andprotection.In2017wereachedover265,000people,including102,000children,acrossthecountry.I’mproudofthisachievement,butIalsorealisethatit’sonlyasmallcontributiontoamassive,complexsituation–theLebanonCrisisResponsePlanaimstohelpover2.8millionvulner-ablepeople,including1.5millionSyrianrefugees,nearly300,000Palestinianrefugees,and1millionofthepoorestLebanese.ThismeansnearlyhalfthepopulationlivinginLebanonisinneedofsupport.
Whilethosenumbersaredaunting,Iknowthatbywork-inginpartnershipwiththeGovernmentofLebanon,withinternationaldonors,withnationalcivilsociety,andwithlocalcommunities,wecanmakeadifference.WemustcontinuetosupportfamiliesaffectedbythiscrisisuntilthewarinSyriaisover,andthecountrybeginstorecover,rebuild,andbecomeasafeplaceforchildrenonceagain.OnlywhenSyriaistrulysafeforchildren–whentheycannotonlysurvive,butcanalsogrow,developandthrivethere–onlythenwillthiscrisisfinallycometoanend.AndonlywhenI,asaparent,wouldsendmyownchildtoSyria,onlythenwillIfeelthatitissafeforanychild.
MycareerwithSavetheChildrenhasspannedfourcoun-tries–Indonesia,Pakistan,ThailandandnowLebanon– andover10years.Butitwasonlyin2017thatSavetheChildren’svisionandmissionreallyhithomeformebecauseI,too,becameaparent.WhenmysonwasborninFebruary,Ifinallystartedtounderstandthedepthofloveonefeelsforourchildren,andmypassionforhelpingallchildrenthrivedoubled.
Asaparent,aswellastheCountryDirectorforSavetheChildren,itbreaksmyhearttoknowthathundredsofthousandsoffamiliesinLebanon–Syrian,Palestinian,andvulnerableLebanese–arestrugglingtoprovidehealthyfoodfortheirchildren,toensuretheyhaveasafeplacetolive,andtosendthemtoschool.Survival,protection,andeducationarethemostbasicofchildren’srights,yetsomanyfamiliesarefacedwithimpossiblechoices:Should I send my 10-year-old to work so I can pay off our debt? Should I have my 15-year-old daughter marry so we have one less mouth to feed? Should my eldest child stay home so the young-est can go to school?
Noparentshouldbeforcedtomakesuchchoices.
Recognisingthis,SavetheChildrenisworkingtohelpfam-iliesthroughoutLebanonviaholisticprogrammesthatad-dressfamilies’needsforshelter,cleanwater,andlivelihoodopportunities,alongwithchildren’srightstoeducation

ABOUTSAVE THE CHILDREN SavetheChildrenhasbeentransforminglivesinLebanonsince 1953,usingrights-basedapproachestoincreasechil-dren’saccesstoquality educationandallowthemgreaterparticipation at family, schoolandcommunitylevels.
SavetheChildrenLebanonCountryOffice,throughthree regional field offices,deliverscomprehensiveinterventionsthattargetchildrenacrossallcommunities.
Withapproximately1.5 million Syrian refugeescurrentlylivinginLebanon,basicneedshavebecomehardertomeetandfulfillingchildren’srightshasbecomechallenging.Coor-dinationwithGovernmentbodies,theUNandotherhumani-tarianagencieshashelpedchannelSavetheChildren’seffortstoreachthemostvulnerable,wherevertheyare.
EffortstosupportrefugeepopulationshavecoincidedwithincreasedattentiondedicatedtoequallyvulnerableLebanesefamilies.
SavetheChildrenworkstohelptheGovernmentofLebanontoimprove systems and infrastructureandincreasethechanceforchildrentoliveinasafe and prosperous environment.

When: December2017Where: Riyak,theBekaaValleyWhat happened: 147familiesreceivednoticestovacateaninformalsettlementaroundtheRayakAirbaseforsecurityreasons.
Save the Children’s response: Asfamilieslefttheirtentsinsearchforaplacetolive,SavetheChildren’steams,incollaborationwiththeMinistryofSocialAffairsandhumanitarianpartners,workedaroundtheholidayseason’shourstolocateanewsiteandpreparethegroundforfamiliesandchildren.TwodaysintotheNewYear,66familieswerehelpedtoresettle,asanewroadwaspavedandfoundationlaid.Childrenwholostschoolingasaresultwerereferredtonearbyschoolsandservices.Precautionsagainstfireandemergencieswerealsotakenintoconsiderationasthenewstructuresweredesigned.

