WHY CREATE AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY?
Creating an annotated bibliography hasseveral
advantages over a standard bibliography:
y Writing annotations for all your sources will
make you more familiar with your topic.y Most annotationsinclude a summary and a
short evaluation ofthe source.
y Writing evaluationsinvolvesthinking
critically about your source and how it relatesto your topic.
y Your reader benefits from learning the content
of your sources.

HOW DO IWRITE THE ANNOTATION?
Annotations are written in paragraph form. There are
three main parts:
y SUMMARY: This annotation style includes the topic
of the book or article and its main arguments. Most
summary annotations are about 150 words or less.y EVALUATIVE: This annotation style includes an
evaluation of the source. Who is the author? What
are his/her qualifications? Who isthe intended audience
and doesthe article or book adequately addressthe topic?
Isthere a biasto the writing? Wasthis article relevantto
my research topic?
y REFLECTION: Wasthissource helpful to you? How does
it help you shape your argument? How can you use this
source in your research project? Hasit changed how you
think about your topic?
