UMTS: the challenge
Over the past half-decade, the rapid ex-
pansion of broadband services based on
3G architectures has caused an incred-
ible surge in the complexity of wireless
networks. A key part of this complexity
lies in the fact that operators must sup-
port legacy voice services while at the
same time provide bandwidth-intensive
data services in a mixed 2G/3G environ-
ment.
This new breed of data service requires
a far more robust and flexible network
than simple circuit switching technology
permits. For example, content provided
by these services needs to be timely,
topical and customized to the needs
of the user. Customers also demand
always-on data connections no mat-
ter where they are located. To provide
these services, carrier networks must
migrate from voice-optimized archi-
tectures to data-optimized, packet-
switched architectures while maintain-

ing a high quality of experience.
These services also require deployment
of modern Network Elements (such as
RNCs, Node-Bs)… each of them po-
tential sources of problems due to the
implementation of new protocols and
procedures.
In such a migration, deployment of a
Network Monitoring System (NMS) is a
must. The NMS maximizes the ROI on
3G networks by ensuring more cost-ef-
fective and efficient test access and
service, and at the same time reduces
operational costs through sharing of the
analysis among multiple users. Further,
as interworking issues between the new
Network Elements and the legacy equip-
ment are very difficult to troubleshoot,
the NMS is a mandatory tool to test the
network during the trial and production
stages.Powerful, customized traf-

TAMS Architecture
2 Traff ic analys is and monitor ing system for UMTS
The Sunrise Telecom Solution
TAMS UMTS (Traffic Analysis and Monitoring System for
UMTS) is a scalable troubleshooting and service assurance
tool that consists of one or more Data Collector Servers
(DCS), coupled with a set of Probes that provide local in-
terfaces to the links carrying signaling at various interfaces
throughout the network. TAMS integrates all capabilities
for network troubleshooting and service monitoring in a
single platform that shows network faults, traffic statis-
tics, and provides tools for problem isolation, analysis and
resolution.
TAMS was designed to:
• Continuously monitor the state of the signaling network
• Locate the causes of the abnormal conditions through
troubleshooting operations
• Evaluate the quality of the network and its proper con-
figuration
• Generate detailed reports about network usage and
quality of the provisioned services
TAMS UMTS: concepts and results
TAMS continuously collects two kinds of detailed informa-
tion from the Probes: Call Detail Records (CDRs) and Protocol
Messages.
• CDRs are generated by the probes for all monitored trans-
actions (including unsuccessful ones) and are stored in a
powerful Oracle® database.
• Protocol Messages are stored in a high performance file
system for off-line troubleshooting and CDR drill down
analysis.
Call Details Records Searching & Analysis
The database can be queried to show how the CDRs relate
to all calls matching specific criteria such as:
• Call date and time
• Called/Calling numbers
• IMEI
• IMSI
• RNC ID
• PDP Address
• APN
• Local Area Identifier
• Routing Area Identifier
• Disconnection Cause
Call Details Records Drill-down
All protocol messages related to a specific call can be
displayed easily and the user can view the diagram showing
the calls progress through the network being monitored. Multi Protocol Correlated Trace
TAMS can correlate different protocols (i.e.: Iub and Iu CS/
PS) to provide a unified view of the entire call using ladder
diagrams, regardless of the different technologies involved.
Traffic Analysis
The storage of the CDRs onto the local database is a valu-
able source of information. Depending on the customer’s
requirement, the system provides reports and statistics
about traffic behavior such as Call Completion and Discon-
nection Cause analysis. The system can be easily customized
to meet specific network requirements.
Trends Analysis
TAMS shows the behavior of specific measurements over time.
Key measurements are available in a standard report, while a
flexible statistical engine (based on SQL) allows customization
for other types of analysis.

Reports Scheduler
All the reports can be automatically programmed to be
generated daily, weekly or monthly.
Off-line Analysis over Recorded Data
TAMS allows off-line protocol analysis, including searching
and filtering over months of data to perform troubleshoot-
ing for problems that occurred in the past.
TAMS UMTS: Applications
Here are some examples of traditional TAMS applications:
• End-to-end call trace
• Statistical reports about disconnection causes and their
locations
• Statistical reports about the number of calls, by type (PS
calls and CS)
• Statistical reports about the services being used
• ACD (Average Call Duration) analysis
• Researches on customer and traffic behavior
• Detection of the problems on the specific RNCs
• Throughput rates on PS
• LAC update detect
• Testing of handoff procedures
TAMS for System Integrators
TAMS is the ideal platform for System Integrators that
must gather data from the signaling network and integrate
Protocol Analysis functions into their applications.
Besides the CDRs that are stored on the Oracle® database
(which are accessible through standard methods like ODBC),
it is possible to access raw protocol messages by means of
documented APIs based on CORBA standard. For example,
the API allows the following operations:
• Login/logoff a user to the Server
• Activate/deactivate a protocol analysis session
• Browse captured data to obtain raw messages
• Activate/deactivate a call trace session
• Browse frames belonging to a specific CDR stored into
the database
