Dear Parishioners,
I find it interesting, coming back as I have just
done, from a traditionally Catholic country, to note that in
Ireland, and in many European Countries, Catholic
believers now find themselves in the position of being a
“creative minority” in a traditionally Catholic society,
that has now become totally secular and sometimes anti-
Catholic. Many Catholic thinkers in Europe now are
reasoning that this “creative minority” can make up for
the decline in numbers of the Church in Europe with a
smaller group of more committed members. In fact,
many people see this role as more in concert with the
original role of the Church in society.
Present and past history teaches us that a too close
alignment of politics and religion in society leads to all
kinds of excesses and abuses, and ultimately, is not
good for either religion or society.
The important issue for us here in the USA, is to
recognize that in our “Super-Size” mentality what is
important is not the numbers and the size of the
“membership”, but the quality of faith of the members.
As we begin the implementation of Faith in Our Future,
and begin the collaboration process with the 4 shore
parishes in our Cohort, our goal should not be to create
“mega-churches” after the model that we sometimes see
on television on Sunday mornings.
As I look around our own parish families, I am impressed
by the quality and depth of faith that I see amongst those
who make the choice to actively participate in the life of
the parish. I am impressed by the level of respect and
reverence that I see in our children and young people, and
in the sense of ownership and commitment that I see in
the adults of our parishes. But even though by some
standards, we are relatively, and blessedly, a moderately
large parish, we are a small microcosm of the wider
Church throughout the world. We too have our loosely
affiliated majority, and our creative minority -
people with a strong and indomitable faith and
commitment that you know will survive any challenge
and any vicissitude that life can bring.
The goal for all of us is to become a part of that
minority in our parish community, but also more
especially in the larger community and society.
Our goal is to be the leaven in our communities that
nourishes and fosters the spirit and the values of the
Gospel in our communities. These are the values of
mutual respect and care and concern for the weak and
the vulnerable, the poor and the dispossessed

Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty
O God Our Creator,
Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit,
you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world,
bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel
to every corner of society.
We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty.
Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened;
give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church
and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith
Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters
gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation,
so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome-
for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us-
this great land will always be "one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen

their own parishes. The bride, the groom, or their parents must be registered and
living in this Parish for at least one year. Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter

designed to help couples learn more about themselves and their unique relationship. Please call 732-449-5765, ext. 134.
