Dramatic shifts in technology are changing the way we live. We shop and bank digitally, we use apps on our phones to get into movies and to board airplanes and many of us can work from almost anywhere in the world.
But some technologies – such as artificial intelligence (AI) – are challenging the notion that only humans can perform functions in some professions. We already have robotics and AI systems helping us in operating rooms and clinics, and the technology that will one day augment and in some cases displace some of us is right around the corner. Professional scopes of practice and competencies are going to change significantly and some professions may be substantially reconfigured.
At The Michener Institute of Education at UHN (University Health Network, one of Canada’s largest networks of teaching hospitals), our job is to provide students with an education that will prepare them to provide the safest and best patient care in this fast-approaching context, while never losing sight of the human aspect of health care delivery.

A school within a hospital networkThe Michener Institute of Education at UHN lives in five campuses across the University Health Network in downtown Toronto. All of our full-time applied health sciences and health technology programs take place at the St. Patrick campus.
The Michener Institute’s main site at 222 St. Patrick Street is a dynamic and innovative educational facility. Michener’s main building consists of 14 floors that combine classrooms, laboratories and simulation suites to promote an integrated experience for our students. A five-story student residence, Schatz Hall, is connected to the main building.
Michener is located in the heart of the Discovery District in downtown Toronto, within blocks from health partners. The Centre for the Advancement of Simulation and Education (CASE) will play a large part in your educational experience. CASE is one of the largest simulation-based learning and evaluation centres in Canada. The Centre includes simulation suites and debrief rooms, as well as 24 clinical examination rooms typically used for objective structured clinical evaluations (OSCEs). The facilities enable students in all disciplines to learn by participating together in simulated scenarios and debriefing those scenarios in a safe learning environment.

In view of demographic trends, the Working with Seniors curriculum will provide you with the skills, knowledge and experience to enter your clinical placements and future practice with the competency and confidence to work effectively with older adults.
This intensive week-long training is incorporated into Michener’s summer semester, combining flexible learning formats such as e-learning modules and simulation experiences, including interacting directly with seniors, observing and participating in scenarios and wearing an innovative frail aging simulation suit. The Sakamoto Aging Simulation Suit significantly restricts a student’s movement and reduces eyesight and hearing ability, giving students the opportunity to experience the effects of aging on everyday life.
The opportunity to practice in a simulated clinical environment prepares you for what you may encounter in a clinical situation. Michener’s simulated environment is safe and controlled, allowing you to gain confidence and comfort with the application of your knowledge and skills. At the same time, faculty can observe your behaviours and skills and provide constructive feedback.

This program prepares students to apply ionizing radiation to treat patients with cancer. The curriculum combines general and liberal science courses offered on the Laurentian campus in Sudbury with discipline-specific courses delivered in a self-directed, online format by Michener. Courses are available in English, but students also have the opportunity to take some courses in French.

As a Radiation Therapist, you’ll work within an interdisciplinary oncology team consisting of physicians and other health care providers in cancer centres. “It’s as natural as breathing” is an expression you often hear, but rarely think about further. As a Respiratory Therapist you learn what it’s like for patients whose ability to breathe is compromised because of serious heart and lung diseases or trauma. You will provide a variety of care for adults, children and newborns. This will include performing diagnostic tests, completing patient assessments and providing therapies such as the administration of oxygen and medications, and provision of airway management and mechanical ventilation.
W H A T C A N I E X P E C T F R O M T H E P R O F E S S I O N ? Respiratory Therapists (RTs) work mostly in critical care environments such as emergency
rooms and intensive care units. They work in interprofessional teams with physicians, nurses and physiotherapists to treat and monitor patients’ complex cardiorespiratory needs. The work is fast-paced and multifaceted. RTs also work in community settings such as rehabilitation and homecare. Shifts are often 10-12 hours in duration and may be a combination of days, nights and weekends. Your income will vary depending on your hours and where you work.

Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging Technology(Joint Program with University of Toronto)
Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Technology is functional imaging used to safely detect disease in its early stages. Special cameras, computers and radioactive tracers are used to image how disease or treatments alter organ system function. Nuclear Medicine imaging involves non-invasive procedures to determine everything from the size and location of tumours, to the volume of blood ejected from the heart with each beat. Molecular Imaging utilizes specialized instrumentation alone, or in combination with targeted imaging agents, to visualize biochemical events at the cellular and molecular level in order to help identify regions of pathology and potential mechanisms of disease.
W H A T C A N I E X P E C T F R O M T H E P R O F E S S I O N ? This is a profession that involves extensive interaction with patients and their families, and other medical professionals. Nuclear Medicine Technologists work in hospitals, as well as in private imaging clinics, and generally work regular eight-hour shifts. To succeed in this field, technologists must have excellent communication skills to deliver optimal patient care. They must be able to work independently, as they will often have little direct supervision, and also be adept at working with a variety of sophisticated computer applications.

Radiological Technologists are responsible for producing images using radiation for the diagnosis of injuries and diseases. Technologists operate a variety of medical imaging equipment in areas such as general radiography, computed tomography, fluoroscopy and bone mineral densitometry. In doing so, they need to provide optimal care for the patient, utilize minimal radiation and employ appropriate radiation protection measures.
W H A T C A N I E X P E C T F R O M T H E P R O F E S S I O N ? The primary focus of the Radiological Technologist is to provide optimal care for the patient in a fast-paced environment. The Technologist must be able to quickly assess the patient’s needs and capabilities to effectively and efficiently position the patient and work
through required procedures. In addition to working in imaging departments, Technologists working in hospitals may be required to provide imaging services in the operating rooms, the emergency department, at the patient’s bedside or other areas of the hospital. In addition to clinical practice, opportunities for graduate Radiological Technologists include education, management and medical equipment sales. Technologists can go on to specialize in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), sonography, mammography and imaging informatics.

