The Green Footprint Group

Eco RoadShow-Now a GFG member school!

Greener schools for the future

GFG

What is the GFG?And why should you care about it?!

A few key words you need to know!

Carbon dioxide

Pollution

Photosynthesis

Biodiversity

Global warming

What impact do humans have on animals?

Why this matters to humans and the planet

Examples of Habitats

What is biodiversity? The earth has supported life

for over 3.5 billion years!

Biodiversity is what we call the way animals and plants live together

Different habitats have different animals and plants living in them, we can then say that they have different biodiversity in them

How much biodiversity is in your school?

Biodiversity in your school

PlantsInsects

Other species Your teachers?!

What is waste?

Rubbish that you throw away

Unwanted items Can’t be reused A waste of resources too:

Energy Water

Your waste might not be

someone else’s waste

How much do we waste? We currently waste far too much- think of how

much you throw away at home UK businesses waste £1 in every £3 in energy

that they use Each person throws away seven times their

body weights in food rubbish each year On average, up to 50% of rubbish in a dustbin

can be composted The UK produces more than 434 million tonnes

of waste every year!

Recycling!

Another idea is to recycle some of the materials that you would have thrown away

Up to 60% of rubbish ending up in the dustbin is able to be recycled.

Instead of binning it, you save it and then put it into a recycling bin for it to be reused

What can you recycle? Cans, glass, paper and plastic can all be

recycled If you have a black box at home you can

put cans, glass and paper into it for the council to recycle it

What is renewable energy?

Energy that can be used over and over again and will never run out

Cleaner and less harmful to the environment that fossil fuels

The main renewable energy supplies are wind, water, solar and biofuel

The UK has set itself a goal of deriving 10% of UK electricity from renewable sources by 2010- is this enough?

Wind Power!

Solar Power!

The world in 100 years…

What would you like the world to be like in 100 years?

At home

At school

So how can the GFG help your school to help the environment?! Eco-schools bid You could buy some of our bags! Eco-codes Lesson activities Helping you out when you need it! And helping you all to make a difference to

the environment!

And now time for the quiz!

1) Name four things that cause pollution…………………

2) Give a brief description of what global warming is………………

3) What does this symbol stand for….……….?

CO2

4) Name three place’s in your school that has lots of biodiversity in it, and what kinds of animal lives there?

Last question…………

It’s a tricky one!

5) Who can remember what it’s called when plants turn carbon dioxide in oxygen???
