DENTO KOSHO – Tradition/Personal Interpretation
Congratulations to Brian Tamura for receiving the Eagle Scout Award on April12, 2010. I was able to attend the Eagle Award Ceremony as did many DBTmembers.
I was a Boy Scout at the Senshin Buddhist Temple Troop #636. One of myscout leaders was Mr. Roy Nishizaka. I remember him because he was recentlydischarged from the army and taught us about marching. He was the drillsergeant and we did a lot of marching. Mr. Roy Nishizaka was originally fromFort Lupton, CO. Small world. My Nisan (older brother), Kyoichi, was an EagleScout. I did not receive the Eagle Award, but I remember the many hoursKyoichi worked on merit badges and helping at the Temple. Many of the UnitedStates of America Presidents were Eagle Scouts.
It is amazing the things I remember. I am sure you feel the same. I stillremember the Boy Scout Oath. I remember the many ways we would tie knotson a rope. At one time, I had memorized the Morse Code. I have forgotten mostof it, but I remember the code for “V”, dit dit dit da.
Brian Tamura and his sister Kellie studied with me for 6 months and theyreceived the Sangha Award. The Sangha Award is given to scouts for their studyof the Buddha/Dharma. Brian Tamura’s Eagle Project was to paint the DBTGym. The gym looks good thanks to Brian and his Eagle Project. Again, congratulations to Brian Tamura on receiving the Eagle Scout Award.Namandabu, kanya

We have a new floor in the Auditorium!
Saturday and Sunday, May 1st & 2nd a crew ofvolunteers met at the Temple and ripped up the oldtile in the auditorium. Many blisters and stiff/sorejoints were experienced. Several groups wererepresented: YBA: Zak & Shannon Umetani, Brian Tamura, IanBerve, Scott Kaniyama, Eric Berve Judo: Brian Levitt, Tom Tabuchi, Fred Smith,Joseph Wagner, Shayan Akbari Volleyball: Lorraine Hisamoto Bonsai: Gary Matsuda Temple Board of Directors: Gene Watada,Charles Ozaki, Frank Miyazawa, Randy Sasaki,Dennis Hardman, Wayne Berve
This project has been in the planning stages forseveral years. It was funded entirely with proceedsfrom the sale of pop, water, gatorade, etc... Severalyears ago Lorraine Hisamoto came up this the idea tosell the beverages bake sales and special events anduse the proceeds to buy needed tools for the Temple. The program was initially know as the “Tools for theTemple fund”. After the purchases of many tools, the fund then bought a refridgerator and lent moneyto the Cherry Blossom committee to purchase thelarge silver freezer now located in the auditorium. The fund then morphed into “Tiles for the Temple”.Once the needed amount was raised, we solicitedbids and scheduled this much needed upgrade to ourTemple. Quite an accomplishment at $.50 & $1 at atime!
Thanks to everyone who helped to make this happen.A special thanks to Lorraine for identifying a smallsolution that has satisfied many large temple needs!
Thank you to the newsletter folding, stuffing andsealing team of Ed Nakagawa, Grace Kiyotake, Herb & DotInouye and Alley & Yoshimi Watada for getting lastmonth’s newsletter out in the mail.
Thank you to Rebecca Steinebrey for negotiating a newphone contract and following up with creating new voicemessage greetings (e.g. have you checked out this year’sCherry Blossom hotline?)
Thank you to Stacey Umemoto Ospina for donating twobrand new saddle back staplers. She even threw in boxesof extra staples!
Thank you to Troy Kilen and Cynthia Kiyotake forcreating a new temple website. Launch date for the newwebsite is June 1, 2010 - check it out at www.tsdbt.orgAlso, please provide any feedback or comments.
Thank you to Steve Koga, Merrily Stewart and AprilOkubo for applying five layers of wax to the new tile floorin the auditorium .
I can’t believe it’s the end of the school year!Thank you to all of you that made this year fun!All of you made Stacey’s and I transition back intothe position of co-superintendents fairly smooth(What were we thinking of? Oh, yeah, thanksDennis!)
So, if this is the end of one year, which meansanother year will be starting up soon. By the way, that will be September 12th. If you are interestedin teaching our little ones the teachings of theDharma and Buddha, please contact Stacey or me.We do have a couple of positions available!

Water becomes round when it is poured into a round vessel; water becomes squarewhen it is poured into square vessel. But water does not originally have a round orsquare shape. However, all human beings forget this and become attached to theshape of water.Human beings see things as good or bad, favorable or unfavorable, and think interms of being and non-being. But they are used and trapped by such thoughts, andthey suffer because they chase after external objects. If people instead understand that their constricted thoughts are caused by externalconditions and return to their unbound original nature, they can attain the state offreedom in which nothing can obstruct their body and mind.

A Word From the Temple OfficeA Word From the Temple OfficeA Word From the Temple OfficeA Word From the Temple OfficeA Word From the Temple Officeby Donna Inouye
On more than one occasion, my daughter has proclaimedme to be the “luckiest person I know.” I know she doesn’tgrant me this title based upon my claim to fame or fortune(which happens to be none), and there are times when shehas even declared me to be a bad luck magnet (obviously, being “lucky” means taking the good with the bad).
In attempting to explain my luck as actually being well-timed opportunities which are presented to me insynchronicity with my willingness or readiness to acceptthem, our conversation often segues into a Sesame Street-esque lesson on the letter “P”. For most of her years, mydaughter has had to listen about Practice, Persistence andPatience (I didn’t plan around the letter ‘p’ – these threewords just happened to PoP up in enough impromptuparent-child talks that I can now just say, “P word” to mydaughter with a knowing look and she [regretfully][on herpart] knows what I mean.)
Anyway, on the last occasion of declaring me to be theluckiest person she knows (I had just won concert ticketsthrough a newspaper contest), my daughter side-steppedthe entire discussion by declaring her presence in my lifeas the lucky element. Then she laughed and hung up thephone.
We may share a familial joke and she most likely will haveto endure my verbal lessons many more times, but mydaughter has added another dimension to the “P word”lesson for, not only is she absolutely correct about beingthe lucky element in my life but, she has also reminded methat the People I have in my life (and each of us has thesepeople) make me the luckiest person I know.
