the dog let him air dry and that is part
of the cure. There will be a residue of the borax which should
help reduce the re-infestation and allows the solution to stay on
longer. Remember that the harsh chemical remedies required
you to wait 14-24 hours before it was washed off. Which did
require a second washing to clean the dog and if you happen to
be at work when the time ran out you could overdose the dog or
wash it off early and not get rid of the mange.
Now remember what you are working with here. Hydrogen
peroxide is what women use to streak their hair it can do the
same for your dog if you do not mix it. Now that would be a good
trade off to me if you valued the dogs comfort and health to
having what was left of a smooth shiny coat. If you do it in the
bathtub then plug the drain when you begin using your formula
and the solution that drains off can be sponged back on. It would
be a good idea to wear old clothes when you do this especially if
you are using the peroxide. You could use a hair dryer to dry off
the dog if they will allow it. Any solution left over can be put into
a spray bottle and used to spray hot spots or areas of high
infestation.
13.0 The formula
1 bottle of Hydrogen peroxide 3%
1 box of 20 Mule team borax laundry soap
1 bucket that will hold one or two gallons of solution depending
on dog size
1 gallon of water tap water if fine Use warm water and it
dissolves better.
This will make a quart and a half of solution if you have a bigger
dog might want to make two batches and just double the
numbers.
We have listed a table below with equivalent measures in metric
and American measurements since we help people around the
world.
500 cc = 1 pint or 16 ounces.
1000 cc = 1 quart or 32 ounces.
2 cups (16 oz.) hydrogen peroxide 3%
4 cups (32 oz.) water
Now there is an alternative way of making this formula and it
does work but does not use the hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen
peroxide is not the active killing agent in the formula it is simply
something that helps the borax penetrate into the skin to allow it
to get to the eggs buried under the skin in the little burrows the
females make. It does have the great ability to kill off any
bacteria that happen to be in the sores, pus pockets, open
wounds and burrows on the dog so it does have its advantages
but the choice is yours to make. This is definitely a case of more
often is better you need to do it about twice a week for the first
two weeks and once a week after that till you are sure the
Mange is GONE. Remember one bug can lay 40 eggs in 21 days
does not take long to re-infest the dog.
14.0
1 bottle of Apple Cider Vinegar
1 box of 20 Mule team borax laundry soap
1 bucket that will hold one or two gallons of solution depending
on dog size
1 gallon of water tap water if fine Use warm water and it
dissolves better.
Remember to leave the solution on the dog and just let it dry.
Some of the particles will remain on the dog and will flake off
and help to control the pests in other areas like bedding and play
areas.
Borax has Boron in it and that is what actually kills the mites.
The boron has a very low toxicity to animals about the same as
sugar. It is not that likely the pet will do much licking but if it
does there should be no issues from it. The toxic pesticides that
vets put on our pets frankly scare me and I keep thinking about
how they need one of those plastic cones on their heads to keep
them from licking.
If you happen to find sodium Perborate you can simply add that
to the water just like you did borax without the hydrogen
peroxide or apple cider vinegar.
Now for our European and English friends I have been told that
the Borax laundry detergent has been reclassified and may not
be available everywhere because of some government
regulations. The do have an approved substitute but I have no
knowledge of if it works like borax to kill mange or not and would
move on down the list and find another mange remedy that you
can use. Borax is good because it can be used safely with fairly
young animals and should have no health effects unlike the harsh
chemicals listed above.
In the US it is available at Target and Wal-Mart in the laundry
detergent section. You can look in hardware stores as well.
15.0
1) When your dog friend has mange and ear mites it is a virtual
certainty that they will have lots of them present in all areas of
the house that they visit. They can be present in the bedding,
carpets, and toys and even on you! Humans can have the mites
crawling on them. They do not live long but the Mange mites can
live on you long enough to transfer them back to your dog friend.
You can test if you have mites (scabies) if you itch after having a
bath or at night when you go to bed.
