The Whole dharma Sphere in a Grain of Sand - Some Musings on the Role of dhāraṇī in the Formation of East Asian Buddhism

This meeting is the third in a series of conferences on questions of the circulation of

knowledge in Korea and beyond. The aim of these conferences, as well as of the

cooperation with FU Berlin of which they are part, is to look at the exchanges and

ensuing transformations of items of knowledge (especially when these exchanges

take place across perceived „cultural“ or „national“ borders), as well as at cultural

and epistemic changes that may result from these processes. The present

conference focusses on the secondary transformations of knowledge that

accompany or ensue after the initial transferral, i.e. cognitive and communicative

processes through which new knowledge and its carriers are related to or integrated

into existing (canons of) knowledge. The tools and mechanisms of dealing with

new knowledge may include interpretive adaptation, dissection, selection and re-

assemblage, reduction and amplification, as well as blending with existing

cognitive structures.

Thematically, the conference deals with a wide range of fields of knowledge,

ranging from the literary and religious to the technical and scientific domain.

Contributions are united methodologically, however, by keeping an eye not only on

the message but also the medium: the nature of the carrier of knowledge (its genre

or its material form) may well predispose the ways in which knowledge is re-

configured and exerts formative powers on its new context. Therefore,

presentations dealing with the textual tradition in a wide variety of genres are

complemented by papers approaching the issue from the perspective of material

objects (ritual utensils, mechanical tools, weapons, etc.) as both objects and carriers

of knowledge.

STRÄTLINGSHOF DIRECTIONS

Take the U35 towards Bochum Querenburg (Hustadt) from Bochum Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) and get off at the stop »Ruhr-Universität«. After exiting the Ruhr Universität station, turn right and walk about 300m across the pedestrian bridge until you face the library (UB). Proceed to the left of the library and go down the stairs. Pass the Audimax on the left. Once you reach the students cantine (Mensa) descend the outside stairs down to the last floor. Follow the signs leading you either to the Beckmanns Hof or directly to the conference venue (red arrow).

The directions to and from the Strätlingshof will be handed out at the reception desk. However, there will be a shuttle service to and from the hotel.

RUHR UNIVERSITY BECKMANNS HOF

The design of the RUB Internationales Begegnungszentrum (IBZ International Meeting Place) represents a successfull attempt of putting a several hundred year old farm building to a new use. Secluded but still close to the university‘s concrete buildings visitors are invited to come together with their hosts in a idyllic atmosphere. The preservation of the old structures and the harmonic integration of new elements characteriz the place which is located right next to the botanical garden.

STRÄTLINGSHOF

Being one of the oldest buildings in Bochum, the history of todays Strätlingshof reaches back to 1831, when it was rebuild after a devastating fire in the manner of a so called Low Saxon house. While it has been under preservation order, the building was restored in 1991 and put to new use as a restaurant and event center in 1996.
