What is Haiku Challenge?
The Haiku Challenge is a Haiku writing challenge that runs in the month of February
every year. Write a Haiku or set of Haiku every day and share them in the linky tool to
enjoy the words.
How it began?
As February being the month of love, I decided myself to express my love for Haiku,
after penning down close to one hundred Haiku the love for it has become immeasurable
and that made me throw a Challenge to myself, ‗The Haiku Challenge!‘ in 2011.
The Journey...!
It‘s a sweet journey and Aw, my sweet child is aging two now, and I consider the
journey as a sweet achievement as it helped to discover talents.
Summary...!
I thought it was my dream when reading you but now I realize that it happened in real
while drafting this. It was fun, 29 days of fun with Haiku, exploration of different
signatures of Haiku (Haiga, Acrostic Haiku, Pi-Ku, Naisaiku and Haibun). I hope you
enjoyed writing for the challenge as much as I did when hosting the challenge, if not
then I should call it as Failure of Haiku Challenge and not Success!
In this edition, 45 of you registered for the challenge, 54 challenged, 22 of you
completed the challenging challenge colourfully and made this challenge a grand
success! Three Cheers to all!!! Thank you!
I love numbers and I‘ve been known to cherish stats a lot. In this edition, we had 29
days, 28 challenging themes, 7 different forms, and the poets kick started the
challenge expressing their love for words. In all, we read 54 poets, 1001 entries ~
(1706 Haiku); that‘s an average of 35 entries (59 Haiku) each day. The minimum entry
was 29 entries on Day 25, 26 & 27 and the maximum entry was 41 entries on Day 1,
2 and 9. Considering the count of Haiku, the least was 34 on Day 7 and the maximum
entry was 108 on Day 23.
I must thank everyone for adding smile to my heart! Now, it is my turn to return the
favours by crowning ‗KING OF HAIKU’, ‗QUEEN OF HAIKU‘, ‗STAR NEWBIE OF
THE CHALLENGE‘, ‗CHEERFUL CHALLENGER‘, ‗FAVOURITE CHALLENGER‘, ‗FIRST
SWEET CHALLENGER‘ and ‗LAST SWEET CHALLENGER‘.
Thanks for making my job easier with your precious votes. Here we go....

Seek that purpose. Nothing happens without a reason. So does our lives. It is not just to exist. But to live. Fully awake and alive. To leave it a better place than when we

to other things. High Demon Asmodeus tells me that you haven‘t moved on, your answer please…‖
I essayed a little bow, partially to hide my blushes, ―I am sorry Master,‖ I turned to

The Deafblind Manual Alphabet is the best way to communicate with someone who is Deafblind. In fact it would be a sin not to try to communicate with them. You can learn
it quickly, and here's how you do it. Stick out your index finger (that's the long one next to your thumb) on your right hand. Fold your other fingers out of the way. Think
of this finger as your pen. You are going to use it to write - not on paper, but on your
deafblind friends left hand which they will hold out for you.

I attended an all-girl Catholic boarding school for high school. My education, steeped
in tradition including education about faith, trust, love of God and the relationship with Him and the Trinity, quite naturally included learning elements of evil and sin.
These years were immeasurable and invaluable in creating good academic habits,
lifelong friendships, and shaping my view of the importance of prayer, and its lifeline
connection to God.
I am encouraged most faiths are supportive of this Divine Connection as part of one‘s spiritual journey – supporting my thoughts … ―we are all connected‖.

Day 16 – February 16th – Theme or Word: Sin Form: Haibun
I am an oncology nurse. I see very ill patients every day. It sometimes feels as a sin to
do what the physician wants me to do. Of course the goal is to make the patient healthy again, but there are lines I don't want to cross. Patients, e.g. with lung cancer, are at
the end of there strength and nevertheless the physician wants to do everything. I can understand that. Physicians are healers, but not to all costs. Very ill patients not
becoming healthy anymore must have the chance to die in peace and with a certain
quality of Life and in dignity. Patients must have a perfect way to die. I think it's a sin, an imperfection, to cross the lines and take the patient's dignity and quality of life.

