CARRIED "HONESTY" TOO FAR

Trusted Clerk Rather Overd id I t , and Lost the Confidence of His

E m p l o y e r .

No W a y f o r Ladies to Act. Scene, a crowded res tauran t ; dra

matis personae, the proprietor, sleek, prosperous, pompous; a doorman—a dejected at tendant, rolling anxious, furtive eyes in every direction to find out whether a customer had skipped without cashing in his meal check properly. For a few moments, however, attendant relaxes, heavy eyes almost close and vigilance abates.

On this peaceful lassitude falls the voice of the proprietor. "Here, you, Joe, get on your job. Didn't you notice them two ladies over there beating it out without paying their bill?"—Reho-both Sunday-Herald.

Cash registers became an institution as a means of compelling honesty among employees handling money. There was a rime when their installation was taken as an affront by every clerk concerned, but a new generation has accepted them as a matter of •ourtse. That they still have their use in the original sense, however, was demonstrated recently by one employer —a grocer—who was telling his story over the counter the other evening to a belated customer.

"Last summer," the grocer said, "my family was living down at the beach and I used to leave early in, order to get down there for a late dinner. 1 had a clerk that I trusted to lock up and put the money in the safe. Naturally the cash register would show in the morning what he had rung up.

"For a few days I thought it was working fine. He was a good clerk and I thought he was honest. Then when I got to thinking about it I decided he was too—honest. For ten days that register and the cash agreed to a penny. Now that ' s better than I could make it do myself. It ain't natural.

"Then I decided to try a little scheme. Just before I left I rang up $2.75 on the register and put nothing in the till. Next morning the cash and the register agreed as usual. That was enough for me. Any man who is so honest he will make up mistakes out of his pocket must have plenty of money to do it with.

"No, he isn't working for me now."— New York Evening Sun.

Ammonia by New Process. An enterprising American has se

cured from the Italian, government a concession for the utilization of 800 horsepower of the Marmore cascades near Terni, about seventy miles from Rome, and maintains tha t he can turn out nitrogenous plant food for the Italian farmer at a cost as low as 1 lira per kilo (equivalent to $0,088 per pound, with the lira taken a t its par exchange value of $0,193). It is said that the falls are capaMe of generating not less than 150,000 *>^sepower.

These are the cascades over which Byron waxed so eloquent in "Ohilde Harold's Pilgrimage." Alfred P. Dennis, commercial a t tache of the United States embassy in Rome, reports to the department of commerce that the only ingredients in the ammonia are water, ?.ir and electric energy.
