“FOR YEARS I LITERALLY DREAMED DURING THE NIGHT THAT FINALLY I WOULD HAVE
THE PERFECT SOUND SYSTEM – WITHOUT ANY COMPROMISE.”
– PETER LYNGDORF
EVER SINCE RECEIVING HIS FIRSTTAPE RECORDER AT AGE 11,Peter Lyngdorf has been fascinated with the reproduction of music. So it
comes as no surprise that over the past 30 years he has led some of the
most significant audio breakthroughs the world has ever seen and heard.
Among them, the first venture into digital amplification and room
adaptation technologies, now perfected in the realization of his vision:
the Steinway & Sons Model D Music System.
“We’ve found our kindred spirit in an uncompromising commitment to excellence in sound reproduction.”
- Bruce Stevens, President and Chief Executive Officer of Steinway & Sons
The collaboration between Steinway & Sons, renowned for creating the world’s finest pianos, and Peter Lyngdorf, Europe’s
preeminent developer of high-performance digital music systems, achieves an unprecedented pairing in the world of sound
innovation. Both are famed for their painstaking commitment to design excellence, outstanding craftsmanship, and
unparalleled performance. It is through this visionary collaboration that the Model D Music System has been perfected.
A VISIONARY PARTNERSHIP.
The Steinway & Sons Model D Music System is the first of its kind to employ fully digital amplification with advanced RoomPerfect™
adaptation technology. As a completely integrated music system, all components are carefully selected and designed from the outset to
complement each other perfectly. No cost or effort has been spared. Every detail, every part has been chosen to offer the best technical
performance and long-term reliability.
UNCOMPROMISING IN EVERY RESPECT.
Each Model D Music System, painstakingly crafted through more than 170 hours of precision machining, takes
approximately eight weeks to assemble by hand. The sleek and contemporary design offers the same distinctive
Steinway & Sons lacquer found on the world’s best pianos. Even the integrated CD player, driven by industrial grade
servomotors, bears the stamp of proprietary innovation. This meticulous attention to detail ensures that every
Model D Music System lives up to the exceptional standards of Steinway Lyngdorf.
CRAFTSMANSHIP BEYOND COMPARE.
The distinctive volume wheel is in itself emblematic of the Steinway Lyngdorf brand. Luminous and sensuous to the
touch, the wheel is crafted from 1 kg of gold-plated brass, mounted on precision-machined Swiss bearings.
It provides total control over the digital amplification technology that is mastered in the Steinway & Sons
Model D Music System. The volume wheel controls the power supplied to the amplifiers, but does not shape the
audio signal itself. This allows for full digital resolution, even at low playback levels. The forward-facing readout
displays the playback volume on a relative decibel scale.
ENTERING THE DIGITAL DOMAIN.
The most overlooked factor in modern music reproduction is the influence
of the listening room. The performance of any loudspeaker is highly
dependent on both the acoustical properties of the room and on the
placement of the speakers. In fact, acoustic room interactions account for
more than 50% of the sound quality that reaches the listener.
Rather than adapt the room to the music system, Steinway Lyngdorf adapts
the music system to the room. Years of research have resulted in
RoomPerfect™ – a proprietary technology capable of making the first
fully three-dimensional map of a room’s sound field. The RoomPerfect™
correction system then overcomes the influence of the room to guarantee
a uniform, neutral tonal balance throughout the entire listening space.
Furthermore, it allows the owner the freedom to locate the
loudspeakers where they look best. The pending RoomPerfect™ patent
represents one of the most comprehensive ever filed in the history of
acoustics, with more than 50 claims for new technology.
YOU SEE A ROOM. WE SEE A SOUND FIELD.
The Steinway & Sons Model D Music System employs sleek open-baffle loudspeakers that radiate sound forward and back. The result is uniform
sound distribution without any additional bass buildup along the room’s perimeters and vastly reduced spillover to adjacent rooms. Eliminating
the loudspeaker enclosure means that air is not compressed inside, allowing the speakers to react with speed and precision. The potential loss
of low frequency output, resulting from the open-baffle speaker, is pre-corrected by the digital signal processor built into the system.
The core of the loudspeaker baffle is milled out of solid blocks of aluminum, offering unequaled long-term mechanical stability under the most
extreme environmental conditions. In addition, the solid aluminum baffle is inert and holds the loudspeaker drivers absolutely still, so only the
driver cones move, and not the speaker baffle itself. The result is more accurate and dynamic musical reproduction because the loudspeaker
starts and stops precisely when the musical signal demands it.
PERFECT SOUND QUALITY, AT EVERY POINT.
The Model D Music System is fully digital from the onset of signal input up
to the loudspeakers’ drivers. On its journey, the signal remains
entirely in the digital domain, thereby eliminating the distortion common to
analog amplifiers. The superior fully digital amplification of the System
offers a number of other advantages over conventional technologies,
including an inherent noise level at the theoretical lower limit and very low
power consumption. Because the amplifier is extraordinarily efficient,
it does not get hot, so the electronics last longer, and less heat dissipates
into the listening room.
The signal is transported from the head unit to the loudspeakers through a
proprietary digital link based on industry standard CAT.5E cabling.
The digital link allows for the flexibility of over 100 meters/300 feet
distance between the speakers and the head unit without any loss of quality.
SUPERIOR SIGNAL, FROM START TO FINISH.
“THE REASON WE CAN ACHIEVE SUCH AMAZING RESULTS
IS THAT WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO RETHINK EVERYTHING.
EVERYTHING.”
– PETER LYNGDORF
Every Model D Music System is positioned and voiced by a certified
Steinway Lyngdorf installer. Custom calibration is achieved via
RoomPerfect™ technology. Once perfectly voiced, sound is distributed
evenly, wrapping itself into every corner of the room for an unparalleled
listening experience. Operating the System itself is elegantly simple – just
insert a CD in the tray and press “Play.”
The Steinway & Sons Model D Music System can be easily integrated into
home automation systems, interfacing with most common analog and
digital sources such as tuners, DVD players, TVs, and music and video
servers. The two-channel Model D Music System can easily function as the
front audio system in a powerful home theater setup.

TOTAL CONTROL AT YOUR FINGERTIPS.
The beautiful remote control – a perfect balance of form and function – replicates the experience of the head
unit’s iconic volume wheel. The gold and glass finish radiates sophistication, while its ergonomic and intuitive
design provides command of the Model D Music System from the comfort of your preferred listening position.

Steinway Lyngdorf recognizes the importance of personal style. To ensure the Model D Music System complements your home
decor, bespoke versions can be customized in a broad range of veneers and colors. In addition, new finishes can also be applied
to the standard b ack lacquer version on the occasion of room redecoration or system relocation.

With Steinway Lyngdorf’s ongoing commitment to research and technological advancement, keeping your
Model D Music System up-to-date with the latest innovations is a matter of a simple upgrade that can be
easily performed in your home. As part of this future-proof offering, the current two-channel System will
be upgradable to the multi-channel version.
Furthermore, the intelligent modular construction allows for easy repair or replacement of any surface in
case of accidental damage. This will allow your Model D Music System to stay in pristine condition for
many years to come.