Save the Children’s response: Anassessmentwascarriedouttoensurethatfamiliesmovingouthavemanagedtofindanalternativeplace.Amediastatementwasreleasedtohighlightchildren’srighttosafetyandwarnedagainstabruptmovesthatcouldputtheirphysicalandpsychologicalwell-beingatrisk.WorkingcloselywiththeNorwegianRefugeeCouncil,SavetheChildrenreferredcasesforlegalassistance.

Save the Children’s response: Hoursafterthefirehadbeenputout,SavetheChildren’sShelterteam,withsupportfromUNHCR,steppedintoremovethedebrisandoverhaulthesite.Overthenextsevendays,tirelesseffortshelpedrebuildnewunitsandrestoreasenseofnormalcyafterthedisaster.

Unlikemanysecondshiftrefugeeschools,theKayanyschooloffersanofficialcertificateofgraduationforthosewhocompleteYear9,havingbeenlicensedtoteachtheLebanesecurriculum.
OUT OF SCHOOL CHILDREN
Lebanonhasmadegiantstridesingettingmorechildrenintoschool.Inadditiontoprovidingfreeeducationatpublicschools,theMinistryofEducationandHigherEducationopened376secondshiftsforSyriarefugeechildrentoattendintheafternoon.However,accordingtotheLebanonCrisisResponsePlanupdate,thereareoveramillionchildrenofallbackgroundsinneedofeducationassistance.Ofthose,nearly50percentremainoutofschoolduetoanumberofbarriersthatincludeabsenceoftransportmethods,languagedifficultiesandchildlabour.
Totargetthisvulnerablegroup,SavetheChildrensetupBasicLiteracyandNumeracy(BLN)classeswhereanychild,ofanyage,whoisyettolearnhowtoreadandwritecancomeandstartfromscratch.EstablishedatprivateschoolsandcommunitycentresinBeirut,MtLebanon,theNorthandtheSouth,theclassesranforfivehoursaday.ChildrenlearnedfromtextbooksdevelopedtoresembletheLebaneseofficialcurriculum.SavetheChildrenapproachesboostchildren’smoraleandconfidence,particularlyforthose
whohavemissedoutonyearsofschoolandfindthemselveslearningtheletterswithclassmateshalftheirage.

OUR SERVICESInLebanon,acountryofjustundersixmillion,1.5millionLebaneselivebelowthepovertylineof$3.84aday.Ofthose,470,000arechildren.AmongSyrianandPalestinianrefugees,povertyaffects76percentand65percentofbothpopulationsrespectively(LCRP2018update).Morethan50percentofschool-agechildrenareoutofschoolwhilefoodinsecurityremainscriticallyhighasincomeearningopportunitiescontinuetoshrink.
Childrenareatthecentreofeverythingwedo.Wecontinuetoreaffirmourdutytoserveallvulnerablecommunitiesandchildren,wherevertheyare.
I. EDUCATIONTheConventionontheRightsoftheChildmakeseducationthekeytochildren’sdevelopmentthroughallstagesofchildhood.Article28demandsthatprimaryeducationbemadecompulsoryandavailablefreetoall.Italsostipulatesthatmeasuresshouldbetakentoencourageregularattendanceatschoolandreducedrop-outrates.Withthatdynamicinmind,weaddressedtheeducationalneedofchildreninLebanon.
GIRLS’ EDUCATIONGirlsaremoreatriskofremainingoutofschool.Manygirlsattendingafternoonshiftsdon’tfeelsafereturninghomeinthedark,whileothersareforcedtomarrybeforetheyhavereachedtheir18thbirthday.Facedwiththesechallenges,educationoftenends.
SupportedbySavetheChildren,attheKayanyFoun-dationschoolinBekaa,refugeegirlsareempoweredtomakethebestoftheirfutures.TheycometolearntheLebanesecurriculumandacquirelifeskills.Theschoolopenedamorningshifttoencouragegirlstoenrol.
Jana,ofYear9,toldthatsheandherfriends‘’areheretofightforourfuture.”Thisfightcomeswithacademicarmour.Upto150girlslearnaboutarangeofsub-jects,converseinEnglish,andaretrainedincomputerskills.Positivethinking,asJanasaid,istheonlywaytogoaboutit.

