Her Famous Poems: The Lotus Savitri Laxaman Our Casuarina Tree Christmas

The Lotus: The Lotus is Sonnet Lily and Rose had been fighting for the title “Queen of Flower” “The lily and the rose, long long had beem Rival for that high honour bards of power” Her poems have most an Indian theme and Indian background Lotus is a flower of significance both to Indian and the Hindu religion. In this poem Toru present the idea that the Indian lotus is the most beautiful of all flowers.

Savitri: The most popular poem of the volume is Savitri. The story of Savitri is borrowed from the Mahabharata. It presents the immortal legend of Satyavan’s death and his wife Savitri’s success in getting back his soul from Yama, the god of death. This poem contain five parts and each parts telling about the life of Savitri. This poem deals with the theme of Indian myth.

Our Casuarina Tree: An autobiographical poem. The poem underlines the importance of memories in human life. The tree brings to her mind the memories of time when she used to play under it with her brother and sister. Toru had lost her brother and sister and she has put her memories in this poem and expresses her feeling in this poem: “ O sweet companions, loved with love intense, For your sakes shall the tree be ever dear !”
