Teaching Time:

Building on yesterday’s learning you are looking at adding two 2-digit numbers today. However todayyou will need to exchange. We exchange any time we have a number higher than 9 in a place value column. For example, 10 or higher is not allowed in the ones column. To understand this concept, the column addition has been broken into extra steps than yesterday.

Extra Challenge 1:

Create as many addition calculations as you can think of that require an exchange of ones for a ten and result in a total that is less than 100 and has a 3 in the ones column.

An example has been provided.

An example has been provided.

Multiple solutions up to 47 + 46 = 93 (or similar).

Extra Challenge 2 Answers:

How many ways can you find to complete the addition calculation below?

It could be 26 + 29 27 + 28, 28 + 27, or 29 + 26.

The ones digit are all number bonds to 15, the amount required to be added to 2 lots of 2 tens making 4 tens (or forty) to make 55.

To be able to add two 2-digit numbers (with exchange)

Evaluation:

Do you agree?Explain your answer.

It is just as easy to add 11 + 19 as it is to

add 17 + 13.

To be able to add two 2-digit numbers (with exchange)

Evaluation:

It is easy to add two lots of 1 ten together – making 2 tens or twenty. Then, we should recognise that the pairs of digits in the ones columns in both number sentences are number bonds to ten, which means both exchange to form a third ten, making a total of 30 in both instances.

It is just as easy to add 11 + 19 as it is to

add 17 + 13.

To be able to add two 2-digit numbers (no exchange)

Success criteria:

✓ I can add tens and ones to combine two 2-digit numbers (with exchanging)

✓ I can explain my reasoning when adding tens and ones to combine two 2-digit numbers (with exchanging)