2) All of the areas of your house need to be treated or you will be
having a cycle of re-infestation every time you allow the dog to
lie anywhere it has lain before. You have to treat the whole
house and if the dog rides in the car that as well. It is going to
take a fair amount of time to wash what is washable and clean
what is cleanable to set aside a day that you can dedicate to it.
If you have ever had a child come home from school with lice it is
the same thing you do for that.
3) You are going to need to do a lot of cleaning in your house
including couches sofas, chairs, carpets, all the cushions and
beds in the house the dogs may have laid on which means about
everything? The things in your house that are too big to wash or
vacuum down can be bagged up and stored for a week. It can
work without all of this but the very best way is to literally bag
all your furniture cover it with plastic and keep it away from your
pet. Many people sprinkle the borax into the carpets and on the
furniture that has been wrapped up. I know of some who have
put plastic on every floor in the house and that worked well and
did not have a re-infestation issue. Whatever it takes to be sure
you have the bugs gone it all has to be done that day. If your dog
sleeps in the laundry hamper, closets where ever it goes needs
to be looked after. How much you do is up to you but the less
you do the more times you may need to repeat the cure. Your
dog is likely to be basically bug free after the first treatment or
two but can be re-infested from YOU touching him if you have
them crawling on you or contact with anything that does.
4) If you choose to choose to take your dog outside while the
cleaning is taking place which is a good idea then the dog can be
washed outside and treated there using the first formula or any
of the ones that come next. This works great unless it happens
to be winter in a cold part of the world and you do not want to
have a cold wet dog standing outside for hours after the bath and
the treatment for mange. If you can have the dog outside during
the cleaning so much the better if not put the dog into one room
and clean the rest not much point in vacuuming off the couch
and if you choose to put plastic over it then have your dog come
bounding back and lay on it again before the treatment
5) The house needs to be vacuumed and damp dusted using the
same solution you used on the dog (same cautions apply test and
make sure it won’t stain or discolor). Then seal all the soft
covered furniture (sofas), soft furnishings, beds and mattresses
and finally cover carpets with foundation plastic using duct tape
to seal the edges if you want to get it all done in one shot.
6) Buy or wash out a spray bottle and fill it with the borax
solution. If you are doing it outside or in the house after the
house is cleaned and ready for the pet to be reintroduced, spray
the underside of the dogs, and refill the bottle as often as
necessary to soak the animal and move to other parts of the
animal paying special attention to any hot spots or active
infestation areas. When the dog is completely soaked head to tail
move to the head and the sensitive area around the eyes. Some
people put a couple of drops of mineral oil in the eye to protect
the eyes before working on the head but I personally have never
used that method. I am just VERY careful around the head. I
recommend switching to a small cotton ball to sponge on the
solution. That gives you a lot more control in where the solution
goes and can ensure you cover all areas. Make sure the ears are
covered in particular since many mites love being deep inside
them.
7) Now that the house is clean and the dog or dogs are cleaned
(unless you have a cat or a pet rabbit they would need it too) the
humans are all that are left to treat to stop the chance of a re-
infestation. Even though dog mites cannot live long enough off
the dog more than a few days they can live long enough to re-
infest the dog if it comes in contact with you or your kids. For
this I recommend one simple product buy and ounce of Tea Tree
oil also known as Melaluca and have each person bathe in the
tub with 10 drops of Tea Tree oil in the tub. This will kill the
mites on you and also stop them from breeding if they survive
and somehow got back on the dog. That is also a natural
Scabies treatment for humans and will treat all the human
scabies mites as well. It is pleasant smelling oil and also kills
any bacteria on the skin. You must be submerged foot to chin
and stay in the warm to hot water at least 10 minutes longer is
better.
8) The borax treatment solution should be used on the animal
and should be applied every three to four days until the mites are
completely cleared and then ten days after the last signs are
gone.
9) OK now for the hard part contact with the animal should be at
a minimum during this period since any mites that were missed
on the first cleaning or two would be able to transfer back to you
and your children and then back to the dog after the cleaning and
solution treatments. I know it is difficult but it helps to keep
them off the furniture until after the plastic has been taken off.
You could use the rubber gloves or the plastic gloves to handle
the dog and wash them etc to help with that problem.