EARLy CHILDHOOD CAREAND DEVELOPMENT
Successatschoolhingesontheeducationreceivedoutsideofit.Thefirstyearsofachild’slifewilldecidehowsteadytheirdevelopmentisoncetheyjoinschool.
OfficialfiguresinLebanonshowthatonly31percentofschoolsinLebanonprovideEarlyChildhoodEducation.Tobridgethegap,SavetheChildrenincreasedthescale,scopeandfocusofitsnon-formaleducation,prioritisingEarlyChildhoodCareandDevelopment(ECCD)programmessochildrencangetthebeststarttolife.
Inspacesornamentedwithcolourfulpaintingsandshapes,childrenbetween3-6yearsenjoythesafety,friendlinessandinclusivenessofthelearningatmosphere.Theactivitieshelpchildreninteracttogetheranddevelop.Theyarepreparedtomakethetransitiontothefirstyearatschoolassmoothaspossible.
Atover20ECCDcentres,openedinBekaa,NorthLebanon,BeirutandMountLebanon,childrenlearnthelettersandnumbersandtakepartinarangeofexercisesthatdeveloptheirmotorskillsaswellastheirlinguisticandcognitiveskills.Theactivitiesaredeliveredusingdifferentapproaches,includingEmergentLiteracyandMath(ELM)andHealingandEducationthroughtheArts(HEART),whichhelpchildrensharetheirfeelingsthroughartisticexpression.
More than 4,000 children took part in our ECCD classes

HOMEWORK SUPPORT GROUPS
Notallchildrenhaveachancetogotoschool.Forsomechildren,thereisnobustotakethemtoschool,othersfindittoodifficulttolearninFrench.Suchhurdles,whichoftensoundtrivial,shattermanyadream.
In2017,wemadesurethatthosedreamswerenotshort-lived.Withsupportfromlocalcommunitiesandvolunteers,weopenedHomeworkSupportGroupclassesthathadoneprimarytarget:makingsurethatchildrenremainedatschool.
Deliveredbyqualifiedteachers,theclasseshelpedbridgethegaps.Fortwohourseveryday,childrenarrivedtoreadFrenchpassages,solveequationsandprepareforexams.Remie,whoattendedourclassesinNorthLebanon,said,“Frenchisdifficultforus.Sotheyhelpusdothehomeworkandprepareforthenextday.”
WORKING WITH PARENTS
Itallstartswiththefamily.In2017andacrossourEducationactivities,wemadesurethatparentsandguardianswereengagedatalllevelstoaddresslearning,protectionanddevelopmentneedsofchildrenatriskofdroppingoutofschool.
ParentCommunityGroupswereestablishedtopromotepositiveparentingapproachesamongthoseprovidingcareathome.
Theaimwastofosterasafeenvironmentathomeandsupportchildrentocontinuetheireducation.Thathappenedthroughhighlightingthelong-termbenefitsofapplyinggentleguidanceasopposedtopunishmentwhileraisingachild.