Day 16 – February 16th – Theme or Word: Sin Form: Haibun
There's a house not far from me that never changes. It simply is.
To me, it is like a broken link in the chain of life. It is like a stage without actors, a sky without weather changes, an earth drought-ridden.
It's a sin to let a house bathe in the sunlight and shadows of the seasons, shuttered,
alone...
No circulation No tending of the garden
No family love
A grim door that never greets nor farewells, stands like a locked memory - of someone.
A gated driveway locked in bland nowhere. Somehow there is a sense of a child, discarded, wondering if parents will ever remember to come home; like a body adrift in
limbo, seeking a heart and a soul.
Scraps of energy Like shredded, lost momentos
Mere driveway relics
There's a house not far from me that never breathes, never blinks.
It simply survives.
It simply is.

Day 16 – February 16th – Theme or Word: Sin Form: Haibun
Young children should be protected and sheltered against the evils and greed of men
and women. As much as possible, they should sleep peacefully in the comfort and love
of their family and home. Though I understand that poverty and ignorance may push poor parents to sell or make them work in sweat shops or prostitution, I believe it is a
sin to take away their innocence, and let them carry the worldly burdens of their family at a tender age.

Day 14 – February 14th – Theme or Word: Love or Valentine
Who can love a stone
set up for remembering one whose heart is stilled?
Who can love a fence, shredding clouds with fearsome barbs,
stinging down the sun?
Who can love the frost,
gripping stone and twig and dust in its deathly vise?
Day 15 – February 15th – Theme: Paint the Image
Who can love the stone
in memory of the one
who can love no more?
a desire shattered may as well be tossed away
somewhere it can rest
Day 16 – February 16th – Theme or Word: Sin Form: Haibun
On a self-guided tour of the Ex-Convento de Guadalupe, I am startled by a sudden
blast of live mariachi music. I step into a little glassed-in alcove on the second floor, where I look down into the cathedral on a wedding in progress.
Would it be a sin for me to stay until the nuptials end?
Clad in jeans and sneakers, I am hardly dressed for a wedding. (Stiletto heels on cobblestones are killers.) I feel as though I‘m reliving the biblical parable about the guy
who shows up at a royal wedding without the proper attire. The king is offended, and orders the intruder to be thrown out into the darkness where ―there shall be weeping
and gnashing of teeth.‖ (You can read the parable in Matthew 22.)
For at least forty-five minutes, I hover near the entrance to the cathedral, waiting for
the bride and groom. No one tells me to leave, so I reach into my pocket for my camera.
bride and groom appear
twelve sparrows in the courtyard
chattering blessings
In the Museo Zacatecano, I am transfixed by a painting of a woman holding her head in her hands—because it has been chopped off. There is no detailed biography, not a
paragraph, not even a sentence to tell this woman‘s story. Just a name: Santa Quiteria.
After I leave the museum, I go online and find out that Quiteria was one of nine girls
born at the same time to a noblewoman. Quiteria‘s mother was so disgusted at delivering such a large litter, with not a single boy, that she told the midwife to drown
them all in the river.
The midwife couldn‘t do it, and the girls were taken in by a couple (or maybe several
couples) in a remote village.
The girls grew up together and formed their own Godly Gang of Nine, smashing Roman idols and setting jailed Christians free. Eventually, however, all the sisters died or were
killed by the government, Quiteria by beheading.
Not for her own sins Quiteria lost her head,
but sins of others.
Day 16 – February 16th – Theme or Word: Sin Form: Haibun

Day 16 – February 16th – Theme or Word: Sin Form: Haibun
My sin is my shame,
not for you to pass judgement but to pray for me.
Will you welcome me in church on the day of my sin? Most tend to think not, and
therefore do not come. They fear the harsh judgment of those within and have not been informed correctly of the teachings of Christ. We talk a good game, us Christian
folk, but all too often we fail to deliver. Would we wash the feet of the homeless man if he walked through the door on Sunday? Feed many with what we have to multiply?
Shall we love the adulteress who confesses her sin, or set upon her with stones? Read
the words again and answer the popular question of our time: what would Jesus do?