10) If after all of this you still find your animal is still showing
signs of infestation then you need to ask who is not following the
rules and explain that Fido is not going to get better unless they
do.
11) When your dogs have been clear for ten days you can take
the plastic off of your furniture and vacuum them and after
spraying out your vacuum with the solution one more time you
should be done.
12) Don’t let your dog play with the dog down the street again
that still has the mange. If your dog does come in contact with
mange again just give it a bath in the solution again before the
mites begin to multiply again.
16.0 The Neem oil cure
Neem Oil is an excellent remedy for demodectic and Sarcoptic
mange (scabies). It can also be used to treat also fungal skin
ailments, psoriasis, eczema, ringworm, warts, cold sores, head
lice, and skin ulcers. It truly is versatile oil. It comes from India
and is a major miracle in natural healing. It can be used for
killing Mange mites of the several different kinds and it can also
kill fleas and other parasites.
The formulas to use for a Neem oil cure
Mix a Shampoo for mange that will also kill fleas, or lice.
Just add ½ ounce Neem oil to 8 ounces of a mild chemical-free
shampoo and use it to shampoo your dog twice per week.
This is not a have to but you can use this rinse as well between
times and on hot spots (active infestations or places loosing hair
etc.) to treat for Mange and fleas, it will also kill some ticks.
Mix 1 ounce Neem oil with 1 gallon water and few drops of mild
soap or shampoo (to emulsify oil). Rinse animal twice per week.
Neem oil is a very thick and can become solid even at room
temperature. To make it a liquid and easy to pour and use place
the bottle in hot water for a few minutes.
Storing in a cool dark place will dramatically increase the shelf
life of the oil.
Caution it is wise to test Neem oil to make sure there is no
sensitivity to it either in pets or people.
Simply put some of either solution on a test spot on skin to test
for skin sensitivity. It is pretty rare but some people and some
pets are sensitive to Neem oil and it may require greater more
dilution. As with almost everything else avoid contact with the
eyes. The oil is for external use only the leaves of the Neem plant
can be made into a tea that can strengthen the dogs’ immune
system and that will help the mange to go away faster and keep
it away.
A few drops of lavender oil can be added to mixtures to mask the
smell of the Neem oil since some believe it has a smell that is
similar to french onion soup. If there are sores on the dog you
can put 5-10 drops of Tea Tree Oil which is also known as
Melaluca oil into the shampoo and in the rinse. That will speed
the healing of any open sores and kill any bacteria in the mites’
burrows.
17.0 Immune deficiencies and time to cure
With this remedy as with all the remedies it is a good idea to
remember that the mites grow quickly because there is an
immune deficiency and that needs to be looked into as well. A
change of diet should be seriously looked at and maybe some
doggie vitamins as well. Regular meat can be done for a while to
see if the immune system will improve.
We have had great reports back to us telling us that they begin to
see results in a week to 2 weeks, then gradual and steady
improvement thereafter. This is somewhat longer than the borax
treatment but still much shorter and much less toxic than the
veterinarian treatments. It is also better and the dog that has
been repeatedly dipped with toxic chemicals needs about a week
just to recover from that stress, so patience is important.
You can blend in the new food along with the old food for a while.
A sudden transition in food can add more stress to the dog and
not help at all. Take about 3-5 days to gradually change the diet
and seriously consider some supplements
Consider eliminating anything that can be causing stress or
issues to the dog like commercial food and vaccinations as well
as spot flea treatments, flea collars and anything else that could
be 'toxic' needs to be cut out and let the animal heal.
18.0 Neem oil Formula
It is a good idea to consider the addition of Neem oil for any dog
shampoo even if not for therapeutic reasons. The ratio for Neem
to shampoo is 1⁄2 to 1oz. of Neem oil to sixteen oz. of chemical
free shampoo. Neem oil can be mixed with a good hand lotion or
a base oil such as sweet almond or grape seed oil and can be
applied directly to the dogs skin and used to help break up the
thick, dark or scaly skin that may have developed during the
mange attack. It can also soften the skin and help with the
healing. A few drops of healing tea tree oil can be added as well.