II. CHILDPROTECTION
Violence,childmarriageandchildlabourremainamongtheworstviolationsofchildrightsinLebanon,sokeepingchildrensafefromabuse,violence,exploitationandneglectisattheheartofourmission.
AccordingtotheLebanonCrisisResponsePlan,theuseofviolentdisciplineathomeiswidespreadamong57percentofLebanesefamiliesand65percentofSyrianrefugees.Meanwhile,childrencontinuetotaketothestreetsandfarmstohelpearnanincomefortheirfamilies,leavingthemexposedtoviolenceandexploitationintheirfighttowinbread.
Girls,ofallcategories,areatriskofbeingmarriedoffhalfadecadeearlierthantheyarephysicallyoremotionallyready.Earlymarriageisoftenaresultofattemptstoreducetheeconomicburdenonthefamily’sshoulderandhopestoprotecttheirgirl’sfuture.Datashowsthatthephenomenonisnotexclusivetoonecategoryofpeople,althoughitisfarmorewidespreadamongSyrianrefugeecommunities,where27percentofgirlsagedbetween15and19arecurrentlyinunion.
Overthecourseofthepastyear,ourprogrammessharpedfocusonthosetrendsandsteppedupthefightforeverychildhood.Werolledoutnewplanstosupportchildrenindividuallyandthroughcommunities.
Childrenengagedintheworstformsofchildlabourwerehelpedtoimprovetheirconditions,reducelongworkinghoursandrejoinschools.ThosewhowerethesolebreadwinnersinthefamilyweresupportedthroughcashpackagesaswellasCaseManagement.
Ourcommunitybasedpsychosocialsupportprogrammeshelpedchildrenbuildlong-termresilience.
ThroughfocusedPsychosocialSupportinterventions,delivereddirectlyandthroughpartners,wetargetedchildrenwhoneededemotionalsupporttoovercomedistressandtraumasanddiscusstheirfeelings.Childrenwerewelcomedatourspacesacrossthecountryaswellasthroughmobileandcommunity-basedapproaches.
CaregiversandparentswerealsoengagedinsupportgroupsandparentingprogrammeswhichaimedtoprovidepsychosocialsupportaswelladdressissuesofphysicalandhumiliatingpunishmentwhichcontinuetobeaconcerninLebanon.Awareness-raisingsessionsreachedouttocommunitiestowarnofthemanyrisks
associatedwithchildmarriage,particularlywhendecisionsaretakenbasedonfinancialnecessities.
Dana,apotentialchildbrideoftheageof16,toldherparentsthatshedidn’twanttogetmarriedafterhearingoneofherneighbourstalkinoneofthesessionsofthephysicalandemotionalcomplicationsshehadtocontendwithfollowingherprematureunionwithaman10yearshersenior.
Inordertosupportthechildprotectionsysteminthecountry,webuiltthecapacityoflocalactorsoncasemanagement.Communitybasedchildprotectionworkcontinuestobekeyinourapproachtobridgelocalandnationalsystems.
Thiswasdonebyengagingindividuals,civilsocietyaswellaslocallevelgovernmentinstitutionssuchasMunicipalitiesandSocialDevelopmentCentres.
NATIONAL EFFORTS
SavetheChildrenwasselectedtoleadtheInterimCareAssessmentwhichlookedintoresidentialcareinstitutionsprovidinginterimandalternativecareforchildrenwhoareatriskofchildprotectionviolations.Thankstothecooperationfromotherinstitutions,thefindingsoftheassessmentrepresentthefirststeptoprovideevidenceforfutureadvocacyworkandsupportprogrammes,lookingatappropriatecareforchildreninLebanonincollaborationwithMinistryofSocialAffairs.Theultimateaimistosupportqualityalternativecaremeasuresandgivechildrenachancetoliveinasafefamilyenvironment.
Inthemeantime,SavetheChildrencontinuedtobeakeycasemanagementactor,andthroughitsrelationshipswithcommunitiesandotheractorswasabletoidentifyandreceivereferralsforthemosthigh-riskcases.Theseactivitiesweretailoredtosupportunaccompaniedandseparatedchildren(UASC)includingcommunity-basedcareworkandspecificsupporttohostfamiliesofUASC.

A. FOOD SECURITy ANDLIVELIHOODS
PovertyinLebanonisrampant.TheLebanonCrisisResponsePlansaysthat,amongnearly4.5millionLebanese,1.5millionpeoplearelivingbelowthepovertyline,ofwhomathirdarechildren.Theratesarehigher,andjustasconcerning,amongrefugeepopulations.Upto65percentofPalestinianrefugeesand89percentofSyrianrefugeesarelivingonlessthanUSD3.84aday.
FoodSecurityandLivelihoods(FSL)fallsinlinewithSavetheChildren’scommitmenttoliftingfamiliesoutofpovertysotheycanbettersupporttheirchildrentosurvive,learnandbeprotected.In2017,weworkedtoimprovelivelihoodsandensurepeoplehadstableandincreasedaccesstonewopportunities.

CASH FOR WORK
Short-termemploymentwasprovidedtovulnerableLebaneseandSyrianwomenandmenthroughacashforworkscheme,throughtheconstructionandoverhaulof16communityassets.Theseassetssupportedrurallivelihoods,contributedtodisasterriskreduction,andimprovedcommunityhygieneandsanitationfacilities.Up to314women inBekaaandNorthLebanonwerealso supported tobuild their skills toproduce food itemsaspartof theHome-BasedSkillsDevelopmentproject,whichequipped the ladieswiththeefficienttechniquesofhealthyandhygienicproduction,entrepreneurshipandmarketing.Manywomen,likeHamidaandherfriends,wentontoformteamsandselltheirproductsonline.“Itmadeusfeelproductive.Wehavestartedourownbrandandhopetoextendourclientele.”

