JALALABAD/NEW DELHI,Mar 2:

In the fourth attack since2007, heavily-armed terrorists,including suicide bombers,today struck the IndianConsulate in Afghanistan'sJalalabad city, killing nine per-sons including an Afghan secu-rity personnel and causing dam-age to the chancery.

External Affairs Ministry inNew Delhi said all Indians in themission were safe and six terror-ists, who carried out the attack,were dead. While two terroristsblew themselves up, four mili-tants were killed by the AfghanNational Police.

"Indian Consulate inJalalabad has been attacked. AllIndians in the mission are safebut one ANP officer was killedduring the gunfire.

"One suicide bomber blewhimself up in front of the mis-sion while another blew himselfup along with the car which car-ried the attackers. Four terroristswere killed by the Afghan secu-ritymen," MEA SpokespersonVikas Swarup said in NewDelhi.

He also said that theConsulate was damaged in theattack. The ministry hasreceived an initial report of theattack and subsequent develop-ments by the Afghan Army.

Eight civilians have beenkilled in the crossfire, the Indiansecurity sources said based on

primary reports from the attacksite. They said there were asmany as 1,320 explosionsincluding bomb and grenadeblasts during a nearly two-hourgunbattle.

The initial onslaught wascountered by the Indo-TibetanBorder Police (ITBP) which waslater joined by the Afghan secu-ritymen.

According to ProvincialPolice Chief Fazel AhmadShirzad, one suicide bomberdetonated his explosives nearthe front gate of the Consulateto open the way for otherattackers.

"Four other attackers werekilled after half an hour clasheswith the security forces," he wasquoted as saying by the TOLOnews.

Today's attack is fourth inthe series of terror strikes on theIndian Consulate in Jalalabad. Itwas attacked twice by handgrenades in 2007 and in 2013, itwas attacked by three suicidebombers. In 2015, an attack on itwas thwarted by the Afghansecurity forces.

Two months ago, heavily-armed terrorists carried out anattack on the Indian mission inMazar-e-Sharif which lasted forover 25 hours with all the attack-ers who attempted to storm thebuilding getting killed by theAfghan forces.

Soon after that also inJanuary, Islamic State jihadistsclaimed responsibility for adeadly gun and bomb siege tar-geting the nearby Pakistani con-sulate in Jalalabad. (PTI)

Rahul Gandhi today launcheda scathing attack on PrimeMinister Narendra Modi and hisGovernment over the "fair andlovely" scheme on blackmoneyand the raging trouble in JNU andHyderabad University.

In acerbic remarks on Modi'sstyle of functioning, theCongress Vice Presidentaccused him of not listening toanyone's opinion including thatof his ministers and MPs.

"You have been taught by yourteachers in the RSS that there isone truth in the universe--yourown and nobody else's opinionmatters," he told the treasurybenches while speaking on themotion of thanks to the President'saddress in the Lok Sabha.

"The Prime Minister cannot

run the country with his opinionalone. The country is not PMand PM is not the country," hesaid in a 40-minute speech dur-ing which Modi was absent.

Attacking the scheme onblackmoney announced in thebudget on Monday, Gandhi said,"Nobody who has blackmoneywill be jailed under Modi's 'Fairand Lovely' scheme. All thosewho have blackmoney can makeit white under this scheme."

Recalling Modi's promise ofputting people with blackmoneybehind bars, the Congress leadersaid the Government had insteadcome up with a way to help suchpeople.

He was referring to the one-time four-month compliance win-dow announced by FinanceMinister Arun Jaitley under whichpeople with domestic blackmoney

can come clean by paying 45 percent tax and penalty and getimmunity from prosecution.

Gandhi was sharply criticalof the Government over the tur-moil in Delhi's JNU and main-tained that student leaderKanhaiya Kumar, who has beencharged with sedition, had notuttered a single word against thelaw but was behind bars whilethe "real culprits" were roamingfree.

Questioning Modi's silenceover the JNU episode, Gandhisaid that he had not uttered a sin-gle word when teachers and themedia were attacked in thePatiala House court complex inthe capital when Kumar wasbrought there for a hearing."Which religion teaches toassault teachers," he asked.

Gandhi said that 60 per centof students in JNU belonged todalits, minorities and OBCs. 40per cent of them came from apoor background.

"Why are you after the JNU?Because dalits and adivasisstudy there and you don't wantthem to grow. But we will not letthis happen. We cannot crush theJNU," he asserted in the courseof his speech interrupted by theruling NDA members.

Referring to the suicide ofdalit scholar Rohith Vemula inthe Hyderabad CentralUniversity, Gandhi said that theprime minister had not botheredto call his mother.(PTI)

Rahul attacks PM on blackmoney scheme, JNU row 9 dead in attack on Indian mission

18 addl BSF companies deployed on IBNEW DELHI, Mar 2:

Border Security Force (BSF)has recently deployed 18 addi-tional companies along theIndia-Pakistan InternationalBorder in Punjab, theParliament was today informed.

"A request was received inAugust 2015 from the DeputyChief Minister of Punjab regard-ing increase in deployment ofBSF in Gurdaspur sector.

"Recently, BSF hasdeployed 18 additional compa-nies on International Border inPunjab," Minister of State forHome Kiren Rijiju said in awritten reply in Rajya Sabha.

One BSF company has astrength of about 100 personnel.

In a separate reply on the samesubject, the Minister said BSF hastaken various measures to checkinfiltration along this border.

"Installing laser walls is one ofthe integrated measures taken byBSF. The laser technology devel-oped by BSF has been designed tocover all the shortcomings experi-enced in the use of laser wall atvarious places in the past.

"The present technology hasbeen found working satisfactori-ly to cover the un-fenced river-ine stretches," he said. (PTI)
