The ICS Approach
• Incident Commander – MOST KNOWLEDGEABLE…not necessarily the highest ranking corporate officer (EM Coordinator)
• Section Chiefs – MUST be trained in their jobs… NO OJT
• Special Staff – PIO is CRITICAL…don’t leave it to a secretary.
• ICS allows interoperability with first responders and allows the CEO to make timely decisions
• Involve Board and other key officers• Involve legal staff• Get in front of issues – Proact…not React
• Takes the disaster and breaks it into manageable elements, accomplished by knowledgeable staff
• System documents actions for later financial reimbursement
• Checklists and SOPs provide the 80% solution

How is My Packet Approved?
• The CERP® Commission is comprised of working professionals who volunteer to review packets
• Your packet is reviewed by three members
• It is a peer review process evaluating your training, experience, and contributions to the profession
• If your packet is incomplete, you are provided the opportunity to fill in the gap, and we assign you a point of contact to facilitate completing your credential

What do I Need to do?
• Experience – Two years in an emergency services job or related field (1 year with a BS degree) ~ Volunteer time (Red Cross, CAP, etc) COUNTS
• Document response to a major incident, disaster, or participate in a multi-agency full-scale exercise
• Two references who can talk to your qualifications
• Completion of a “Basic Training” course leading to initial certification in your job (Fire Rookie School, Basic Law Enforcement Training, EMT Course, etc)
