The Mayor’s Great Gatsby Casino Gala 2013
Saturday, November 9 • Miami
Shores Country Club
Travel Back For The Evening To The Early 1920’s When
South Florida Roared!
You don’t have to be a long time resident of Miami Shores to realize that there is something about this small village that echoes another era. It runs deeper than the prewar and mid-century homes that we
see on every street and lives within the hearts of each resident. Join your neighbors for a memorable evening that pays homage to the past and opens a window to the future.
On November 9 the Miami Shores Community Alliance will host the Mayors Annual Gala. The event is the sole contributor to the volunteer-run Community Alliance, which supports more than twenty local schools, organizations and initiatives. You can learn more about the Alliance by visiting: www.miamishoresalliance.com.
You will not want to miss what is sure to be a magical evening that will bring you back to the decadent days of the roaring 1920s. Tickets to the Gala are $150 per person and last year it sold out. You can also buy a raffle for just $100 for a chance to win incredible prizes like:
A 6-day/5-night Gourmet Inclusive® family vacation for up to 2 adults and 2 children in a family suite at any of the award winning Azul Hotels, by Karisma the Mexican Riviera, Maya, Cancun or their newest beachfront property in Negril, Jamaica, valued at $10,000. Or A Miami Heat basketball signed by the three kings — Lebron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosch —valued at $2,500-$5,000. Or, meet Jennifer Grey from NBC 6 for a behind the scenes tour of their studio and weather station and get to watch a Saturday morning broadcast. There are many other fabulous prizes to win.
The Chamber urges everyone to support the Mayor’s Gala on November 9.

The Greater Miami Shores Egret is the official publication of the Greater Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce. It is published monthly and is distributed to the 5,400 homes, apartments, and businesses within the villages of Miami Shores and Biscayne Park free of charge. Advertising is limited to organizations that are members of the Chamber. Information in it is intended for Chamber member organizations as well as the residents of our communities. Please contact the Chamber for more information on membership, advertising, distribution, or content.
Barry University and Miami Shores Village have a long
and happy relationship going back many years. The
leaders of Barry have always fostered a partnership with
our community, as “Barry’s Home Town”.
Indeed, banners for Barry hang from light posts in our
downtown, Village Place, merchants have posters in their
windows welcoming Barry students and staff, and decals
on their doors offering discounts on products and services.
On any given day teachers and administrative staff can be seen lunching at
Pizzafiore, or students seen congregating after classes are over for the day at
Starbucks or Iron Sushi.
Under the leadership of Barry’s President, Sister Linda Bevilacqua, various Miami
Shores Village Councils, and the Chamber’s Board of Directors, this mutually
important partnership lives on even when the students graduate, and come and go.
The youthful vigor of the Barry student body adds vitality and fun to our town, and
we hopefully provide a welcoming, safe, and enticing picture to prospective students
and their parents, when they are evaluating a college for their child.
Recently Barry unveiled a new identity for the school, along with a bolder and
colorful new version of their Buccaneer mascot. Both are featured on our cover of
the Egret this month, and more information about how Barry plans to implement
its new look will be featured in this publication next year.
Please join me in acknowledging how important Barry University is to the greater
Miami Shores area, and how much we value their presence amongst us!

Last month, internationally-recognized Tibetan Buddhist monk Geshe Pema Dorjee visited The cushman school to share his message of mutual respect and caring with kindergarten through middle school aged students. He has created and continues to direct charitable humanitarian projects in impoverished and remote regions of Himalayan India and Nepal. The projects include creating schools and orphanages, facilitating medical care for the sick and elderly, bringing clean water and toilets to these remote areas, teaching sustainable agricultural skills for survival, supporting drug rehabilitation, and caring for homeless children.
His U.S. tour was sponsored by Tibetan Buddhist Charitable Aid, a not-for-profit organization that supports his humanitarian projects. To see a short documentary about his latest project, The Clean Stove Project, click on the YouTube link at www.buddhistcharity.org.
His discussion was in line with Cushman’s core focus on character development as a priority in its students. His visit was a treat for Cushman students and it is an important message for all in our community and beyond!
Miami country Day school’s Parents’ association will host its 18th annual Holiday Shopping Bazaar on Tuesday, November 12, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the school’s gym. With the help of teachers Dr. Mari Conea (MUN Sponsor), Andrew Castle, and Michael Fallik, the conference was a huge success.
Country Day is also proud to announce that three All State Choir competitors have moved on to be finalists for the All State competition. The finalists are Yakira Matisonn, Noah Billante, and Katarina Londono.

