The American Civil War and Reconstruction: A Bibliography of Resources in the Erwin Library, Wayne Community College
Scope of the Bibliography: The years between 1860 and 1877 were full of upheaval, war, reconstruction and a time of healing for the United States. The American Civil War caused a major rift in the history of our country but many things, good and bad, came out of the war and this time period. Internet Resources lists websites with general information about the Civil War and Reconstruction as well as specialized websites about topics like Abraham Lincoln or Civil War trails. A separate group of websites have been added for the 2011‐2015 Sesquicentennial observances, many specific to either a state or a campaign or battle. The Books section is divided into topical sections generally based on the following “Top 200 Civil War Books & Articles” list compiled by the Civil War Era Studies Department of Gettysburg College:
http://www.gettysburg.edu/academics/cwes/resources/literature/top200.dot
These topical sections for Books include: Battles Emancipation and the Black Experience The Experience of War General Histories of the Civil War The Home Front Prominent Civil War Figures (primarily biographies) The War in North Carolina Reconstruction and the End of the War
The Erwin Library call number is listed for each item. If a book Call Number begins with Reference, the book is located in the Reference section of the Erwin Library and may be used and photocopied only within the Library. A few historical Fiction Collection titles are also listed in Books, including titles from the Easy (Children’s literature), Juvenile, and Young Adult Collections and reading levels. If available, Permalink URLs are included for electronic book versions.
Audiovisual items owned by the Erwin Library may be viewed in the Erwin Library, or checked out for a week by WCC faculty. WCC faculty may request an educational copy of a videorecording be made in the WCC Educational Support Technology Department (Media) for use in classrooms. Video Permalinks or Bookmarks are included for those titles also accessible in our library’s video streaming resources.

Many more videos are available in our video databases, available from the Erwin Library homepage through a WCC Single Search (check the Videos category), or, for databases which are not yet included in the integrated search, from the Other Databases link (click Videos). All will require a simple Erwin Library barcode number for authentication, should you be on a computer outside the library lab.
The Journals section lists titles of significant periodical publications in the field with Permalink URLs given for entire ranges of issues, which can then be browsed or searched. Journal Articles gives a sample of the thousands of articles available in the many research databases from the Erwin Library’s webpage using the WCC Single Search (by subject, article title, keyword, or author to locate a list of related articles), or Journals A‐Z (by journal title to browse all issues) search boxes. Permalinks or Article Stable URLs are also included in entries for these listed articles.
Please note that a library user at a computer outside of the Erwin Library computer lab will be prompted to enter his or her Erwin Library barcode number for authentication.
The Library of Congress Subject Headings may be used to search various databases including other libraries’ online catalogs, to find more materials in various formats to aid you in either searching for or applying for a job. To search by subject heading, choose the subject search option and type the subject heading into the search box without any punctuation.

This website gives information about the PBS program as well as links to special features, primary sources and other helpful resources. “Spanning the momentous years from 1863 to 1877 ... Reconstruction shows how, in just a few years, a series of stunning events ‐‐ the Emancipation Proclamation, the Fourteenth Amendment granting ex‐slaves citizenship in 1868, the enfranchisement of blacks the following year – reversed centuries‐old patterns of race relations in America. People who for generations had been the property of others were now free to run their own lives.” See the Audiovisuals section of this bibliography for links to this film.

Also included are important Civil War figures and the battles that made them famous.

150th Gettysburg. Gettysburg Convention & Visitors Bureau. http://www.gettysburgcivilwar150.com/default.aspx
“The Battle of Gettysburg changed the direction of the war and the morale of the nation. After a long string of victories by the Confederacy, the war moved north as troops sought supplies and looked to secure key victories with Southern occupation in Union territory. For three hot days in July 1863, this small Pennsylvania town was the scene of hard‐fought battles, esteemed bravery and the bloodshed of 51,000 men. When the fighting ended, Gettysburg was crippled by the devastation and the thousands of wounded soldiers left behind. The 2,400 residents of Gettysburg were left with 22,000 dead and wounded soldiers, 5,000 dead horses and a town ravaged by war. The American Civil War raged on for nearly two more years, but the Confederacy never recovered from the loss at Gettysburg.”
National Park Service. http://www.nps.gov/cwindepth/civwar150_states.html “The National Park Service commemorates a defining event in our nation's history and its legacy in the continuing fight for civil rights. Join us … Civil War 150, State by State: The following is a list of states that have sought to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War. Please keep in mind that not all of the states that played a role in this historical event have chosen to establish an official commemorative effort.”
North Carolina Civil War Sesquicentennial. http://www.nccivilwar150.com/ “In preparing for the anniversary of the war, some states have formed legislatively authorized and funded commissions. North Carolina has not. In light of uncertainty as to whether a commission would take shape, the North Carolina Office of Archives and History, part of the Department of Cultural Resources, in 2006 formed an in‐house committee to guide and promote agency‐sponsored observances. Organizers, with the counsel of a panel of academic advisers, endorsed a wide range of programs intended to appeal to diverse audiences. The themes of Freedom, Sacrifice, and Memory encompass a wide range of topics and points of view.”
PACivilWar150: Pennsylvania Civil War. http://pacivilwar150.com/ “A cornerstone of the commemoration, www.PACivilWar150.com is a comprehensive Web site containing an interactive timeline, a statewide events calendar and many in‐depth stories recounting the experiences of real Pennsylvanians during the Civil War.”
Vicksburg National Military Park, Mississippi. National Park Service. http://www.nps.gov/vick/planyourvisit/vicksburg‐national‐military‐park‐cw150‐events.htm
“Congress established Vicksburg National Military Park in 1899 to commemorate the campaign, siege, and defense of Vicksburg, and to preserve the history of the battles and operations conducted on the ground where they were fought. In 1990, Congress expanded the park's interpretive mandate to include the campaign and siege of Vicksburg from April 1862 to July 4,
