FOCUS

Some people travel all over the world but never really go anywhere. True travel is in the heart and these people never reach out to others from the heart. Some spend almost their whole lives in one place, yet they stretch out their hearts to all humanity. This is the power of their prayer which makes them Godlike. When we say God is everywhere, we mean that God touches everywhere, sustains all things in existence. In prayer we share the reaching out to all things. The world is bigger than me.

National Reconciliation Week 2017 Theme: 'Let's Take the Next Steps'

National Reconciliation Week is held annually from 27 May - 3 June. It is a time to celebrate and build on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians. Each year has a different theme set by Reconciliation Australia. Preceded by National Sorry Day on 26 May NRW is framed by two key events in Australia’s history, which provide strong symbols for reconciliation: 27 May 1967 - the referendum that saw more than 90 percent of Australians vote to give the Australian Government power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people and recognise them in the census. 3 June 1992 - The Australian High Court delivered the Mabo decision, which recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

have a special relationship with the land. This paved the way for land rights known as native title.

PARISH PLANNED GIVING

The Planned Giving Program is the major source of income for our Parish, and is vital in enabling the Parish to meet its ongoing and increasing expenses. Your generous support is needed to enable pastoral ministry and outreach, and the maintenance of our buildings. Fifteen per cent of Parish Planned Giving is contributed to Diocesan Charitable Works, such as Centacare. This portion of Planned Giving is tax deductable. · New planned giving envelopes for the 2017/2018 financial year are available at the Cathedral, Gracemere, Mt Morgan and the Range Chapel. · Envelopes for givers who formerly worshipped at St Vincent’s or St Peter’s are at the Cathedral. If you would like your envelopes sent to a different church, please contact the Parish Office on 4927 6744 or rockhamptonsouth@cdor.org.au · New givers are always welcome – please complete a pledge form which can be found at the door of the church or contact the Parish Office. In addition to envelopes, the very convenient options of giving via direct debit or credit card are also available. · Receipts for the 2016/2017 financial year will be issued in July.

Many thanks for your generosity!

The Rockhampton South Parish will celebrate ‘Flores de Mayo’ (Flowers of May) in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and as tribute and thanksgiving for all her blessings and intercessions, this Sunday 28th May at 4.00 p.m. at St Joseph’s Cathedral. This year coincides with the Centenary of the Apparition of the Virgin of Fatima to Francisco, Lucia and Jacinta. Saint Francisco and Saint Jacinta were canonized by the Holy Father on 13th May at the anniversary of the Apparition. The highlight of ‘Flores de Mayo’ is the ‘Santacruzan’ a religious festivity to celebrate the finding of the relics of the Holy Cross by Queen Helena or St. Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor of Rome. ‘Santacruzan’ starts with a novena to the Blessed Virgin Mary where the Holy Rosary is offered for nine days. The Filipino community in Rockhampton has been following the tradition over the last 3 years, where children join in offering flowers to the Blessed Virgin. It will be more significant this year with the participation of children from different cultural backgrounds, highlighting a true spirit of diversity in our Parish. You are invited to join us at St Joseph’s Cathedral for the Eucharistic celebration of ‘Flores de Mayo’. Please bring a plate to share after the Mass.
