Initial considerations

What should we be looking for?

Initial considerations

If we do accept/retain this business...

Will we have to pay out in the future?

Potential for loss (the risks)

Quality of control measures

So, what do we look for?

Let’s carry out a typical site visit!!!

On arrival to site

What are our initial impressions?

What are the first things we look for?

Types of evidence

OBSERVATIONS

• Workplace conditions

• Activities/behaviour

• First impressions count!

• What should we look for on arrival?

INTERVIEWS/DISCUSSIONS

• Attitudes/culture

• Knowledge/competencies

• Commitment

• How can we initially assess these?

DOCUMENTATION

• Look at in more detail…..

The documentation review

What should be in place?

Safety management system‘Successful Health and Safety Management’ (HS(G) 65)

Health and safety policy

It should contain:

•Health and safety policy statement.

•Management organisation/responsibilities.

•Arrangements for implementing health and safety.

Is statement signed and dated by Senior person?

Is document relevant to company?

Does it set realistic goals and targets?

Are they achievable/measurable?

Are roles and responsibilities defined?

Are suitable and sufficient adequate arrangements in place?

Is document readily available and communicated to all?

Organisation and responsibilities

Is there a clear management structure?

Monitoring systems

REACTIVE:

Ill health recorded/monitored?

Investigation procedures/training?

Investigation reports/follow up procedures?

Claims defence procedure?

Review/audit procedures

Is documentation up to date?

Are review procedures in place?

System for keeping up to date?

External audits and follow up actions?

Enforcement and claims history

Accreditations and awards

Benchmarking with similar organisations

The site inspection –What do we see?

“The Good the Bad and the Ugly!”

What do we like to see?

“The Good!”

Good level of information available to all

Good housekeeping and walking routes

Good external traffic routes and one- way system

We like clever ideas!

Another good idea!…can you spot it?!!!

What we don’t like to see

“The Bad!”

Trailing Cables

Poor Housekeeping

We definitely don’t like to see ‘dodgy’ contractors on site!

Heat, Heights, Holes!

“The Ugly!”

Heat

Heights

Heights – how do they clean those windows?!!

Heights - Amazing what you see from a hotel window!!!

Holes

Occupational Hygiene

Dust