With regard to ears, after cleaning the ears, a drop or two once a
day in each ear is very effective for killing bacteria or fungus and
can be used as needed. Use very carefully around the eyes due
to the alcohol.
Either Neem capsules or Neem tea can be added to the dogs’
diet. The Neem capsules consist of finely ground Neem leaf and
is great for internal use. Neem does come in a bulk powder with
exactly the same formula of the Neem caps. Dogs don’t seem to
have a problem eating it and it seems to be a very convenient
way of giving it to them. Neem caps are 500mg. A good rule is to
give one capsule or 500mg. for every 10 lbs. of body weight per
day. Up to eight (8) caps a day is sufficient for large breeds
weighing 80 to 100 lbs. using the loose powder in the food is a
cheaper way to go.
You can assume one level teaspoon is the same as 5 grams or
5000 milligrams or 10 capsules. It is next to impossible to over
dose on powdered Neem leaf so if you’re get even reasonably
close the dog will be just fine. Neem is a very safe product and
has a lot of uses other than mange and flea control so having it
around the house is a great idea anyway. If your dog is a difficult
or not a good eater use the capsules. The amount of capsules or
powder can be split for a twice a day regiment. If Neem powder
is difficult to find or you run out Neem extract can be substituted
and put in to the food or water. The extract is strong so only one
ml or one dropper full is equal to about 2500 mg. of powder or 5
capsules. For continued use, after the initial dosage the quantity
can be reduced by at least one third to one half.

Cat Mange treatment Using Neem oil
1 oz. apricot kernel oil
1/2 oz. castor oil
2 droppers full of Neem oil
2 droppers full of Oregano oil
Just apply it whenever the cat is scratching to the area being
scratched. Like Dogs it will likely take a week or two to see
significant results. Also remember with any treatment the least
you can do to prevent re-infestation is to vacuum or wash the
bedding and spray the area where the cat is with the dog rinse
formula above.

The Pine Sol® Mange Cure
Pine Sol® has the active ingredient of pine tar or pine oil in it has
been a natural insecticide for many years. In this treatment you
will simply wash the dog or dogs and does not require a prewash
with shampoo before the treatment like in other treatments we
have told you about so this is a one step process. It does not
have the benefit of the Borax remaining in and on the fur and the
particles being left as the dog goes from place to place and the
particles fall off and help to treat the area. This would be my
second or third choice as the best cure but it does work and may
be easier to find than the hydrogen peroxide and 20 mule team
Borax especially in places like Britain where borax has been
classified undesirable and removed from the shelves.
8 ounces of Pine Sol® (that is one cup) the ratio is one half of
whatever container you are going to put it in. Small dogs will not
need much if you have a large dog mix more.
21.0
8 ounces of shampoo (that is one cup). The shampoo works best
if it has a conditioner built in like some of the herbal shampoos.
Just keep the mixture at half of the Pine Sol®.
For older dogs that are in poor health and young puppies older
the formula can be changed to only 1/3 Pine Sol® and 2/3 of
shampoo. This weaker solution can be used on young dogs but
they should be at least 4 months old. If the dog is less than 4
months old there are two more cures later that will work for
them.
Both parts of the formula are mixed together using equal parts of
whatever shampoo you have selected (non-scented is best) and
the Pine Sol® and Conditioning Shampoo.
Simply shake the two components in an empty bottle until it is
mixed thoroughly. The dog or dogs will need a shampoo every
two days until the mange is gone. It should not require a lot
more than a normal shampoo so the 16 ounces will last a while
and just mix as needed.

Formula mixing instructions
1. In mixing the formula use the same precautions you would
use with any household cleaners. Protecting your hands with
rubber gloves is always a good idea.
2. The very best thing to do would be to clip the hair of the dog
short but if you do not want to spend the money to have it done it
will work fine without it, but you do HAVE to make sure not only
ALL the hair is coated but it penetrates to the skin and is allowed
to sit on the skin and penetrate into it and kill the mites and
eggs.
