DESCRIPTION

Generation Of Electricity From Tidal Power Tidal power is the power inherent in tides at sea or oceans, that is the power of motion of water actuated by tides. As a replacement to traditional fossil fuels, tidal power can make a significant contribution on a local and regional scale to the power grid of several countries.

What is Tidal power?

2

Tide and its phenomena 3Tide is periodic rise and fall of water level of the sea.How is tide caused?

Uses of Tidal Power

Necessary conditions for a tidal power plant 5

• Tidal range

• Free from wave attack of sea

• Excessive sediment load should not be present

Tidal Power Technology 10

• Tidal energy technologies can be subdivided into three

categories: A. Tidal Range technology

B. Tidal Current Technology

C. Hybrid Forms Of Technology

A. Tidal Range Technology 11

• Tidal range technologies harvest the potential energy created by the difference in height between ebb tide and flood tide.

• The first tidal barrage was completed in the Rance River in north-western France (Brittany) in 1966

A. Tidal Range Technology 12

B. Tidal Current Technology 13

• Tidal current or tidal stream technologies convert the kinetic energy into useable energy.

• Technology developments are comparable to the development of wind turbines.

Turbines of Various Companies 16

C. Hybrid Forms Of Technology 17

• Hybrid forms of tidal energy can be found in the form of multi-purpose platforms where both tidal current and tidal range technologies are used for electricity generation.

• These platforms are in an early developmental and innovative stage.

• A recent development called “dynamic tidal power” (DTP) is planned for 8 GW plant in China.

Latest Trends in Different Places 18

• Tidal range energy has already been commercially applied since the late 1960s in Canada, China and France, and most recently in South Korea.

• At least 25 countries are involved in developing tidal power.

• Total of 150MW of wave and tidal current stream capacity is forecast to be installed between 2011-2015.

• Tidal current seems to most developed technology based on number of projects and suppliers.

Tidal power installations in India 19

• Atlantis Resources Corporation is now pursuing a 250MW project in the Gulf of Kutch with Gujarat Power Corporation Limited (GPCL).

• Initial optimisation studies indicate that 1MW AR1000 turbines will be installed.

• The Ministry sanctioned project for setting up a 3.75 MW demonstration tidal power plant at Durgaduani Creek in Sunderbans, West Bengal to the West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency (WBREDA), Kolkata. The National Hydro Power Corporation Ltd. (NHPC) is executing the project.

Advantages and Disadvantages 21

Advantages:It is a renewable and sustainable energy source. It produces no pollution. It does not depend upon fossil fuel.It is predictable and reliable.

Disadvantages: 22Presently costly, very expensive to build and maintain. The tidal fences can create difficulty for the migrating fish.Technology is not fully developed.

Conclusion 23

• The evolution of tidal energy from a primitive means of grinding grain, to a power station generating over 8,000 megawatts is fascinating.

• Today it is sufficient to say that in most parts of World electricity is almost a basic human need.

• In the future we look to renewable energy for a means of providing us with energy, as well as not damaging the air and water that we need for survival.

• Tidal energy can offer this, but only if we are willing to pay the price for a clean environment.
