THE GREAT COMMANDMENT
Matt 22:34-40
What is love?Love is a strong affection, a warm attachment,
an unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for others. (Merriam Webster Dictionary)
“Our highest word, and the synonym of God.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson)
“The heart’s immortal thirst to be completely known and all forgiven.” (Henry Van Dyke)
“When an others’ person’s needs are as important as your own.” (Abe Burrows)
“Thou shall not avenge,
nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people but thou shall love
thy neighbour as thyself:
I am the Lord.” (Lev 19:18, KJV)
“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all
thy heart, and with all thy soul and with all thy
mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
On these two commandments hang all the law and the
prophets.” (v. 37-40, KJV)
And the second is like unto it,
If this is not attainable this will only show the corruption, the depravity, the degenerated heart of man. One must first love God with all his heart before loving the unsightly, the ugly, the disagreeable, the vile, and the obnoxious. It is only with the heart of the Lord that we can love the unloving and unlovable.
The Hebrew thought of
“all thy heart” as
symbolizing the whole self. Love
God with all your heart
and you will love your
neighbour as yourself.
Jesus proclaims: Love! Everything is
love.
“Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.” (Prov 154:17, KJV)
“Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and
hatred therewith.”
(Prov 154:17, KJV)
From the words of Christ: “Thou shalt love thy
neighbour as thyself.” (Matt 19:19, KJV)
A new commandment I give to you,
that you love one another.” (John 13:34, KJV)
Apostle Paul writes:
“Owe no man anything but
love one another: for
he that loveth
another hath fulfilled the
law.”
(Rom, 13:8, KJV)