3. When shampooing the dog completely wet the dog and then
lather the formula over the dog completely. Everything from head
to tail needs to be covered but be careful on the dogs head and
ears. I would use a cotton ball to apply the formula making sure
not to get it into the animal’s eyes. Shampooing can be messy so
pick your spot.
4. Pet stores sell a wash mitt that can be used very well during
the shampoo process or a towel. Make sure you use the mitt or
towel to work all the lather into the hairs and on the skin.
5. The hot spots and active infestation areas must be worked
and the lather worked into the area which will be sensitive just
like any open wound on your skin the active ingredients in Pine
Sol® will kill off the bacteria in the burrows and open sores. The
skin may have turned black or crusty and massaging the skin
with the lather will help break up this crusty area and expose the
mites to the formula.
6. Make sure that the lather is worked into every area especially
between the toes of each paw where mites hide, around the face
and eyes and in the ears. It should not hurt the ears but you
should be careful not to flood them with the solution. Many of
the mites like to locate around the muzzle and ears so take
special care to get all the areas.
7. this is shampoo and Pine Sol® we are talking about here it
would be a GOOD idea to keep a clean dry towel handy when
working on the face and to have some fresh water handy to rinse
out the eyes. Some one handy to hold the dog while the eyes are
rinsed out would also be a good idea.
8. Your dog needs to let the solution remain on the skin and fur
for 15 to 30 minutes when you are done with the shampoo. It
needs to have time to penetrate the skin and into the burrows
killing the mites and eggs. Puppies and dogs with more severe
skin issues may need shorter times and with each shampoo the
mites will be fewer and start allowing the condition to heal itself.
9. The dog or dogs you are treating need to be rinsed off with
this treatment and then can be dried off. The dog should not be
allowed to lick off the formula since it could make the dog sick.
10. Make sure that ALL of the pets in the house are cleaned and
treated along with all the bedding and doggie toys are done.
How much cleaning and house prep you do is up to you but the
more you do the faster you are likely to get rid of the mange on
your dog and not have a re-infestation.
11. The pet will likely have some itching and scratching for a
few days. Partly from dying mites but mostly from the open sores
and burrows being flushed out and needing to heal.
12 Most of the scratching should subside in the first one or two
days as the healing begins.
13 The dog should be bathed in the solution 3 times for the first
week and two to three times the second week.
14 The formula should be continued to be used one or two times
a week until you are sure the mange is gone for good which is
usually less than 30 days (unless Fido hangs out with other dogs
with mange again).
15 The healing should be well underway by the end of the second
week but continue to bathe the dog twice a week into the third
week since any mites that survive can emerge every 4 days.
This catches them way before they are mature and able to breed
and dig more burrows. By this time all of the mites around the
house will be dead and the only mites living will be on the dog
and those only in areas that have not been treated possibly deep
inside the ears.
23.0
Now that the shampooing is done and the dog is dry you can
apply several oils to the pets’ skin that will stop the itching
faster and get the healing going at a much faster rate. The first
oil is Tea Tree oil also known as Melaluca. This oil has
tremendous healing properties to speed healing and it also kills
bacteria, fungus, lice, and scabies on its own. Tea Tree oil will
rapidly soothe the skin and make it feel better. There can be an
initial sting but it is not bad and the odor is not harsh or
unpleasant. Aloe Vera may be applied to the open sores and
damaged skin as well. It does not have the germicidal properties
and mange killing properties that the Tea Tree oil but Aloe
soothes the skin and speeds the healing.
17 During the treatment process the dogs bedding should have
been washed and ran through the dryer killing all the mites on it.
I is a good idea to either spray the areas the dog uses with a
commercial bug spray (insecticide) or you can sprinkle the borax
power (20 mule team borax from cure one) lightly around the
area and it will kill the mites on contact. Or the area can be
sprinkled with salt and vacuumed after a few hours. The dog
lying in the salt is not pet friendly if the dog has open sores.
