Testing: Now what

A basic introduction to testing

Today’s events

1. Basic tips and tricks (Getting the data ready)2. Hands-on: Reliability 13. Hands-on: Looking at test item performance4. Hands-on: Reliability and more5. Alternatives to classical test theory (IRT)

We won’t cover

• Research functions (t-tests, ANOVA)• Validity designs (much)• Mastery or achievement tests (specifically)

Some big words

• Discrete point• Polytomous• Norm/Criterion-referenced tests• Unidimensional• Reliability • Validity

Other words we (might) use . . .

• mean• variance• standard deviation

Today’s tests focus on

• Reliability• Norm-referenced• Discrete point• Unidimensionality

Getting data

Alternatives?

These change quickly!

Caution

• Use as many items as you NEED• Don’t be constrained by the size of your

answer sheet

Cleaning test data

• Remove R1C1 formatting• Show hidden columns/rows• Remove empty or unnecessary row/columns• Decide what to do with empty cells

Go to “Cleaning Test Data” file on Excel!

To share data, you can make . . .

• a frequency table for scores• a histogram• a scalogram (you’ll see!)

Go to “Frequency and Histogram practice” file on Excel!

Now you can . . .

• Clean your data for analysis• Manipulate your data• Make simple charts for sharing
