The Scroll Sleepovers and the Spirit From Pastor Sarah
It’s 5:00 pm, and the confirmation students start arriving at
St. Luke. They look a bit tired, and they’re not all thrilled to
be here. It’s quiet and everyone is looking at their phone.
Enthusiastic adults are trying to engage minimally
responsive preteens.
It’s midnight, and the whole group is playing a wild game of
sardines, a game when one person hides while everyone else tries to find them.
Kitchen cabinets, the recycling bin, the dark sanctuary, behind adults – all
become genius hiding places. The whole building is filled with laughter and
energy… minus the adults who look ready for bed.
Something happened between arriving and midnight. I can’t say how, (Continued on page 2)

Did you notice something different on Sunday when the
offering plates were presented? Yes, Pastor Danny accepted the
offerings instead of the acolytes and placed them on the Alter
emphasizing “Giving to God”.
The Congregation Council will be starting the budget process in August this year.
In October, the Purpose Team and Support Team leaders will present their planned
activities for 2019 so you will know what is being planned. This presentation is an
opportunity for you to support, add to or question some of these activities. After this
event, the Teams will prepare a budget to achieve the agreed on mission goals and

what or when, but I think it was the work
of the Holy Spirit. The youth started
enjoying each other and having fun. The
church building, which is normally an adult
-centered space, became this playground
at night. The Spirit might have been
facilitated by a lot of junk food and sugar,
but the transformation was awesome.
This year we weren’t able to go to
Camp Calumet for confirmation camp. The
series of winter snow storms and school
cancelations kept some of the nearby
schools in session during the time we
were planning to be at camp. So instead
we had a lock-in at the church. It was so
successful that I think this will have to be a
tradition in addition to Confirmation Camp
at Calumet.
Thank you to all the adults who
made the weekend come together. For
parents and families who prioritized
getting their students here amidst
graduations, sports, and all the events
that happen this busy time of year. Our
teachers, Justin Aleshire, Ruth Chambers,
Ken Chambers, Steve Johnson, Mark
Larson, Pam Suplicki, and Shawn
Willingham; our overnight volunteers,
Brad Dame, Beth Hundley, Gina Williams,
and Brad Roe; our meal coordinator,
Heather Colletti; lock-in fun expert, Jen
Roe, and the pastors all worked together
to make it a great weekend for our youth.
Here are a few pictures from our
weekend!

How Many Hungry Can We Feed This Year? By Bill Kracke, Outreach Ministry Team Lead
September 29th is a full 3 months away and it is time to start thinking about our annual Outreach Meal Assembly Event. Our last two events each provided over 42,000 meals to the hungry of the New London area and last year we sent about 8500 meals to the hurricane-impacted areas in Florida and Puerto Rico. Within New London County, we have supported Food Banks/Pantries/Lockers in Preston, Ledyard, Norwich, Groton, New London, East Lyme and Three Rivers Community College. This support was both monetary support as well as volunteer time
in assembling the meals. I believe that most of our volunteers will tell you that participation in the Meal Assembly event was a lot of fun and that they are looking forward to doing it again. But the real critical and necessary support comes from donations (and matching corporate gifts when available) to pay for the raw materials. Over the last two years, the Outreach Ministry budget has provided about 50% of the funds for the event (not counting the pizza), with the rest coming from donations. This year the Outreach Ministry budget is unable to provide any funds for the event, but all is not lost. We have about $2700 total in credit left over from last year at the Outreach Program and the Meal Assembly Fund at St. Luke. Accordingly, we are initially planning for a smaller event this year equal to about
20,000 meals but even this smaller event will still require at least $2300 in donations. HOWEVER, the Outreach Program is very flexible and if we were to get about the same donations that we received last year, we could easily bring the event to a 30,000 meal level or more. So the real question is “How many meals do we want to provide to the hungry of New London County?”
A quote from Pastor Danny's 20 June midweek update:
“People give money for all sorts of reasons, but the good news of biblical stewardship is that
we are encouraged to give out of glad and generous hearts, motivated by sincere love for God. If we give out of a sense of compulsion (motivated by guilt or shame) or out of self-interest (to win praise or gain influence), there is a good chance that we will end up feeling used. We may think that our generosity has not been fully appreciated or we may wonder whether the money we gave has been put to the best possible use. But giving that is grounded in the good news of biblical stewardship never leaves us with those hollow feelings. When we give cheerfully, as an act of worship, the very act of giving moves us to lose interest in ourselves and to devote ourselves
to God. We may appreciate our gifts having our gifts acknowledged, but that isn't why we give them.”
I have personally talked to many of the people who are running the food banks/pantries/lockers in our area and have heard about how much they appreciate our food donations and how much their clients like the food that we provide. I have already contacted most of them and the numbers one and two choices for meals are Mac & Cheese and Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal with Tomato Basil Pasta a close third. The Outreach Program
will let us choose to do one type of meal for every 10,000 meals funded, so if we can reach 20,000 meals we
can do both Mac & Cheese and Oatmeal. Get to 30,000 meals and we can add the Tomato Basil Pasta.
I sincerely hope that you will
consider giving “cheerfully “with
“glad and generous hearts” to help
reduce hunger in New London
County. We will have information
available in the Narthex in early
July on how to make donations,
especially if the donations qualify
for matching donations from your
employer or bank/credit union. I
sincerely thank you for your past
support and hope that you will be
as generous or more this year.
“...we are encouraged to give out of
glad and generous hearts, motivated
by sincere love for God”

