Discussion Question!

How does the Common Core call for technology integration? !What do you already know about Technology integration and the CCSS?!

What do the CCSS documents say?!“To be ready for college, workforce training, and life in a technological society, students need the ability to gather, comprehend, evaluate, synthesize, and report on information and ideas, to conduct original research in order to answer questions or solve problems, and to analyze and create a high volume and extensive range of print and nonprint texts in media forms old and new.”!

!

"New technologies have broadened and expanded the role that speaking and listening play in acquiring and sharing knowledge and have tightened their link to other forms of communication. The Internet has accelerated the speed at which connections between speaking, listening, reading, and writing can be made, requiring that students be ready to use these modalities nearly simultaneously.”!

What do the CCSS documents say?!

"Students who are college and career ready employ technology thoughtfully to enhance their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language use. They tailor their searches online to acquire useful information efficiently, and they integrate what they learn using technology with what they learn offline. They are familiar with the strengths and limitations of various technological tools and mediums and can select and use those best suited to their communication goals.”!

!

What do the CCSS documents say?!

From Educational Leadership!“A whole host of fundamental literacy implications, as well as global implications, come naturally from a simple yet profound focus on reading texts deeply, writing for digital environments collaboratively, and reading and writing nonfiction texts. It's a hopeful sign that our first widely adopted national standards, the Common Core State Standards, support and even encourage the teaching of these important tasks.”!- William Kist, New Literacies and the Common Core!

Sample Tech Common Core Standards!RI.8.7. Grade 8 students: !Evaluate the advantages of using different mediums (e.g., print or digital text, video, multimedia) to present a particular topic or idea. !!

Sample Tech Common Core Standards!RST.8.9. Grade 8 students: !Compare and contrast the information gained from experiments, simulations, video, or multimedia sources with that gained from reading a text on the same topic. !!

Sample Tech Common Core Standards!W.9-10.6. Grade 9-10 students: !Use technology, including the Internet, to produce, publish, and update individual or shared writing products, taking advantage of technology's capacity to link to other information and to display information flexibly and dynamically. !!

Sample Tech Common Core Standards!W.3.8. Grade 3 students: !Recall information from experiences or gather information from print and digital sources; take brief notes on sources and sort evidence into provided categories. !!

Sample Tech Common Core Standards!WHST.7.6. Grade 7 students: !Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and present the relationships between information and ideas clearly and efficiently. !!

Sample Tech Common Core Standards!SL.9-10.5. Grade 9-10 students: !Make strategic use of digital media (e.g., textual, graphic, audio, visual, and interactive elements) in presentations to enhance unstinting of findings, reasoning, and evidence and to add interest. !!

When making mathematical models, they know that technology can enable them to visualize the results of varying assumptions, explore consequences, and compare predictions with data. !

What do the CCSS documents say?!

Mathematically proficient students at various grade levels are able to identify relevant external mathematical resources, such as digital content located on a website, and use them to pose or solve problems. They are able to use technological tools to explore and deepen their understanding of concepts. !

!

What do the CCSS documents say?!

Sample Tech Common Core Standards!M 5.G.2 Represent real world and

mathematical problems by graphing points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane, and interpret coordinate values of points in the context of the situation. !

!

Sample Tech Common Core Standards!7.G.2 Draw (freehand, with ruler and

protractor, and with technology) geometric shapes with given conditions. Focus on constructing triangles from three measures of angles or sides…!

!

Sample Tech Common Core Standards!M A-CED. 3 Represent constraints by

equations or inequalities, and by systems of equations and/or inequalities, and interpret solutions as viable or non- viable options in a modeling context. !

!!

Sample Tech Common Core Standards!M F-IF.7 Graph functions expressed

symbolically and show key features of the graph, by hand in simple cases and using technology for more complicated cases. !

!!!

Sample Tech Common Core Standards!S-ID.8 Compute (using technology)

and interpret the correlation coefficient of a linear fit. !

What examples have you seen of great technology integration?!What non examples have you seen?!

Begin with the End In Mind!

What technology-based skills do you want students to have when they graduate?!

Teacher Scenario!

Ms. Norfar wants to use technology to assess student learning in a project. Students analyzed what cell phone plans were best as they learned linear equations. She only has 3 desktop computers in her room!

Teacher Scenario!

Mr. Schneider is doing intentional reading instruction on informational text, and wants to integrate technology. Although he does not have computers in his classroom, a computer lab is available in the library for specific, limited days. !

Teacher Scenario!

Mr. Miller has a laptop cart available for one week that he can check out. He is working a persuasive writing project where students are convincing the school board to ban or allow certain texts in the school. !

Teacher Scenario!

Mrs. Horras wants to vary the types of text she has students read. She has a policy where students are allowed to use their own devices for instructional purpose, and also has five computers in her classroom for students to use. !