Cardiovascular perfusionists are important members of the cardiac surgical team whose primary role is to maintain a patient’s respiration, circulation and physiological state, commonly using extracorporeal circuits like the heart-lung machine during surgeries.
The Cardiovascular Perfusionist monitors vital signs while administering intravenous fluids, blood products and anesthetic drugs. Perfusionists also use other pieces of technology like ventricular assist devices and intra-aortic balloon pumps to maintain cardiac output as required.
W H A T C A N I E X P E C T F R O M T H E P R O F E S S I O N ? Using the heart-lung machine, cardiovascular perfusionists work alongside cardiac surgeons and anesthesiologists and the multidisciplinary operating room (OR) team. Working in the cardiac operating room environment is demanding and requires sustained mental and physical attentiveness during open heart surgery. You are expected to perform in the OR for up to 10 or 12 hours at a time. You may also be expected to work on-call or overtime.

As a Cytotechnologist, you will play a crucial role in the fight against cancer by examining human cells and preparing reports on any abnormal results for a pathologist who will make a definitive diagnosis based on your initial findings. Cytotechnologists detect and diagnose precancerous cellular changes by looking at specimen slides taken from pap smears, the lung, bladder, lymph nodes, thyroid gland and other parts of the body.

Diagnostic medical sonography (ultrasound) is an imaging technology that uses high-frequency sound waves to display real-time images of the soft tissue structures in the human body such as breast, thyroid, abdominal and pelvic organs, vessels and muscles. Sonographers use this technology to assess anatomical systems in order to differentiate between normal and pathologic findings, and to monitor pregnancies for fetal abnormalities, fetal growth and well-being.
Note: Repetitive strain injuries are a common occupational hazard. Practicing good ergonomics will help prevent or lessen this.
W H A T C A N I E X P E C T F R O M T H E P R O F E S S I O N ? Sonographers are employed in the diagnostic medical imaging department of hospitals or private clinics. They can also be employed as application specialists, sales representatives, research assistants or educators. In all of these settings the sonographer has to display competency in their academic knowledge and their scanning skills, as well as exemplary communication and collaboration skills in order to provide safe and high-quality patient care.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan is a procedure that creates images of the body using radio waves in conjunction with extremely powerful magnets. This non-invasive technique relies on the magnetic properties of atoms rather than radiation that is used in many other imaging procedures.
P R O G R A M I N F O R M A T I O NThe MRI Graduate Certificate program is a 19-month competency based program designed with the working technologist in mind. You can continue working full-time while taking the didactic (theory) component. The program ends with a clinical semester. This requires full-time attendance at the clinical site.
Anesthesia AssistantAn Anesthesia Assistant is a specially trained Registered Respiratory Therapist or Critical Care Registered Nurse that participates in the care of the stable surgical patient during general, regional, or conscious sedation anesthesia through medical directives under the supervision of and immediate availability of the anesthesiologist.
P R O G R A M I N F O R M A T I O NStudents in the program will complete 30 weeks of theory and simulation through a hybrid of online and in class learning. Currently a minimum 12 week clinical practicum, including an elective rotation in a specialty area is required for completion of the Anesthesia Assistant Graduate Certificate. Elective rotations are assigned to the student external to their base site. All students must demonstrate clinical competence in four specialty areas: cardiac, obstetrics, pediatrics and regional anesthesia as well as general adult anesthesia. The clinical phase is to be completed within a six month consecutive time frame.

The Michener English Language Assessment (MELA) is a standardized English language proficiency test specific to the health care sector. This test is referenced to the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) and MELA scores are used by post-secondary institutions and regulatory bodies as approved and acceptable demonstration of communicative competence to study or practice in English.
MELA measures English language communication skills in four areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing. The test takes about three and a half hours. MELA is administered in person at The Michener Institute only. There are several testing sessions each year.
MELA scores are used:• For admission to all Michener full-time, part-time and bridging programs;• As a diagnostic tool by program consultants;• For licensure by regulators.

BRIDGING PROGRAMS FOR INTERNATIONALLY EDUCATED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS (IEHPs)
The bridging program is designed for experienced IEHPs whose training and work experience have been assessed either by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) or the College of Medical Radiation Technologists of Ontario (CMRTO) and have been issued a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA). In each of the intensive and comprehensive 16 week programs, you will review core theory components, gain simulated laboratory experience and obtain thorough preparation to write either the CSMLS certification exam or the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) certification exam. These programs are offered in the evenings and on weekends, and may also include a one-week observership at the UHN.

Similar to Canadian medical schools, a MMI will be used to assess non-academic qualities and abilities, which cannot be ascertained from an academic record. Factual knowledge in any subject will not be tested. Instead, the ability to comprehend, reason and communicate is assessed.
The format consists of a series of non-clinical scenarios and simulations, each of which is conducted within 7-10 minutes. Top-ranked applicants will be invited to a MMI in the spring (mid-late April). For details see michener.ca/mmi.
