FLAG FOOTBALL CAPTAIN’S MEETING

TTU INTRAMURAL SPORTS OFFICE

Eligibility › Students

– Undergraduate and graduate students must be currently enrolled at least half time (six hours) to be eligible for participation.

– Alumni, spouses, & other dependents are not eligible and cannot participate in Intramural activities.

– Current varsity athletes cannot compete in their sport or related sport.

– Professional athletes cannot play their sport or related sport.

› Faculty/Staff – Currently employed at Tennessee Tech faculty and staff

may participate in intramural events.

Registration › Team Captains

– The liaison (i.e. point of contact) between the team and the Intramural Sports Office

› Captain’s Responsibilities– In short, the Captain is responsible for the behavior and actions of the

players, the team’s specators, and himself/herself. › Mandatory Captain’s Quiz & Meeting

– The Captain’s Quiz should be completed during the captain’s registration process.

› Team Names– Subject to approval by the Intramural Sports Office

› Roster Information– The captain is responsible for an accurate and up-to-date roster.

Divisions and Levels of Competition› Leagues

– Men’s Leagues › Recreational› Collegiate› IFC

– Women’s Leagues › Open › PHC

Defaults, Forfeits, & Grace Periods › Defaults

– An unplayed game without penalty to either team. To receive a default, the team captain must notify (by e-mail or in person) the IM Sports Office by 2:00 PM on the day of the contest.

› Forfeits – Failing to field a team for an intramural contest without

contacting the IM Sports Office. Teams may be assessed a $40.00 fee for each forfeit.

› Grace Periods – If at least one team member has signed in at game time,

the team will be granted a five-minute grace period.

Postseason Eligibility› The league will consist of a pool play section followed

by a postseason tournament. › Team records, results, and overall sportsmanship

rating will be considered final at noon on the day following the end of the regular season.

› Team captains should notify the IM Sports Office of any errors before the deadline.

› Please note that postseason eligibility and inclusion is subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances (.g. weather, time constraints etc.).

Postseason Eligibility › To be eligible for the postseason, each team must satisfy the following criteria: – Have zero forfeits– Have an average sportsmanship rating of a 3.0 or

better› Once a team meets all of the above requirements, postseason qualifications will vary by division.

› For the IFC and PHC divisions, all teams will be advanced to the postseason tournament.

Postseason Eligibility › For the Men’s Collegiate, Men’s Recreational, and Women’s Open divisions in the larger sports, the top team(s) in each pool shall automatically advance to the postseason tournament. The following criteria will determine pool rank: –Win/Loss Record –Head-to-Head Match Up –Point Differential–Sportspersonship Rating –Coin Toss

Policies and Procedures› Eagle Card Policy

– All participants should be prepared to present their Eagle Cards when signing in for each contest. If a participant cannot present his or her Eagle Card when asked, he or she cannot play. If a participant attempts to sign in using the Eagle Card of another individual, the Eagle Card will be confiscated, and the participant will not be allowed to play.

Policies and Procedures › Proper Attire

– All attire and equipment is subject to the approval of Intramural Sports staff.

– Any clothing or equipment that is deemed unsafe or illegal must be removed prior to competition.

– Intramural staff reserves the right to ask participants to remove or conceal clothing that, in the opinion of IM staff, displays offensive or demeaning language or imagery.

Policies and Procedures › Pets

– Pets are not allowed in the Campus Recreation & Fitness Center, Memorial Gym, and Intramural Pavilion.

– Pets are also not allowed on the playing surfaces (e.g. flag football/soccer fields, softball fields) of the Intramural fields.

– Pets may be brought to the Intramural fields. Owners are solely responsible for the behavior and actions of their pets. Pets must always be leashed, and all pet droppings must be picked up immediately.

Policies and Procedures › Equipment Checkout

– Participants may checkout equipment from the Intramural Sports Office and the Campus Recreation Pavilion.

– Sports kits are available at the Intramural Sports Office, and game balls may checked out at the Campus Recreation Pavilion during nightly intramural activities. We currently provide the following sports kits: › Flag Football › Kickball › Spikeball › Cornhole › Disc Golf › Tug-of-War

Policies and Procedures › Rules

– All TTU Intramural sport rules are based on rules publications of the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) and professional associations. When appropriate, rules are modified and/or created to level the playing field and foster a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.