B. SHELTER
ShelterprogrammesinLebanonaredesignedtoimproveprotectionandresilienceofSyrianrefugeesandhostcommunitiesandrespondtotheacuteneedsthroughvariousinterventions.Thefocusistoensurethecrisis-affectedpopulationcanmeettheirbasicshelterneedsandarenotforcedtorelyonnegativecopingstrategies,inadditiontostrengtheningsocialcohesion.
VITAL REHABILITATION WORKS
During2017,theshelterteamsinBekaa,MountLebanon,BeirutandNorthLebanonprovidedhumanitarianassistanceto87,378uniqueindividuals,including51,120 childrenlivinginhostcommunitiesandininformaltentedsettlements.Thiswasachievedthroughshelterrehabilitationinterventions,whichsawtheconversionoframshacklestructuresandtentsintoinhabitableunits,andminorrepairsthatprovidedimportantfixesthatprotectedfamiliesandallowedmoreprivacy.
Hoda*,whosethreechildrensleptinarooflesscottageformonths,bracedherselffora“winterlikeneverbefore,”asthefamilyspentalongdustysummer.Therehabintervention-windowsanddoorsinstalledandatinceilingconnected-securedthesimplefoundationthatthefamilyhadbeensearchingfour.“Tobeabletoclosethedoororturntheheatingonjusttofeelalittlebitofwarmthisasimplepleasureweneverthoughtwewouldenjoy.”
EFFICIENT TACTICS
Becauseurgentneedscannotwait,weshiftedourformofsheltersupporttowardsefficientcash-basedmethods.Cashtransferprogramminghasthepotentialtoallowvulnerablecommunitiestorespondquicklytourgentneeds,offeringdignity,flexibilityandchoicetobeneficiarieswhilesupportingLebanon’ssmallandlargemarkets.Usingsmartcardsandcashtransfers,familiesgainedindependencetomaketheirownjudgementonwhattheyneedmost.Themoveallowedthemtoturnfromreceiverstodecision-makers.
In2017,wetrialledacashforweatherproofinginitiative,withanaimtotestthesuccessofdeliveringweatherproofingas-sistancethroughcashassistance,thusensuringandincreasingsustainability,decreasingcosts,andcreatingasaferworkingenvironmentforourshelterstaff.Thetrialassisted310familieslivingininformalsettlementswhere96%ofthetotalbeneficia-rypopulationreportedusingthefullamounttobuytheweath-erproofingkititemsthatmadetheirsheltersmoreresistanttoharshweatherconditions.
FIGHTING FLAMES
In2017,fatalblazesengulfedbuildings,residentialsheltersandinformalsettlements.Thealarmingincreaseinthefrequencyandimpactoffireoutbreaksmadeourresponseevermorecritical.
Upto14deathswererecordedasaresultoffireincidentsin2017.Sadly,12victimswerechildren,including11undertheageoffive.Althoughthereasonsvaried,electricalhazardsandwrongburningandcookingpracticesbecamemorecommon.AfireignitedbyacookstoveengulfedaninformalsettlementinQabElias,theBekaaValley,killingonepersonandleaving100familiesstranded.
SavetheChildrenisaleaderinfirepreventionandresponseprogrammesinLebanon.LeadingonthedevelopmentofaNationalFirePrevention,PreparednessandResponseGuideline,weworkedtomitigatetheriskoffireandcarryoutswiftfiresafetyinterventionstoreducetherisksthatcouldleadtotragicconsequences.Weintroducednewpracticalfirefightingitemstovulnerablehostandrefugeecommunities,whileourteamsdeliveredtrainingtoensureunderstandingofhowtopreventandreacttofires.In2017,wesupportedmorethan29,000childrenandtheirfami-liesinInformalSettlement,residentialandnon-residentialbuildingswithfirepreventionequipmentandfiremitigationawarenesssessions.
C. WATER SANITATIONAND HyGIENE
Itisalong-standingmysterythat,foracountrylikeLebanon,richofgroundwater,springsandrivers,watershortageremainsachronicproblemforthousands,eveninareaswithabundanceofrainfall.
Lackofwaterresourcesdoesn’tonlymeanlesssupplyforhouseholds.Itcanleadtothespreadofwater-borndiseases.Forimpoverishedcommunitiesthatcan’taffordtobuytruckedwater,thereistheriskofcompromisingpersonalhygienehabits.
In2017,werespondedtointricatewaterscarcityandhy-gienechallengesthatchildrenfacedinBekaaandNorthvillages.Oursupportcamethroughprovidinghygieneandwaterqualityawarenesssessionsforbeneficiaries,solidwastemanagementathouseholdandcommunitylevelandconstructionofwaterinfrastructureprojectstoenhancewaterqualityandwaterservicesinthoseareas.
OVERHAULING THE INFRASTRUCTURE SySTEM
Weembarkedonsevenlarge-scaleinfrastructureproj-ectsthatwillcontinuetorunin2018.InNorth
Lebanon,a1000-squaremetrewaterreservoirwasconstructedtosupplythevillageofBerkayel,whichfordecadesreliedonbottledandtruckedwater.MajdalanditsneighbourKherbetDaoudwillalsobenefitfroma500-squaremetrereservoirandan8-kilometrewaternetworkrespectively.Debbabieh,neartheSyrianborder,willalsoenjoyfreshwatersupplythroughanewinstal-lation.
MeanwhileincentralBekaa,asolarsystemtogeneratepowerandincreasethevolumeofpumpedwaterwasintroducedinQabElias,atownofdenseLebaneseandSyrianpopulations(around65,000),whileinKfarZabad,some20kilometrestotheeast,webrokegroundforanewwaterwelltosupply20,000peoplewithsafewater.AlRafid,westernBekaa,wasalsoreachedwithaninfra-structure.
Ihab,fathertoeight-monthJana,said,“havingfreshwatersupplementhelpsususethemoneywithwhichwebuytruckedwatertobuymilkandclothesforourchild.WeworryaboutSaturdaysbecauseit’sthetimewhenwehavetochoosebetweenbuyingwaterorgettingotheressentialsforthebaby.”
PROMOTING BEST PRACTICES
Fosteringa cultureofwater conservationwas part andparcel of ourWater SanitationandHygieneapproach.Ourteamsengagedschoolchildrenandcommunitymembersinconversationsaboutthebestpracticestouse,treatandappreciatewater.Community-basedawarenesscampaignssoughttoexplaintheimportanceofwastemanagementstartingatfamilylevel.Onamunicipallevel,wecooperatedwithlocalplayerstoassistenvironmentally-friendlypractices,suchassorting,andspreadtheknowledgeonthehealthrisksthattheongoingwastecrisisposed.

