1951–1960(9years) MBA’s first music department formed in
1951 with the arrival of Moses and Carleen Chalmers . The couple
were recent music major graduates of La Sierra College, newly
married, and embarking on their first teaching assignment .
Upon arrival to the campus in the autumn of 1951, the two fledg-
ing teachers discovered that their new music building, padded
with bed mattresses, had previously housed incarcerated AWOL
and/or criminal military personnel . Undaunted by these humble beginnings, Moses initiated
an outstanding choral, band, and voice program . He also formed the special choral ensem-
ble-- Oceanaires . Talented Carleen provided full-time professional piano and organ instruc-
tion, rounding out the music teacher duo of Moses and Carleen Chalmers . Today those high
standards are still evident at Monterey Bay Academy .
vErLE bETTs
1960–1968(8years) The life of Verle Betts was full of rich musical
traditions from Plainview Adventist Academy, Union College,
and the Trojans of USC Thornton School of Music . Just before
coming to MBA, Verle had taken Armona Adventist Acad-
emy (CA) to the 1959 Atlantic City Youth Congress, where he
presented the first marching band in the Seventh-day Adventist
denomination . But his first love was for chorale singing and the
ministry of music he built upon at Monterey Bay Academy . Verle’s chorale philosophy was
simply “sing from the heart with one voice in perfectly blended harmony .” He strongly be-
lieved that “music could only be performed from the heart after it was thoroughly embedded
in the mind .” In addition to the strong personal work ethic required to become an excellent
musician, students under Verle’s tutelage learned the values of service, commitment, and
camaraderie . He was a man who had made it his mission to lead youth in inspirational song
and performance, to offer an exceptional music program at Monterey Bay Academy that all
students would aspire to be in .
ArLAdELL NELsON-sPEyEr
1968–1998(30years) Upon graduating from La Sierra College,
Arladell Bond taught choir, voice, piano, and organ at Walla
Walla College and Lodi Academy (CA) . She then married Lowell
Nelson, moved to Montana, taught at Mt . Ellis Academy for
eight years and had three sons . When Arladell arrived at MBA in
the summer of 1968, she planned to just teach piano and voice
lessons half-time . However, Verle Betts decided to retire . Teach-
ing choir and the Oceanaires became such a joy, Arladell knew she wanted to do this the rest
of her life . She recalls, “Elder Voth use to remind us each day to remember why we were there,
to reach each student, to help them find Jesus, and to remind them that they were loved .” She
retired after 30 years to Cool, California and has remained active in music the last 12 years .
Arladell and Fred Speyer, widow and widower, and long-time friends and co-workers at MBA,
were married December 27, 2009 .

ANGELICA ECLAr
1998–2003(5years) Angelica was the third Oceanaires direc-
tor to graduate from La Sierra University . As a college student,
she conducted children’s choirs at area churches, was voted
Outstanding Senior, and was the Senior Class Secretary . It’s in-
teresting to note, that Angelica and current Oceanaires director,
Joshua Rivera, sang together during college in La Sierra’s elite
singing choir, Octet . Upon receiving her degree in music educa-
tion, Angelica taught at Orangewood (CA) and La Sierra Academies (CA) prior to arriving at
MBA . She’s been at Escondido Academy (CA) since the fall of 2003 .
TIM HANsEN ’83
2003–2005(2years) Twenty years following his graduation, Tim
Hansen returned to his alma mater in the fall of 2003 to serve
as MBA’s choir and Oceanaires director . Previous to MBA, Tim
taught music at Miramonte (CA), Sierra View Jr . Academy (CA),
and Mountain View Academy (CA) . He received his master’s
degree in music education from Indiana University in 2009 . He
and his wife, Sheri (Ballard) Hansen (former instrumental teacher
at MBA), teach music at Paradise Adventist Academy (CA) and are actively involved in music at
the Paradise Adventist Church . In addition, they teach music at Chico Oaks Adventist School .
The Hansen’s 16-month-old son, Caleb, also keeps them quite busy .
jOsHUA rIvErA ’92
2005–Present(5years) Josh Rivera, a graduate of MBA, sung
under the direction of Arladell Nelson-Speyer as a tenor in
Oceanaires and choir . He went on to study Music Education
at La Sierra University . After spending a year in Spain studying
Castillian (Spanish), he accepted the call to teach at Sierra View
Junior Academy in Visalia, CA . Josh taught there for six years
before returning to his alma mater in 2005 . He has never forgot-
ten the moment when he decided he wanted to teach music . That moment took place his
senior year in the upstairs Oceanaires rehearsal room . Josh loves traveling, art history, early
music ie . Medieval and Renaissance, and most of all, his wife, Heidi, and their two daughters,
Analisa and Alexia .

University and Loma Linda University Medical
Center . He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree
at Loma Linda University in 1970, followed by a

Dr . Hart’s vision extends beyond the walls of Loma Linda University not only to the local

reaches of our globe . He has served as Chief of Party for a USAID project in Tanzania where he
developed a national maternal and child health program that is still a model for Africa today .
His passion for humanitarian service has led to the development of a variety of programs at
Loma Linda University including, Students for International Mission Service (SIMS) and Social
Action Community Health System (SACHS)—a local low-cost clinic for the medically under-
served . Dr . Hart also serves as president of Adventist Health International (AHI), a manage-
ment corporation established to restore Adventist mission hospitals worldwide .
MBA gave each of our three girls a time for learning, maturing, and establishing their trajectory for life.
Thank you. We are eternally grateful. DICK AND JUDY HART

ALUMNUS OF THE YE AR
Alumnus of the Year
SCOTT NELSON ’88
Scott Nelson, MBA Class of 1988, has led a life
that clearly demonstrates God’s hand and guid-
ance since he left this campus nearly twenty-two
years ago .
Scott went on to graduate from Pacific Union Col-
lege in 1992 and Loma Linda University School of
Medicine in 1996 . He specialized in orthopaedic
surgery . He and his wife, Marni, settled down with
their two sons, Chad and Alex .
But it didn’t take long before Scott was answer-
ing the call to join CURE International, a Christian
non-profit organization, whose mission is to
transform the lives of disabled children through
medical and spiritual healing . This organization
is present in 16 developing countries and has
performed more than 70,000 operations and cared for more than 1 million patients since 1998 .
According to Scott, “Our goal is to give even the most economically challenged patients the
opportunity to have a surgery that is equivalent to what is performed in the best medical
centers in the United States .”
In 2004, Scott and Marni packed up an ocean container and mobilized themselves for a new
life in the Dominican Republic . They live in the inner city of Santo Domingo while Scott serves
as the CURE International medical director for that area and Haiti .
Following the January 12 earthquake in Haiti, Scott arrived less than 48 hours later, prepared
to do all he could . He had operated in Haiti more than 20 times over the past five years and
few people were better suited to the task that was waiting for him . Because he was one of the
first physicians to arrive, he became the lead medical director throughout the intensive first
weeks of this disaster .
Scott Nelson has made a mark on this world . It is now our privilege today to recognize Scott,
on behalf of Monterey Bay Academy and the Seventh-day Adventist Church, for his humani-
tarian contributions, for his faith and service to God, and his loyalty to Adventist Christian
education . For these reasons, we are proud to recognize Dr . Scott Nelson as the Monterey
Bay Academy Alumnus of the Year 2010 .
Visit our website for the full story about Dr. Scott Nelson ’88.
