CourseDescription

ThiscoursewillexplorethroughclassroomlecturesandseminardiscussionsthetextsandpastoralpracticeofthecoreliturgicalritesfortheDivineEucharistintheByzantine(OrthodoxandEasternCatholic)churches,includingthehistoricalevolutionandtheologicalmeaningofthoserites.GuestlectureswillalsocovertheEucharisticliturgiesoftheOrientalOrthodoxchurches,specificallytheCopticandEthiopianrites.Thecoursewillalsoexploretheconceptofliturgicaltheology.

Studentswillbeevaluatedontheirclassparticipation,atextcommentaryandliturgicalreflectionpaper,aresearchpaperandfinaloralexam.

ExpandedCourseDescription

Thiscourseincludesreading,basicknowledgeandpastoralpracticeofthecoreliturgicalritesfortheDivineEucharistintheByzantine(OrthodoxandEasternCatholic)churches,andalsoincludesanoverviewoftheliturgicalhistoryoftheevolutionofthoserites.GuestlectureswillalsocovertheEucharisticliturgiesoftheOrientalOrthodoxchurches,specificallytheCopticandEthiopianrites.

Thecourse’saimincludesnotonlyhistoricalknowledgeorsimpleencounterwiththesetextsandrubrics,butalsotheologicalgraspofthesignificance,thereasons,thedeepexegeticalmeanings,andalsothe‘poetics’,whichunderliethepresentformandpracticeofEucharisticrites.IntheOrthodoxWay,inLiturgy,theOrthodoxfaithfuldiscovertherealityofchurchascommunityandthefinalrealityoftheosis,thewaytowardGod.

ThiscourseoffersafirstintroductiontoFrAlexanderSchmemann’sconceptofliturgicaltheology;butitisalsonecessarytogroundSchmemann’smoderncontributioninhistoricalroots,viz.,thepatristic‘mystagogical’writingsabouttheLiturgyfromthe2nd-14thcenturies.

BytheendofthiscoursestudentsshouldknowreasonablywelltheLiturgiesofStJohnChrysostomandStBasiltheGreat,andthePresanctifiedLiturgy,andtheyshouldhaveareasonablegraspofhowtheseliturgiescametohavetheirpresentstructure.StudentswillneedtohaveattendedatleasttwocelebrationsoftheDivineLiturgy,becauseawarenessofliturgicalprayerrequiresexperientialwholeness–sound,sight,smell,words,lightanddark,movementintheworshipspace,andhumancompany.

Oneofthekeythemesofthecourseisthedynamicqualityofliturgicalformandaction,anditsresponsivenesstosocialandpastoralcontext.ItistothisendthatelementsofthehistoricaldevelopmentofOrthodoxliturgicalworshipwillbeanimportantaspectofthecourse,togetherwiththetheological,social,andecclesiologicalissueswhichcontextualisethathistoricaldevelopment.Modernproblematicsinliturgicalpracticeandthediscussionofliturgicalreformandrenewalwillalsobeengagedinthiscontext.

Therewillbesometreatmentofthedevelopmentofchurcharchitectureas‘worshipspace’,butthisiscoveredmorefullyintheOrthodoxIconology:IconographyinaWorshipContextcourse.Alsothecyclesofthedailyliturgicalofficesandchurchyearareintroduced,butthesearethemainsubjectoftheSanctificationofTime:OrthodoxLiturgyoftheHoursandLiturgicalYearcourse.Furthertreatmentoftheholymysteries(sacraments)oftheOrthodoxtraditionisthesubjectoftheSanctificationofLife:TheOrthodoxMysteriesofBaptism,Marriage,HealingandDeathcourse.

Therearenoprerequisitesforthiscourse,thoughstudentswhotakethiscourseshouldhaveagoodgroundinginbothOldandNewTestament.Studentswithoutsuchabackgroundshouldspeaktotheinstructorwhowillprovidesomeremedialreadingpriortobeginningthecourse.

SomefamiliaritywithGreek(NewTestamentorPatristic)willbehelpfulforin-depthstudyoftheliturgicaltextsandpatristiccommentaries,thoughalltextswillbestudiedinEnglishtranslation.

PolicyonLateAssignments

Theinstructorreservestherighttodeductupto2.5%ofthefinalassignmentgradeforeachweekthatanassignmentislate.Studentsaregenerallygranteda‘graceweek’providedtheinstructorisinformedofanyspecialcircumstancesbeforetheassignmentdeadline.

Thispenaltyisnotappliedtostudentswithmedicalorcompassionatedifficulties;studentsfacingsuchdifficultiesarekindlyrequestedtoconsultwiththeirfacultyadvisororbasicdegreedirector,whoshouldmakearecommendationonthemattertotheinstructor.Theabsolutedeadlineforthecourseistheexaminationdayscheduledforthecourse.Studentswhoforexceptionalreasons(forinstance,adeathinthefamilyoraseriousillness)areunabletocompleteworkbythisdatemayrequestanextension(SDF=‘standingdeferred’)beyondtheterm.AnSDFmustberequestedfromtheregistrar’sofficeinthestudent’scollegeofregistrationnolaterthanthelastdayofclassesinwhichthecourseistaken.TheSDF,whenapproved,willhaveamutuallyagreedupondeadlinethatdoesnotextendbeyondtheconclusionofthefollowingterm.IfastudenthasnotcompletedworkbuthasnotbeengrantedanSDF,afinalmarkwillbesubmittedcalculatingazeroforworknotsubmitted.