Afterdaysofpreparations,agroupofninechildrenrepresentingLebanon,SyriaandPalestinetooktothepodiumtodiscussthreemainissues:childparticipation,educationandchildprotection.Theyhighlightedthesufferingofworkingchildrenandthosewhomissoutonschoolandsharedalistofrecommendationsthatthechildrenoftheiragewouldliketoseehappening.
Thosechildrenarenowreadytoparticipateinthedecision-makingprocess,havingdevelopedsufficientknowledgeableaboutthechildparticipationstandards.Thisenablesthemtoadvocateagainstexploitativeapproachesandprojects.
TheconferencewasorganisedincollaborationwiththeSwedishForeignMinistryandtheSwedishAmbassadorforChildrenandArmedConflict,Gufranal-Nadaf.ItwasattendedbytheLebaneseministersof
defenceandsocialaffairsandrepresentativesfromtheministriesofeducation,socialaffairs,justiceandlabour,aswellasstakeholdersfromUNagencies,theEU,internationalNGOs.Theeventwascoveredacrossarangeoflocalandregionalmediaoutlets.
Meanwhile,underprojecttargetingcivilsocietyorganisations,SavetheChildren’spartnersinAlgeria,NADANetwork,andLebanon,Nabaa,draftedareportfocusingonchildrightswithchildparticipation.OurpartnersinYemen,SOULandDS,conductedawarenessraisingsessionsonchildrightsandchildprotectionfor3,000childrenand3,000familiesandcommunitymembersaffectedbythewarinYemen.
Ontheotherhand,awareness-raisingactivitiesonchildrightsandchildparticipationtargetingchildrenandcaregiverswererolledoutinBeirut,MountLebanonaswellasBabal-TabbanehinTripoli.AmanualwasdevelopedandstaffatSavetheChildrenandotherorganisationswheretrainedinordertodeliverthesessions.
Amappingofchildrightscommitteesalsocommencedinordertoestablishacomprehensiveoverviewofwhattypeofcommitteesareworkingonchildrenrightsissues.Theaimofthismappingwasalsotoassessthecapacitiesofthesecommitteestoruncapacity-buildingactivitiesincludingtrainingsandprovideadvicewithregardtothecapacitygapsandwhatisneededtomoveforwardwiththeimplementationoftheUNConventionontheRightsoftheChildinlocalcommunities.
IV. CHILD RIGHTSGOVERNANCE
ChildRightsGovernanceisaboutmonitoringchildrights,advocatingforbettergovernanceofthoserights,andempoweringchildrentomaketheirvoicesheard.In2017,childrenwereabletotaketheirstruggle,demandsandhopestothenation,withanationalMyVoiceMattersTooeventthatbroughttogetheranarrayofinfluencersanddecision-makersrepresentinggovernments,developmentagenciesandhumanrightsorganisations.
GENDER EQUALITy
GenderequalityhasalongwaytogoinLebanon,andthat’swhy,foryears,ithasbeencentraltoourprogramming.
ThroughourcurrentUNWomen-fundedproject,SavetheChildrenprovidesnineCommunity-BasedOrganisationswiththesupportneededtoworkongenderequality,ensuringboysandmen’sengagementinpartnershipwithgirlsandwomen.Inadditiontothesub-grant,weofferedtechnicalknowledgeandmentoringthatinspiredaclearvisionforourpartners.Inordertomakethissupportavailableandconsistent,SavetheChildrenproposedstrategiesandapproachesthatincludedseveralcomponentstoensurethattheprojectwasontrackandtodirectthisinvestmentandefforttowardsrealisinggenderequalityinLebanon.Thesestrategiesinclude:

