CMS or Hard Coded Website Before delving into types of CMS & which type of CMS we want, it is important to know whether you need a CMS or not.

WordpressWordpress which was released in 2003 is a free & open

sourced CMS based on PHP & My SQL.

Wordpress is mainly used for Blog, corporate websites.

More than 60 million websites use Wordpress.

Its latest version is 4.4 Clifford which is mainly focused on mobile experience, better passwords & improved customizer.

Drupal Drupal was released in 2001. It is a free & open sourced

CMS based on PHP.

More than 1 million websites run on Drupal.

It is used mainly on Government, corporate, knowledge management based websites.

New Drupal version 8.0.0 was released in November 2015, which focuses on improved mobile support.

JoomlaLike Wordpress & Drupal, Joomla is also a free open sourced

CMS. Released in 2005, Joomla is written in PHP.

It is the second most used CMS after Wordpress.

Latest version 3.4 was released in October 2015 & focuses primarily on increasing security and reducing vulnerabilities.

Joomla is considered to be midplace between Wordpress & Drupal.

It is considered good for E-commerce websites.

Magento

Magento is an open sourced CMS which is mainly used for E-Commerce websites.

Magento was released in 2008, is completely owned by Ebay and is written in PHP.

It is considered to be the best E-commerce platforms.

Magento as a CMS platform isn’t as strong as Wordpress, Joomla & Drupal.

It was mainly used for blogs & it has advantages as far as content creation is concerned.

E-commerce is not available on Wordpress. So, an add on woo-commerce is used for that.

It is only suitable for small e-commerce websites.

Joomla as E-Commerce platform

Joomla has become popular for setting up small & medium size E-commerce websites.

E-commerce is not available on Joomla. You need extensions to build e-commerce platform on Joomla.

Relatively little costs for maintenance & development.

Installation isn’t that difficult as compared to Magento.

Magento as E-Commerce platform

It is suitable for large & complicated e-commerce websites.. It has options like social media login.

Extensive shipping options & filtering products in categories.

Offers multiple payment options

High security

Difficult to set up & costly

Joomla SEO settings

By default, Joomla disallows images to be indexed. We have to remove the “Disallow: /images/” from robots.txt file.

By default Joomla set page title to Heading 2. We can go to global settings, hide the page title & then add H1 in content.

By default, URL rewrite function is disabled in Joomla. First we have to rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess After that in global settings, we have to enable URL rewriting.

Magento SEO settings First thing we have to change the default title, description

& keywords.

We should remove category URL suffix which is by default html.

To avoid duplicate content issues, we should not use category paths for product URLs.

Canonical link meta tags for product & categories should be set Yes. Also, enable category URL rewrites.
