TROPICALVARIETY&QUEENSLANDARCHITECTURE(1850-1914)(2009-2011)BU ILD ING BETTER UNDERSTANDINGS OF THE CULTURE OF ARCHITECTURE & CL IMATE CHANGE

Western ideals of beauty have often been bound toan imageof thenaturalworld.Tropical climatesandthe physical environments they produced were alsooften seen to be degenerative to the creativeimpulse. In themid-nineteenth century, in responseto scientific exploration and the colonial experience, European ideals of beauty shifted their points ofreference from temperate to tropical environments. Investigating architectural design in 19th centuryQueensland, the project seeks to understand how English theories on creative invention responded whentransplantedintoatropicalsetting.TheresearchwillhavesignificanceinunderstandingQueensland’shistoryand thecultural corollariesof climateandenvironmental science.Documentingculturalproductsof climatechange, the research will also complement emerging UQ research strengths in Climate Change andArchitectureandCulture.OutcomesandRelatedPublications:Publications
