We don't use the word "minutes" with 5, 10, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55. It's five past three. But! 1:11 It's eleven minutes past one.

The short hand shows the hours.

The long hand shows the minutes.

It's (a) quarter to five.

It's ten to eight.

Latin - ante meridiem = before noon

p.m.

Latin - post meridiem = after noon

Eg. I get up at 8 o'clock a.m.
