PASTOR LUCY’S OFFICE HOURS
In July Pr. Lucy will be holding
weekly “Office Hours” at
West Side Family Restaurant –
Thursdays at 8:30 am.
Join her for coffee, conversation, prayer, questions about last
week’s sermon or anything else you’d like to discuss!
Meet with Pastor Lucy One to One
Pr. Lucy would love to meet 1-to-1 with as many people in the congregation and community as pos-sible over the next several months. A 1-to-1 rela-tional meeting is a natural but uncommon con-versation about values, motivations, and life sto-ries. Its goal is to build deeper understanding and relationship. Couples might choose to meet togeth-er or separately – whichever you’re most comforta-ble with. There will be a sign-up sheet outside the church office with morning & evening time slots – or email Pastor directly at pastor@stpaulbeloit.org to arrange a time that works for you.

MESSAGE FROM PASTOR LUCY — For the next several weeks in worship I’ll be
preaching a series on the Letter to the
Ephesians. So let me take this space to give
you a brief introduction to the book – and tell
you why I think it’s a great one for us to read
in today’s world.
Ephesians is one of the New Testament let-
ters attributed to the Apostle Paul. Most bib-
lical scholars today believe it wasn’t actually
Paul who wrote it, though, but one of his stu-
dents or someone wanting to honor Paul and
to have the respect Paul’s name garnered. It’s also different than some
of the other letters in the New Testament in that it doesn’t really ad-
dress specific issues of the local church, instead it’s written with
broader – more universal – themes and applications for the whole
church. For this reason we think it was probably a “circular letter” – a
letter that traveled from congregation to congregation.
Ephesus was a bustling Greek port city filled with people of different
places, cultures, and religions engaged in learning, trade, and tourism.
The themes of Ephesians helped Christians then – and now! –
think about what it means to be Christian in a wider world filled
with people of all kinds of beliefs & practices, and with powerful
institutions & cultural forces that push back against the Christian
worldview. The letter especially deals with divisions that could distract
the church from being the one united people of God we’re called to be
– in their time the dividing line fell between Jews & Gentiles, but there
are some dividing lines today that still threaten our unity in Christ! It
also addresses themes of power & the power dynamics in everyday re-
lationships, what grace and love mean in the “real world”, and what
gifts each of us has to offer the church. I hope you’ll join us in worship
in August as we talk about what all that means for us today!
Questions? Want to know more? I'd love to chat at coffee hour – or any
time you want to talk about the bible!
Blessings,
Bishop Elect Viviane Thomas-Breitfeld Installation

2018 Youth Gathering Report A HUGE thank you to all the faithful folk at St. Paul who supported us on our trip to Houston this summer for the ELCA's triennial Youth Gathering. I asked our young people, "What was meaningful for you about the Gathering?" - here is what they wanted to share with you:
“The ELCA Youth Gathering was meaningful to me because I could surround myself with people who supported me through my faith, even though I didn’t know them. It’s hard to fathom 30,000 Lutheran youth in one building, but it was pure love and happiness the whole time. I could worship with kids who were just like me. I really enjoyed not having to hide my religion away from people.” – Tori Carr
“The 2018 Houston Youth Gathering was one of the best bonding experiences I have ever had. I met loads of new people, got to relate to my faith to people I have never met before, and listen to speakers who have had similar experiences to me. It's amazing to see so many people relating to each other and appreciating how different cultures can come together.” – Xander Murry
“The ELCA Youth Gathering was an incredible experience that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. The sheer power of 30,000 teenagers worshipping and singing in NRG Stadium filled me with unimaginable joy. However, I find that my most meaningful experiences come from the more intimate Synod day. Tori, Xander, and I broke and distributed bread for communion and worshipped alongside other Wisconsin teenagers in a very welcoming service. I also introduced our synod to Bishop Viviane Thomas-Breitfeld which is a moment that remains very special to me. Over-all, the Gathering refreshed my faith and instilled a greater hope for the future of the church.” – Audrey McManigle
These young folks are more than “our future” – they are our present in the church, and your investment in them and support of them means the world. Thank you! I can’t wait to see how God continues to use them to bless & challenge us with their faith & passion!
St. Paul is hosting on Tuesday, Aug. 7 from 5:30 -7:30 pm. We are looking for volunteers to help with games, serving food, set-up, clean-up, and to help at our School Supply Store. Please sign up to help on the sign-up sheet on the board by the office.
St. Paul is offering a School Supply Store for everyone. Please help us by donating items from the following list: crayons-24 count, large pink eraser, glue sticks or bottles of glue, loose-leaf paper-wide ruled, markers-basic colors-washable, #2 pencils, pens-blue or black ink, pencil box or pencil case, pocket folders, ruler-12 inch, spiral notebooks-wide ruled. Please bring dona-tions to church by Aug. 5.