Painting Supplies for the Youth Mission Trip Paint rollers, brushes, tray
liners, painters tape and drop clothes are all welcomed donations. These
are all supplies that need replenishing from year to year. Drop these off at
Pastor Sarah’s office by Sunday, July 22.
Water Gear and Blue Ribbon for Vacation Bible School The theme of
Vacation Bible School this year is Rolling River Rampage. We need a variety
of blue ribbons in any size to turn St. David’s sanctuary into a rolling river. In
addition, water gear like tubes, oars, rafts, life jackets etc., will help
transform the space. These items can be returned to you after Vacation
Bible School, if they are well labeled. They will only be used for decorative
purposes, so they don’t need to be in water-worthy condition. Drop off
items to Pastor Sarah’s office by Sunday, August 5th. Vacation Bible School
runs August 13-17.

Council Notes (cont’d.)
Here at the pantry we continue to be thankful for our community and its giving spirit. We had a successful Postal Workers' Food Drive in May. The food donation from this event have helped us to keep our shelves stocked for our guests.
We have been busy accepting donations on a regular basis. One day we had as many donations as we had guests. Just as we were saying "Gosh, we could use ______________," that item was donated within minutes. That does happen somewhat regularly.
This month the pantry could really use the following items. With cookouts and picnics happening in these warm months, we thought that our guests would enjoy food for those times.
If you enjoy certain foods at a
picnic and they are not on the list, please feel free to donate them.
You can drop off donations at the pantry on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings from 9-11am and Thursday evenings from 4-6pm. There are also new beautiful, sturdy collection boxes at Holmbergs, Village Market, Holdridges, Gales Ferry Landing, Town Hall, Parkes Place and the Ledyard Senior Center.
Just as a reminder: if shopping is not your 'thing' consider doing the shopping by using Amazon or Walmart. For more information concerning that option, look on the Food Pantry's Facebook Page.

continued support, The Ledyard Food Pantry

Please come take a look at St Luke’s
community garden. A lot has been done over the
last few weeks! All the plants raised by the Ledyard
Vo-Ag high school students are in and growing. We
have planted squash, tomatoes, beans, turnips,
Swiss chard, beets, and peppers. Herbs and flowers
in the surrounding “bee friendly” garden are
gradually blooming, although continuous weeding
is always needed. Eelgrass mulch has been placed
along the pathways where we have beans, turnips,
and Swiss chard. When the plants are bigger, this
mulch will be moved around the plants, to control
the weeds and hold in the moisture. All raised beds
inside and behind the garden are now on the
programmed watering system. Organic Neemoil
spraying was done to deter the insects from
munching on the plants. The most noticeable
addition is our newly constructed squash arbor
made from donated wood and orange snow fencing purchased
at the tag sale for $5. When the green butternut squash leaves
grow up the orange fence it will make for a very colorful picture.
All the vegetables and herbs grown in the garden will be
placed on the altar each Sunday before some are given to
congregational members in need of fresh food and most are
given to the New London Meal Center. Fresh locally grown food
is important to these folks who rarely get nutritious meals. If you
would like to join the small group tending the garden – to learn
how to grow your own food or hone your horticultural skills –
there are always many tasks, large and small for beginners or
experts, that could use additional hands to help.

Chikumbuso Project
Prayer List Thank you to the
St. Luke community for helping these two extraor-dinary young men move one step closer to achiev-ing their dreams. As many of you know, in February of 2017, Aaron & Teddy arrived in the United States from Zambia, Africa where they were attend-ing school thanks to the support of the Chikumbuso Women & Orphans Project. Even though neither of them attended any school until they were ages 8 & 10, they quickly learned Eng-lish and became excellent students. Because of their success and perseverance, they were chosen to come to the United States for one year of high school. It be-came clear that these young men were extremely motivated and wanted to contin-ue their education. Due to a government regulation on student visas, they were not able to attend Wheeler High School for more than one year, so they finished their senior year at St. Bernard High School. They graduated from St. Bernard last month and received an honorary diploma from Wheeler High School on 21 June at their graduation ceremony. Teddy & Aaron have been accepted at Three Rivers Community College and will begin there this fall after a one month visit home to see their families. Attending college here in the USA is certainly a dream for these young men and it has been made possible by people like you at St. Luke who have supported them and prayed for them weekly. The saying is true, “It takes a village to raise a child!” Thank you for your support and prayers which will continue to be needed as Teddy & Aaron pursue their dreams!
If you would like to add a prayer
request, please call the office at
860-464-7897.
Thank you from Teddy & Aaron