Day 16 – February 16th – Theme or Word: Sin Form: Haibun
Sin-engendered GUILT- Purifier of the soul
marred by wounds and scars.
You sin. Sooner or later, guilt is born. It grows. It tortures. Engulfs you into its
darkness. Plunges you into despondency. Makes you feel disgusted with yourself. And the fact that you, and only you, are responsible for the sins you have committed adds
to the misery. You have nowhere to go. You are helpless.
For such times of torment, God has bestowed upon us the blessing of Repentance. Yes!
This is the only way you can bask in peace again. Shed tears. Plead for His mercy. Beg for His forgiveness.
The consequence of your sincere repentance is something very beautiful - Purification of your soul.
As you are repenting out of guilt, your soul is being cleansed of the marks left by your sins.
Guilt is the worst feeling but it has the best effect.
A PURE SOUL.

Day 16 – February 16th – Theme or Word: Sin Form: Haibun
My Mother always taught me,Lying is a sin and liars are always punished.
But I lied. When I was a little girl,to my teacher. I did not do my homework and I persuaded her
that I was ill. I was excused from punishment but I felt an unfamiliar feeling. That was
guilt,of lying.
How many of us are honest? Don't we lie for a day off or when we are late, for work or
school? All of us lie,for one or the other reason. We lie.We break hearts and trust.
But Who are those, who lie to their conscience? Perhaps, the real Sinners. But Lying is today's need,of a fast paced lifestyle. If we don't,we'd be struck.
We are sinners not by birth but by helplessness. And the only way of repentance is a promise of not repeating.
If there is no repentance,All the world will be a Lie.
Be true to your soul Truth is repentance for Lie
for a Conscience.

Any Poetry Form of your Wish
My domain name ‗winterofthemind‘ is inspired from the Novella,'Portrait of Jennie' by
Robert Nathan. There are times,I feel my mind is frozen and cannot think and is caught in uncertainity of how long it will last. And so I decided to take this phrase as my
domain name.
One summer morn,
My mind froze, cold and dead Winter of the mind.
I am fond of Blank verses and my soul yearns to learn and write them. I have mess of
incomplete lines which my heart doesnot approve, which are but part of my soul.
Some day I wish to write some, which my heart would approve.
Old sheets breathe darkness, Blank verses rise, blend with
Invisible lines.
I tried writing one for the challenge.
I tried my best to play by the rules but could not scan.(My scansion notes are misplaced)
This Blank verse is about those verses, My heart doesnot approve and lie in the deepest corner of my closet.
In the deepest corner of my closet,
lies dead a box filled with old stained sheets,
From the yesteryears,of verses and hopes are some incomplete blank verses, with
sheets and stains making the lines fade away Some of the verses from heart, some from soul
Invisible lines yearns to be redrawn
Verses in my head wishing to fall out
and the moments engulfs enliven past
For the stains on sheets, the air smells like hope, that would arise and diffuse at twilight
When everything turns and returns back, Are sheets wrapped neatly in box, deep in dark
My Blank verses and Invisible lines.
Form: Blank Verse.
Blank verse is poetry written in unrhymed iambic pentameter. It has been described as probably the most common and influential form that English poetry has taken since the
sixteenth century. The first documented use of blank verse in the English language was by Henry Howard
and Earl of Surrey.
P.S. I have not scanned my Verse, but I've crafted by the rules.

Ah, getting trusted
and then choosing betrayal;
mind sins sans soul..
Whenever I find someone putting all his trust in me; taking me around the darker corners of his inner-space, I have always felt that at that moment I am receiving the
greatest compliment: ―You are trusted.‖ But, how difficult it is to hold on to someone‘s secret. Sometimes it becomes difficult but then that is the test. If you succumb and
share the same with another then one thing is sure: Pleasure of being a trust worthy
person will be lost. Mind will be committing a Sin of Heart. Soul would be absent in those dark moments..
Temptation will be greater when betraying someone would mean some material gain for you. But then, a part of your spirit would die. Getting trusted is a glowing tribute
anyone can ever get. Let your spirit glow. Be trustworthy. God bless!