THEIR EDUCATION,OUR FUTUREFutures in the face of uncertainty
TherearejustovertwomillionchildreninLebanon.Ofthose,astaggering20percentareoutofeducation.Thenumbers,sovastandworrisome,oftengounnoticed.
Expectedly,theproportionsarehigheramongSyrianrefugees.Foreverychildwhojoinsschool,thereisonestillwaiting.InspiteofthelaudableeffortsoftheLebanesegovernment,representedbytheMinistryofEducationandHigherEducation,moremustbedonetoensureallchildreninLebanoncanaccessqualityeducation.

On12September2017,SavetheChildren’sEveryLastChildcampaignwasofficiallylaunchedinLebanon,underthenameTheirEducation,OurFuture.Asthenamesuggests,thecampaignhighlightstheimportanceofeducationinthemakingofthefutureofoursocieties.Thecampaigncallsforvulnerablechildrentoaccessthebasicrighttoeducationwithoutanystringsattached.
Aone-minutelaunchvideoviewedbyhundredsofthousandsandsharedacrossmediaoutletsputthestrugglewithouteducationintoperspective.Thevideodepictsthestarkimageofneglectthatleaveschildrendeprivedoftheirrighttoeducation.Theclipfollowsin60secondsthedifferentstagesofparallellivesledbyanachievinggirlontheonehandandanout-of-schoolchildwhoendsuponthestreetonthe
other.Thelaunchvideowasfollowedbypersonalanecdotesfromsixteenchildrenandadultswhosharedtheirhopesandspokeoutabouthurdlesthatstopchildrenfromacquiringtheirfundamentalright.
Thecampaignidentifiedasetofavoidablebarriersthatstopchildrenfromgoingtoschool,includinglackofsufficientspaces,lackoftransportmethods,demandingcurriculum,languagedifficulties,overwhelmingpaperwork,bullyingandviolence,andlackofvalidresidencyforrefugeechildren.
#TheirEducation_OurFuturesawhighlevelofengagementonmediachannels.Inthethreemonthsthatfollowedthelaunch,thecampaign’scontentreached5.1millionusersinLebanonandtheregiononFacebook.ChildrentooktoTVchannelstosharetheirstorieswiththewiderworld.
Thecampaignwillcontinuethroughout2018tohighlightthateducationisarightforeverychild.Tokeepabreastofourcampaignactivities,followusonFacebook,InstagramandTwitter.

Anotherinnovativefeatureforthesystemwasintroducedinlate2017.AreferralapplicationforsmartphoneswasdevelopedbytheMonitoring,Evaluation,AccountabilityandLearningUnit(MEAL)tohelpstaffshareurgentcasesdirectlyfromoperationzones.Theultimateaimistoenhancethequalityofserviceandensurethefastestpossibleresponse.