18 You will notice both with this formula and the borax formula
that very quickly the funky odor the dog has had because of the
mites will go away and both formulas kill fleas as well. If you
periodically use either formula then your dog should be mange
and flee free for a long time to come.
19 Be sure and label the shampoo mixture as mange shampoo
and not what the bottle may say it is. If not junior may have a
pine smell one day after washing his hair. The good news is he
will be lice and flee free though.
Demodetic Mange can be a widespread disease on the dog.
When it has gone beyond a local outbreak and become a
generalized case of mange it may take a while for the dog to fully
recover and get the coat back all shiny and new. Remember that
all dogs may have mange mites on them. It only becomes a
problem when the dogs immune system is not working. There
can be several factors that can cause the immune system to be
bad thyroid or liver malfunctions are two that cause it and needs
a veterinarian to help you. Diet is certainly one of the important
factors in the immune system that you can control.
You might try feeding your dog more actual meat by adding it
into his diet and give him some oil. If the meat has fat on it great,
if not fish oil or even vegetable oil will help the healing and get
the coat back soft and aid the dog in overcoming its immune
deficiencies. Just because you can cure mange if that is what
the problem is does not rule out taking your dog to the vet and
giving it some vitamin supplements to take care of it. Remember
other diseases can look and act like Mange so if you try these
treatments and you do not see results it may be something else
or the clean up of the area may not have been that good and the
pet is being re-infested.

Mange cures for Puppies and Pregnant or Nursing dogs.
These treatments will work and are not toxic to small dogs and
do not have the problem of transferring to the puppies when
nursing if that is the case. Small puppies have immune systems
that have not fully developed and allow the Mange mites of the
various kinds to grow.
Puppy and Pregnant cures
Now these cures are messy but require no chemicals or things
can hurt the animal. They do not penetrate the skin and kill the
mite eggs laid in the burrows so they will need to be done at
least 3 times a week to keep up. I strongly recommend that you
put down some plastic before you begin coating you dog with
these.
In this cure clean the dog and simply get a bottle of mineral oil.
Shampoo the dog clean again in about 20 minutes that is about
all the time the little mites can hold their breath? If you want
extra help cleaning the dog and ensuring more of the mites are
dead you can use pine tar soap. It is a milder concentration than
in the pine formula and should be ok for the puppies. Pine soap
can be found at pet stores, some hardware stores, and online.
One brand name is Grandpa’s Pine Tar soap and it is sold on the
internet.

Cure 1 Mineral oil
Cover the dogs’ skin and fur with the mineral oil and simply rub it
into the fur. If there are crusty areas of infestation or thicker
black areas in whatever hot spots the dog may have rub the oil
into these places and see if you can massage the area enough to
begin breaking the crusty patches of skin down.
What you are doing here is lubricating the skin and softening it
and the oil is covering everything and shutting off the oxygen to
the mites. The little spider like mites are tiny and do not need
much air but they do have to breathe. The oil will cut off the air
to them.
26.0
Cure 2 Mayonnaise
Follow the same instructions above clean the dog and the get a
jar of mayonnaise and simply rub it in just like the mineral oil. I
prefer the mayonnaise myself it is thicker and stays where you
put it instead of dripping off of the dog.
27.0
Cure 3 Tea Tree Oil
Get a one ounce bottle of Tea Tree oil and put 5 drops per ounce
of tea tree oil into a bottle and mix one ounce of vegetable oil
with it. So if you had an 8 ounce bottle mix 40 drops of oil into
the bottle and shake it up well. Make sure you cover the puppy
all over with the oil and let it sit for 20-30 minutes before
washing oils off the puppy. Tea Tree oil does kill the mites on
contact and can penetrate the skin to kill the eggs. It also has
the quality of helping to heal wounds very rapidly and is
germicidal so will help to heal the dog.
28.0
Cure 4 Tea Tree oil and Water
If the puppy has open sores the vegetable oil may not be the best
way to go. It does help the coat and it does help to get rid of the
mites but if open sores are present.
Mix the 40 drops of Tea Tree oil in 16 ounces of water and
sponge it on the dog working it into the hair and skin.