Paws, Claws & Jaws! our November “Pet of the Month” is Tato, an extremely intelligent Miniature schnauzer who graduated with honors from the Good Dog Bad Dog canine academy. His companion, shores realtor David Hunter of 98th street, says that Tato was even awarded a medal for “outstanding achievement”.
To submit a photo of your pet for a future
edition, just e-mail the photo and a short
description to chamber@miamishores.com.
Not everyone is interested in obedience training. Commands are nice to have, but aren’t
essential to living happily with a dog. Good manners are more universally desired, but
even in that department, what’s considered acceptable behavior varies from household to
household. It all boils down to a handful of things that all dogs need to have from their
owners. Here’s my bare-bones list of the must-dos with any pet dog:
Get him used to a leash: Most towns have leash laws, so in order to be a good canine-
owning citizen, you should introduce your pet to a leash. Even toy breeds aren’t exempt,
even though they’re small enough to tote under your arm. Using a flat-style lead and
a collar, leash walking teaches a dog to follow the boss and is the most practical way of
controlling him in social situations.
Use a kennel crate: A cage offers your pet a quiet sanctuary from the busy world. It allows
him to relax and de-stress in a den-like secure atmosphere. It’s an excellent housebreaking
tool and prevents destructive chewing when you can’t supervise.
exercise: Walking, swimming, playing ball, tug of war and rough-housing with other
puppies are examples of necessary exercise to ensure a physically and emotionally happy dog.
Give your dog a job: Dogs were never meant to be couch potatoes. Just look at the names of
the dog groups: Herding dogs, Working dogs, Gundogs. Most breeds were created to work
side by side with humans; it’s in their genes to be workers, but in the 21st Century, not
many of our pets have employment opportunities. Give your dog a job and you’ll see him
have fun while doing it and be more relaxed when he’s not. Retrieving a toy, barking and
protecting the fence-line, bringing in the morning paper or obeying sit/stay commands are
examples of practical, modern day jobs for our dogs.
Grooming: Expose your pet to being combed, having teeth brushed, ears cleaned, and toes
massaged. The more you do it, the more acceptable your pet will be to being handled this
way. Your vet and groomer will thank you.
socialize him with whatever you don’t have at home: If you don’t have kids, get your dog
around the neighbor’s children. Get him used to members of the opposite sex if you live
alone. If you don’t have stairs, take him someplace where you can practice going up and
down steps. Visit the dog park so he can meet other dogs if he’s an only “child.”
No jumping allowed: For dogs over 40 lbs., it’s essential to correct this bad behavior.
Teach him to show more respect, and you’ll start becoming a leader.
car rides: Even if you live in the city without a car, get your pet exposed to riding in a
vehicle. You’ll need to take him to the vet from time to time, and even most taxis allow
dog fares. All dogs need to learn to behave while in a motor vehicle.

Each month, we feature a question or a photograph here from our archives. The Miami Shores Country Club donates a $25 gift certificate to a randomly drawn person supplying the correct response. The winner is drawn on the 15th of the month.
Last month we ran a photo of an old two-story building that most readers pegged as being shot between 1950 and 1954, based upon the cars in the parking lot. We sneakily air-brushed out the name of the establishment. We had lots of incorrect guesses, ranging from Barry University to the Miami Military Academy to the Holiday Inn. The correct answer was North Shore Medical Center! This incredible photo hangs in their lobby. How the place has grown over the years! Our randomly drawn winner is rose cardelli. Congratulations and we hope you enjoy your visit to the Country Club.
NOVEMBER’S QUESTION:Who is this man? Hint, he has a major street named after him both in our area and in Asheville, NC.
Know the answer? Call the Chamber at 305-754-5466 or email chamber@miamishores.com.
