Directions:

•Install, train and go!

Back in the day PSR – Pre speech recognition

Culture of the firm – lots of

lateral partners, more

independent style

Partner-heavy: accustomed

to doing own work

Not a lot of dictation usage

– mostly older partners

They will flock Once they see someone else

IT was NOT the driver

First wave – physical

limitations

Second wave – attorneys

who hunt-and-peck

Third wave – fast typists

who saw that it made them

faster

Breaking Barriers Work still to be done!

How To Train Your Dragon –

like the movie, not that

hard

The FUD factor

Teaching attorneys to talk

instead of type

Crystal ball Let’s look into the future

Perhaps moving to a server

model

Greater adoption as the

technology matures

Arguments for Change

Those attorneys who

dictate and the assistants

who support them are

using old and unsupported

equipment.

Arguments for Change

Word Processing often

receives voice mail messages

in .wav format as well as

other miscellaneous audio

files for transcription.

Arguments for Change

IT received inquiries from

attorneys regarding speech

recognition products.

Reason #1 for Choosing BigHand: Security

Microcassette recorders

were replaced with more

secure digital devices.

BigHand has a client for

Blackberry and is working

on a client that works with

Good for Enterprise on iOS

and Android devices.

Reason #2 for Choosing BigHand: Ease of Use

Some attorneys learn only the

device and have their

assistants import the data.

Some learn how to upload it

themselves in just a few

steps.

Workflows ensure that work

is done in a timely manner

even if a secretary is out.

Reason #3 for Choosing BigHand: Convenience

Support for smart phone

submissions. Attorneys submit

work while away and it is finished

before they arrive.

Microsoft Word integration

allows secretaries to use

“karaoke mode” to hear the

dictation as the cursor moves

through the text.

Reason #4 for Choosing BigHand: Productivity and Efficiency

Documents turned around at

a faster rate.

Work can be distributed more

evenly.

Why are we all still typing?

We learned to dictate a long time ago…

But we have evolved…

But is this really the best use of your attorneys’ time?

• “I type really fast”

• “I think through my fingers”

• “I never learned to dictate”

• “I use document templates”

• “I sit out in the open”

• etc.

Why?

Why are lawyers typing their documents?

It’s my fault…

Sorry.

Alternatives to self-typing

• Front-end speech recognition

• Easy to deploy and proven

• Often an individual choice

• Digital dictation

• Standardizes process

• Efficient use of administrative staff

• Can leverage mobile devices for on-the-go efficiency

• Digital dictation + speech recognition

• Faster turnaround times for critical items

• Takes rote work out of the hands of administrative staff

• Tapes, transcription services, horses and buggies

Where is this going?

Healthcare: an interesting analog

• Started with efficient document creation via human labor

• Transcription services driven by technology to improve efficiency

• Moved to back-end voice recognition

• Started with automatic drafts, moved to full voice automation

• Built sophisticated models for target domains

• Built deep knowledge of specific medical specialties to further improve accuracy

• Integrated with EMR systems

• Captured information at the point of care

• Applied natural language processing to extract clinical information

• Automatic coding of information for billing and reporting

• Integrated system drives takes unstructured reports and turns them into actionable data sets – while improving quality

How does this look in legal?

• Started with efficient document creation via human labor

• Yes – pretty much the same

• Moved to back-end voice recognition

• Same here – with digital dictation

• Built sophisticated models for target domains

• Legal is at the beginning here – deep integration with legal specialties and client info will improve quality

• Integrated with EMR [practice management and document management] systems

• We need to do more here – latest Dragon release makes it easier to integrate with some of these systems

• Applied natural language processing to extract clinical [client] information

• Wouldn’t it be amazing if billing and timesheets were automatic?

• Integrated system drives takes unstructured reports and turns them into actionable data sets – while improving quality

• Also reduces turnaround time, increases client satisfaction and profitability
