The TAOS TSL1401R-EVM/ParallaxTSL1401-DB (#28317) linescan imagingdaughterboard provides one-dimensionalsight to almost any microcontroller. It isdesigned for plug-in compatibility withParallax's BS2peMotherboard but can beused with other BASICStamps, the ParallaxPropeller, PICs, andAVRs, to name just afew. It is a platformsuitable not only forevaluating TAOS'sTSL1401R imaging chip, but also for incorporationinto OEM products, aswell as hobbyist, robotic, and educationalplatforms. The TSL1401-DB includes the TAOSTSL1401R 128-pixel sensor chip, a 7.9mmfocal length imaging lens, and controlelectronics to aid in capturing images forevaluation. It produces a clocked analogdata output, whose voltage levelscorrespond to the light intensity at eachpixel. By means of an analog-to-digitalconverter (or even a simple digital logicthreshold), image data are easilytransferred to a microcontroller to detectobjects, edges, gaps, holes, liquid levels, textures, emissive sources, simplebarcodes, and other visible features.Combining it with the BS2pe Motherboardand a suitable output device, one canconstruct a complete inspection system ina very compact form factor.
Central to the TSL1401-DB's ease of use isthe 50-page manual and its accompanyingsoftware and firmware, all of which can bedownloaded for free. The AVR coprocessorfirmware for the BS2pe Motherboard, for
example, provides acompletely scriptableimaging frontend thatcaptures images in thebackground and locatesfeatures, while the BASICStamp is busy with othertasks. Also included is aprogramming templateand examples for boththe Motherboard and theBASIC Stamp 2.As an aid to seeing whatthe camera sees in real
time, both for setting up and alignmentand for trying various detection strategies,a PC-hosted monitor program providesboth an oscilloscope view of the pixels, aswell as a sweeping view of multiple scanslaid side-by-side. It also includes user-selectable measurement tools for locatingedges, counting pixels, computing extremaand averages, and the like. This program isdesigned to be used with the BASIC Stamp2pe Motherboard and automaticallyuploads the PBASIC code necessary forcommunication.Future add-ons for the TSL1401-DB'stopside mezzanine connector include theLightSync-DBM for synchronizing tofluorescent lighting, and the Strobe-DBM,which will provide LED front-lighting.