Wasted lives
He resides on the pavement eating scraps of food when he is lucky to get them. Elsewhere, those who have a house to live in, hot food and a job that brings an income
complain about petty things.
When it rains, he seeks shelter hoping he won‘t be driven away. Nobody knows what
he‘s thinking. Maybe he has (shattered) dreams. In spite of everything, he is content. Or appears to be. A warm and cozy home is not enough for some. Neither is a full
wallet.
Another day. Another lane. A flower lady makes a living with her son selling flowers by
the roadside. Twenty one years pass. One day, he hugs her, promising to be back soon. An hour later she receives a call informing her he has drowned. Her only support
snatched away. It is a sin that
Money makes us unhappy
Can it buy pleasure?

Going A-Musing
My space on the world wide web Welcomes you dear friend
Initially I had fun writing anything that came to mind. (I still do!). But over the years, I
became a little more focused (read: wrote in sentence case, used
punctuation…kidding!).
I browsed around, made friends, had the privilege of reading the wonderful words on other blogs, I continued to write, sharing Life. Fun. Humor. Love. Trials. Errors.
Relationships. Health. Tips. Resources. Technology. Experiences. Stories. Inspiration.
Because variety is the spice of life.

Web space where I live, learn, share Going A-Musing
I added new pages An E-Library listing useful resources. An About Me page. I played with widgets. I played with codes. I played with my dashboard. I figured out, through
trial and error, various how-to-s and how not-to-s. I had arguments with my inner critic. I learned it was not necessary to be perfect. I realized happiness is a D.I.Y
Project.
I made friends. Close friends. Loyal friends. Deep connections.
In June 2011, I moved the blog to its own domain and simply called it
www.vidyasury.com. I still have miles to go before I sleep – but I like to keep it simple around here. Writing is what I am really interested in, as it brings me joy to share
what I read, learn, enjoy.
I live, I learn, I share. I cherish the relationships I build. I believe in the power of
positive thinking.

of hearth and
home
and blazing fire

will make me giggle

a scene awaiting a small boy in welly boots
to bring it to life.
Day 16 – February 16th – Theme or Word: Sin Form: Haibun
A convent education inculcates a sense of guilt: for running in the corridors, shouting in
the playground; not eating school dinner or eating a sweetie before Holy Communion; not wearing that dreadful school hat when cycling home – you know, the one the wind
used as a kind of sea anchor, flowing out behind.
We‘re told not to sin
when we are young, so why is sinning so much fun?

Two kinds of waiting - impatiently or resigned.

Day 19 – February 19th – Theme: Seasons Type: Kigo
Jaded by winter longing for spring‘s benison
to warm our old bones
spurts of floral growth
horses kick up their heels, run joyful and alive
heavy heat hangs low
midsummer backward glances
to those dew-fresh days
forward to red and, golden leaves, first frost; the slow
wind-down of autumn
hibernate to wait
cosily beside the hearth for spring to return.

giving what we can
Day 24 – February 24th – Words: Dream Walks
my ideal walks
are many and various and all on the flat
Beside a river -
anywhere, if you‘ll come with me -

beside the sea we will breathe the bracing air
to enrich our lives
to enrich our lives we will walk together
beside a river

Raw, that‘s what they were—all raw, energy unkempt and sagging. Breathing heavily to remind themselves they were alive. Their rabid rabbit eyes bored holes through
clothes; they had listened to their mothers and eaten all their carrots. They had developed a taste for them—the crunch had no other substitute. And everywhere you
turned, there they were, with their sunken features and sharpened teeth. Twinkling
eyes sparkled and shattered the picture frames that caged them. They smelled of origan and martyrdom, but plumb the depths of their cisterns: beware the nematodes.
Woven partners of the snake, Medusa‘s braids. And bathed in sour cream.

The whispered tones fell on deaf ears; I was a thrill-seeker and here were the thrills.
Thousands of them, but I sought out the ones worthwhile. Time is too precious to waste on some lame tame baby ride. I stalked my prey with the skill of a half-starved
cheetah, and twice as fast. I rushed headlong into awaiting queue, but waiting was not
what I had planned to do. Throwing caution to the wind I loudly exclaimed,
―These books, please, to-go Auden, Millay, Herbert, Poe–
I‘m the wordcoaster!‖
Day 29 – February 29th – Theme or Word: Journey
Stop and take a rest.
Ev‘ry journey has an end. Even circles pause.