Sportspersonship Rating System › The sportspersonship rating system serves to

assess a team’s attitude and behavior throughout the regular season and postseason.

› Actions and behaviors before, during, and after the contest are included in a team’s sportspersonship score.

› The team captain is responsible for educating his/her team and spectators about the sportspersonship system.

All Points Competition › IFC & PHC Divisions

– For the IFC and PHC divisions, all fraternities and sororities are automatically entered into the competition. Team are still required to register a team on IMLeagues and attend the captain’s meeting.

– All team members must be registered members of the fraternity or sorority.

– Regardless of the number of teams entered, a fraternity or sorority will gain participation points for a single team per major and minor sport.

– Teams will receive points for postseason participation and performance if they qualify for postseason eligibility. The team must default or play a postseason game to receive points.

Individual Awards › The male and female participant of the year will be

selected based on participation, sportspersonship, team/individual success, and overall enthusiasm and passion for TTU Intramural Sports.

Extramural Competitions › TTU Intramural participants may be asked to

represent Tennessee Tech University at local, regional, and national extramural tournaments. These extramural competitions are an excellent opportunity to visit a new place and learn new strategies and techniques in flag football and basketball. Please contact the Intramural Sports Office for more information.

FLAG FOOTBALL BASICS

Playing Field

Player Equipment› Jerseys/Shirts

– Similar in color but distinguishable from other team– Must be either long enough to remain tucked in or short enough so there is a minimum of four (4”)

inches from the bottom of the jersey to a player’s waist› Athletic Shorts or Pants

– Flags and Shorts must be different colors– No pockets

› Pockets cannot be taped or “dog-eared”.

› Flag Belt – Flags on each side and back– Clipped, NOT tied

› Sunglasses– Non-rigid material

› Hats– No billed hats or any headwear with knots– Headbands and knit or stocking caps are legal.

Player Equipment› Athletic Shoes

– Shoes must be worn at all times!– No vibrams– Molded rubber cleats, screw-in cleats, and

molded rubber cleats with metal tips are allowed.

– No spiked cleats or screw-in metal cleats.

The Game› Players

– Seven players on the field– Six required to avoid a forfeit

› The Ball– Men may only use the regular size ball.– Women may use the regular, intermediate, youth, or

junior size ball.

The Game: Timing› Two Twenty Minute halves

– The clock will run for the first eighteen minutes of each half.

– Clock will stop for the last two minutes of each half.

› Teams have three timeouts per game – The clock will ALWAYS stop for team and official timeouts.

› Injured Player– If the clock is stopped by any official due to an injury, that

player must be removed from the game for at least one play.

› Inside the two minute warning, the clock will stop for the following:– Incomplete Pass (Snap)– Out of Bounds (Snap)– Scores/Touchback (Snap)– Change of Possession (Snap)– First Down (Ready for Play Whistle)– Penalties (Dependent on Previous Play)

The Game: Possessions & First Downs› Possessions will START on the

14 Yard Line– At the beginning of each half– After all scoring plays (try and

safety)– Touchbacks

› Teams will have Four Downs to advance the ball to the Next Zone Line-To-Gain or Goal Line.

› On 4th down, Teams may elect to Punt or Attempt to go for the Next Zone Line-To-Gain.– Once a decision had been made, it

can only be changed by calling a timeout.

The Game: Scoring› Touchdown (TD)

– Value: Six Points– Nose of the ball crosses the plane of the Goal

Line with possession by an offensive player– Receiver catches the ball in the end zone with at

least 1 foot in bounds (1st foot must land in bounds).

› Safety– Value: Two Points– Runner carries the ball from the field of play to or

across his/her own goal line and becomes dead in their own end zone in his/her team possession.

– Player punts, passes, fumbles, snaps, muffs, or bats a loose ball from the field of play into the end zone (includes on the goal line).

– Any accepted offensive penalties committed in the end zone.

The Game: Scoring› The Try (Extra Point Attempts)

– After a Successful TD (unless moved by penalty)› 1 point from 3 yard line› 2 points from 10 yard line› 3 points from 20 yard line

– Once the scoring team selects how many points they will be attempting, they can not change their decision without using a timeout.

– If the defense intercepts the pass, the play is dead.
