Timelines & MilestonesA practical approach

• Terminology• Use of milestones

Determine quarterly progress/success

Determine funding renewal

Steps to the completion of the school goals

Show quarterly results of the grant

Differences between timeline and milestones

“Everyone must realize the importance of pulling together the timeline and the milestones.”

Timeline – What will happen when in the big picture

Milestones – Quarterly effects of the timeline pieces

Example: Scheduling PD/Utilization & effects of PD

• Immediately incorporate milestones into the School Improvement Plan (could use some action and implementation steps and monitoring steps into milestones if a good SIP is in place)

This could be an LEA milestone

“MUSTS”

• All participants must realize that these monies must impact teaching strategies, instruction, and student learning -----rather quickly

• Realize that a school cannot wait 3 years to show improvements, but must show evidence of improvement each year – incremental changes

Starting with the end in mind

• Overall 3-year plan with goals and timeline

• Plan broken down into year 1, year 2, year 3

• Each year broken down into quarters

• Milestones needed for each quarter

• Calls for knowledge of schools goals for student improvement

Grant Organizer

• What is a grant organizer?

• Where do we find it?

• Why do we need it?

• Could districts use this as a milestone?

A deeper meaning of milestone

• Utilization and results of extra personnel, professional development, student interventions,

• Use of formal and informal assessments to show results

• Use of the data from these assessments

• Next steps

Grant Facilitator/Monitor

• Scheduled for quarterly milestone visits

• Progress reflected in milestone visit form

• Look at current quarterly milestones and previously unresolved milestones

• Progress indicated – evidence needed

• Milestones determined MET (evidence needed) or NOT MET

EVIDENCE

• Presentation of documentation

• Evidence file

• Incorporation into School Improvement Plan that is monitored and studied throughout the school year is some of the best evidence

Addenda Changes

– Changes in an addendum or in a budget often call for changes in milestones.
