WORLD SCENARIO• 1 in every 5 is an adolescent• About 1.2 billion adolescents 85%

live in developing countries• 1.7 million of them loose their lives

mostly due to accidents, suicide, violence, pregnancy related complications & other illnesses that are preventable or treatable

• India has largest population of teenagers

• over 190 million representing over 20% of total population.

• According to National Family Health Survey 1998-99 16.4% of all women in age group 15-19 years have at least one child ever born.

Among Adolescent Females

• Early marriage, Pregnancies, & Motherhood

• Census boys girls• 1991 1000 1150

• In 1996, 36% of Girls aged 15-19 years were married

• In rural area percentage was even higher up to 45%

LITRACY GAP

• 46% at primary• 38% at upper Primary• 34% at Secondary• 32% at higher Secondary• In rural settings gap is still higher

• FEMALE

• About 1/3 of the adolescent aged 15-19 years were reported to be working.

• Most such jobs are labor intensive low income jobs in unorganized sector

• They are exposed to unsafe & un healthy7 working conditions

• 6.6% adolescents in India suffer from Psychiatric problems.

Meternal Mortality In India

• 15 - 19 years die twice as much as in 20 – 24; in pregnancy or child birth.

• Chances of deaths in 10-14 is still more.

India• Has the highest level of violence

in the home against women married at age of ≤18

• 70% of those surveyed had experienced beating.

• Such women are more likely to believe that husband might be justified in beating the wife.

High Risk Behaviour

• Sand is slipping from hands & we are fool to believe that everything is alright.

• Approximately ½ of all HIV Infected have occurred in <25 Years of age & it is spreading like wild fire.

Rebellious behaviour

• Substance abuse• Gang Membership• Carrying a weapon• Self harm & Self mutilation• Suicide