With ALL the cures make sure you use a cotton ball or something
small to apply and spread it on the dogs head especially around
the eyes. We are trying to help our dog friend here not to cause
him pain by getting something in his eye.
29.0
Where cures one and two would work equally well with a dog or a
cat this one has some cat issues. I have not had a problem with
it but have found information that cats are sensitive to Tea Tree
oil and it may not be safe to use this one on CATS. Just including
the information in case your cat ever comes up with mange.
30.0 Flea treatment
All of the top three Mange treatments will kill the fleas as well.
To prevent fleas from taking over the dog again or mange from
getting started again after you have gone through the time and
trouble of getting rid of them I believe that giving the dog a good
wash with the mange remedies should keep that chance down
especially since by now I am sure you have looked into the dogs
life and changed it diet slowly, found ways to reduce its stress
(moving, family members going off to college the same sorts of
things that cause stress in humans). If Fido has been for a romp
in the woods and likely to have picked up pests or been with
dogs that might have been infected then you might want to add
another wash to the plan.
31.0 Ear mites
You will notice that as your dog gets rid of the Mange, fleas, and
Ear mites and so on that the smell of the dog will change and it is
not all because Fido has been washed probably more than at
anytime in his life. The dog has been fighting what is basically
and infection and when the cause is removed the smell should go
away and stay away. I would watch for the dog to scratch and
monitor him occasionally. I would do the scratch behind the ear
test and see if one of the legs tries to scratch in time with your
scratching. If so then mites may be hiding and breeding in the
ear. If that smell comes back you may want to look closer as
well and give the treatment another shot before the bugs get a
big foothold and hair starts falling out.
Depending on how long your dog has had the mange and how
much fur was lost and damage to the skin it could be 6 to 8
weeks before the damage has been reversed and hair is growing
back in all the bare spot and Fido starts looking like a dog again
instead of a dog disaster. He will appreciate the time you have
spent with him and the lack of the constant itching will certainly
take a lot of the stress out of his life and let him sleep better.
I am pleased that we have been able to help and that we were
able to treat your dog without repeated trips to the Vet and
having to put the poisons and pesticides on your dog friend that
is the normal cure for Mange and ear mites.
We really are here to help we are interested in your feedback and
learning which of the cures you used and worked the best for
you. We have listed them in the order we have found to work
best but every thing may not work for every dog. We would
appreciate it if you would send us an email telling us which cures
you tried, how long it took for your breed of dog and if possible
before and after pictures. The clearer the picture the better and
permission to use them in the future. If you do not want a
picture of your dog up or your testimonial I would still love to
hear from you. Even if you had a situation that one or more of
the cures did not work for you I would like to hear about it.
http://www.mangedogsdemodex.com/ is the web site and please
use the contact page email and that will reach us. We do go to
some dog events hope to see you there some day and your dog.

32.0 Now the legal fine print
First and foremost we are not doctors or Vets. If we were then
we would burn the report and charge you the $60 per dip times
10 visits or so and let you help us make our car payment. The
recipes do not constitute medical advice or guarantee a cure in
anyway. These are simply formulas that we have acquired that
seem to help an awful lot of dogs in distress. All formulas are
use at your own risk. If we knew of any contraindication we
certainly would tell you of it. This is one of the reasons we like
to get feedback. Either positive or negative so we can give you
the very best results we can find.
Even after there the dog has been treated it the dog could have a
case of mange again. The dog may test positive some time in
the future for mange mites but unless the immune system is
having a problem that has not been addressed then it should be
short lived. You know how to treat it.
Seriously we want the very best for your dog. If you use one or
more treatments you should see a marked improvement in days.
If your dog is not well underway to being healed in a couple of
weeks then there is an issue that is not being addressed and you
are going to need professional help. There are other things that
do look like Mange that are not. The dog could have internal
parasites. The Neem cure should help with that if you use the
powder or make a Neem tea to pour over the dogs’ food.
This report took a lot of time effort to compile for your benefit
and it is therefore a copywrited work.
Good luck to you and thank you for caring enough about your dog
to take action and get something done for your pet.
