How is the Knowledge Bank Organized?

Arranged by Communities --a group or individual with a focus, i.e.

College or Individual Departments Research Grant Team Research CenterElements of Knowledge Bank Communities Produce knowledge in a digital format to

store, preserve and distribute it. Commun ities affiliated with OSU

What Computer Platform does the Knowledge Bank use?

Dspace – a digital system developed by MIT in collaboration with the Hewlett-Packard Corporation

It will capture, store, index and preserve OSU’s research and make it available to others.

What are the Benefits of the Knowledge Bank?

Immediate distribution of research to a worldwide audience

A Google search can be done for materials in the Knowledge Bank

Each item in the Knowledge Bank is assigned an identifier – a URL which can be used in a citation.

It provides a Web presence for the work and makes a commitment to preserve the platform if and when it is needed.

Contributing Work to the Knowledge Bank

Each community identifies who in the community is authorized to contribute materials to the Knowledge Bank.

The workflow with the Knowledge Bank and community determines to accept or reject a submission, edit metadata and to authorize the submission of materials.

Copyright and Intellectual Property

The contributor to the Knowledge Bank is the copyright holder.

The Knowledge Bank support team will assist communities and/or individual needs in terms of the copyright/intellectual property issues.

Restricting Access

Open access is encouraged and promoted, however, circumstances may be as such that restricted access to an item in a community’s collection is necessary.

The Knowledge Bank can limit or completely block access to materials.

Benefits of the Knowledge Bank

Provides easy, quick and reliable remote access to OSU’s research and scholarly materials.

Supports and encourages collaboration with colleagues.

Can Materials be Withdrawn from the Knowledge Bank?

There may be times when items are withdrawn from the Knowledge Bank, but they are not actually removed.

Items are just removed from view, thus preventing the loss of historical records.

All of the items are traced as a note with a message that says “removed from view at the request of the author” or some similar statement.

Knowledge Bank Changes and Metadata

Items cannot be edited or changedAn updated version may be submittedMetadata (Data about Data) – Manually

created metadata adds value because it ensures consitency.
