THE SAILING FOUNDATION

PROMOTING SAILING IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST FOR OVER 35 YEARS

1970s

• Formed in 1971 to campaign Intrepid in the America’s Cup as “The People’s Boat”

• Key founders: Joe Williams, Gary Horder, Sunny Vynne, Walt Little and Doug Fryer

1970s - more

• Intrepid made it to the last round of eliminations for the defense of the Cup in 1974.

• Proceeds from the sale of Intrepid provided initial funding for the Sailing Foundation.

Our Purpose

• To promote sailing education and excellence

• To introduce more people to the sport

• To assist in training and competition at all levels

• To maintain safety at sea

After the Cup, started first major training program in Port

Townsend in the late 1970s

• Bought 9 Thistles

• Housed in Port Townsend

• Hosted 1980 Youth Nationals

The Sailing Foundation Helps with Travel Stipends

…from the 1980s, when we supported the Adams Cup team…

…and the 470 Women’s team to Korea…

…to 2006, when we:

• Helped winning PNW HS teams travel to national regattas

• Helped UW team travel to national regattas

• Helped Olympic hopefuls in Korea

Safety at Sea always a priority with The Sailing Foundation

• From the beginning, we have stressed safety

• Formed subcommittees in early 1980s and researched safety issues

• First major study – crew overboard recovery

Developed the Lifesling

• Years of research/testing

• 1000s of donated hours

• Developed major results

• Designed and tested Lifesling

• Obtained US patent #4599073 in 1986

• Licensed production; major player – West Marine

• The Sailing Foundation felt sailing benefits all, not just the privileged

• Focused on High School sailing programs, and some collegiate programs

• Funded all or part of start-up teams in many locales

Support The Sailing FoundationIt’s the right thing to do!

• We’re a 501(c)(3) organization

• Supported entirely through your membership fees and donations

Your past support has brought many recent successes:

• Safety at Sea seminar February, 2006

• WIND Clinics for training in the Gorge

• New boats for high school sailors

• Transportation grants for teams to travel

• Training support for new instructors

Your future support will help us expand on recent successes and

add:

• Coaching assistance for major regattas

• More travel assistance for teams attending out of area regattas

• Develop research and new products for safety at sea, and new curriculum for Safety at Sea seminars

So, as you consider your support, remember:

From early dreams…

…to team building…

…to far away regattas in New England…

…and Annapolis…

…individual growth through new encounters…

…exciting advancement…

To continue the development of more and better sailors in our

area…

And to continue the development of a safer

environment for our sailors…
