The Spire The Monthly FUMC Newsletter March 2018
Dear Friend,
Last month, I wrote about the beginning of Lent. This month, let's look at the end of Lent. This forty dayseason concludes with an emotional rollercoaster called Holy Week. This week is filled with lots of imagesand events which are intended to inspire and challenge us. Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday, commemorating Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. He was met with thewaving of palm branches and shouts of "Hosanna" which is a Hebrew exclamation loosely translated as"Save us." We continue to celebrate Palm Sunday with the waving of palm branches in our worship. Later that week, we come to Maundy Thursday. The word Maundy derives from the Latin word "mandatum"which means "mandate." It commemorates Jesus' mandate to the disciples that they love one another (John13:34). In the modern church, Maundy Thursday is the day we commemorate Jesus' last meal with hisdisciples, the sacrament we know as holy communion. Thus, communion is typically celebrated at thisservice. Also on Maundy Thursday, we remember Jesus' act of hospitality as he washed his disciple's feet. In somechurches they will include a time for footwashing as part of the worship service. On Thursday night we also remember Jesus' prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. In remembrance of thatevent, we include a prayer vigil here at First UMC that goes from the conclusion of the Maundy Thursdayservice to the beginning of the Good Friday service. Good Friday commemorates the events up to and including the death of the cross. We remember the arrestand trial, the betrayal and the agonizing hours spent on the cross. In some cultures there will be aprocession of the cross through the city streets, making their way silently to the church. One might ask whysuch a day commemorating death is called "good." The term good refers to God's ability to take the saddestof events and fashion something good out of it. Other cultures refer to the day as Mourning Friday or "StillerFreitag" (Silent Friday) or in some Nordic countries it is "The Long Friday." In some churches, there is a service that begins around sundown on Saturday and continues until midnight. This is called "The Easter Vigil." It is a time to retell the stories of holy week, recall the grief and sadness. Atmidnight, lights are turned out, silence comes over the church and a single candle is brought into thesanctuary, symbolizing the resurrection. From that single candle, worshippers will light their own candles,
bathing the sanctuary in the candlelight. This becomes a time of great celebration and joy, oftenaccompanied by fireworks. When the Easter Vigil is not celebrated, the second option is a sunrise service commemorating Mary's trip tothe empty tomb and her encounter with the risen Jesus. All of these events and services are designed to deepen the experiences of the holy week and prepare usfor the joy of Easter morning. Pace bene (peace and all good things),Howard

Men and Women of FaithRoom 124On Sunday, February 25, the Men and Women of Faith began a 5 weekLenten study by Max Lucado: "He Chose the Nails." Sue Paris willcontinuing leading this study for the four Sundays in March.
Every gift from God reveals his love, but no gift reveals his love more thanthe gifts of the cross. The hill of the cross is rich with the gifts of God'sgrace. These were gifts he didn't have to give. The only required act for oursalvation was the shedding of blood, yet God did so much more. So, as weunwrap these gifts, we need to pause and listen for his voice. As we do,perhaps we will hear him whisper, "I did it just for you." (He Chose the Nails,2016)
Digging into the BibleRoom 116Digging into the Bible began a 6 week study "The Prodigal God" on Sunday,February 25. This study will continue during the month of March. "TheProdigal Son" examines the parable of the prodigal sun with emphasis onthe elder and younger Sons, as well as, their earthly father. All are welcometo join us in room 116.

HELP! HELP! HELP!
As you can see by our increasing number of Fridays@First concerts, wereally need your help. Getting the word out about our events is crucial tomake sure that we reach a broad section of the Columbus community whomight attend. We advertise in the Go Section of The Republic but a lot ofpeople don't read the paper anymore in this digital age. We spread the wordon Facebook and on our church website but we still need to reach morepeople. Interest in performing for our Fridays@First concerts is growing andin April, we will be hosting a concert with pianist Jooyoung Kim, from theClassic Alive Artists management organization. In September, we will behosting a brass quintet from Munich, Germany and in December we willbring back the popular duo The Burchfield Brothers. This is on top of ourmany concerts featuring local artists and young people from our community.
Do you have ideas about how we can promote these events? Would you bewilling to take posters to businesses around the community? Would youshare these events with your friends on Facebook. Twitter, Instagram andthe like? If so, please talk to Kevin Butler and share with him your ideas andwillingness to help.
Fridays@First is an outreach ministry to our community and we hope tobring many new people into our church through these musical programs. Weneed your help to make it a success and to see it continue to grow.
