SIOUX FALLS — If the teamsfrom Region 4B had not alreadythrust themselves on the state’sradar, they have now.

Four of the top five boys’ teamsat the South Dakota State B TrackMeet in Sioux Falls, which con-cluded Saturday in Sioux Falls,were from the region — as weretwo of the top three girls’ teams.

Ipswich ran away with the girls’crown, but Parker took second andGayville-Volin tied for third place.And on the boys’ side, Herreid-Selby Area beat defending cham-pion Viborg-Hurley by eight points,while Parker, Irene-Wakonda andFreeman rounded out the top five.

Not bad for one area.“Basically six of the top nine

teams on both sides are from ourregion; that’s crazy,” said Parkercoach Phil Bjorneberg, whose pro-gram won the Class B combinedteam title.

The Parker girls accumulated37.5 points (well behind Ipswich’s116), while the Pheasants boysrolled up 58.5 points for third.

“The guys we knew would be inthe mix, but the girls weren’ttalked about as much,” Bjorneberg

said. “It’s not a total shock, butuntil it happens, you just don’tknow.”

Relays were again a strength forthe Parker girls. The Pheasantswon the 800 and 1600 relays, andtook second in the 400.

The squad had to replace AnnaLeloux on the relays from a yearago, but still continued their ClassB dominance — thanks to the an-chor of senior Tessa Weeldreyer.

“We had three girls back,though, but we still had to adjust,”Weeldreyer said. “(The 800) is myfavorite race, because it’s more ofa team effort. We all have the samepassion for track.”

Ipswich, which set a Class Brecord with 116 total points, hasonly three seniors among its 19athletes from the state meet.Eighth-grader Macy Heinz wasnamed track MVP after winning the400, 800, 1600 and running a leg inthe winning 3200 relay.

Gayville-Volin, with 35 points,tied with Sully Buttes for thirdplace, but freshman GenevieveClark said she believes the Raidersaren’t far from competing for atitle.

“We’re hoping we can get somefield events qualified next year,”Clark said. “I think we can; we’ve

got some younger girls on the wayup.

“Then we can really be competi-tive here.”

The boys’ team race was signifi-cantly closer. A total of 34 pointsseparated Herreid-Selby Area fromfifth-place Freeman.

A big reason why Herreid-SelbyArea unseated Viborg-Hurley fromtheir championship mantle wasDakota Thorstenson. He wasseeded seventh in the triple jump,but won the title at 41-feet-7. Thatleap of eight points proved to bethe difference for the team champi-onship.

Viborg-Hurley, though, stillfound success.

“It’s pretty crazy when youthink about it, but that was ourgoal, to win both again,” Gerdessaid.

Trevor Jacobsen finished sec-ond in both the 100- and 200-meterdashes, while Tyler Novak wasfourth in the 100 and sixth in the200.

SIOUX FALLS — Placing 10thand 11th overall, the YanktonBucks and Gazelles were hopingfor better results, but were con-tent with the experience of thestate meet.

The Bucks placed 10th with 23points and the Gazelles finished11th with 29.5 points at the statetrack meet at Howard Wood Fieldin Sioux Falls Friday.

In the boys’ division SiouxFalls Washington placed first with138 points, followed by SiouxFalls Roosevelt (102.5 points) andBrandon Valley in third (81.5). Ab-erdeen Central placed first for thegirls with 108 points, followed byRapid City Stevens (99) and RapidCity Central (95).

JJ Hejna took fifth in the highjump and the triple jump andsixth in the long jump, whileCasey Skillingstad was fifth in thepole vault. Brice Cowman came infifth in the 3200-meter run andeighth in the 1600-meter run, withJames Hofer taking seventh in thepole vault, Richard Culver comingin eighth in the 100-meter dashand Lee Rose taking 10th in thelong jump. The Bucks also took10th in the 800-meter run and the4X800 relay.

Hejna said he placed where heshould have, and enjoyed com-peting with the best athletes inthe state.

“It was fulfilling just gettingthe experience and having every-thing come together at the endwith the state meet,” he said.“Personally, I peaked at the righttime. At the beginning of the yearit wasn’t looking too promising,but I definitely increased andpeaked consistently at the righttime of the year.”

The Gazelles were fourth inthe 4x800-meter relay and sixth inthe 4x100-meter relay. AnnieKruse placed third in the 3200-meter run and 10th in the 1600-meter run, while Hailey Lukentook fourth in the 100-meter hur-dles. Whitlee Larson also came ineighth in the 800-meter run andninth in the 1600-meter run.Kelsey Fitzgerald tied for fifth inthe high jump, with Allie Murphytaking eighth and Adrienne Kusek10th in the shot put.

Although Luken was only sup-posed to place eighth in the hur-dles, she said her hard workthroughout the season paid off.

“I really surprised myself withhow I did,” she said. “It was reallyexciting, and it took a lot of hardwork. My coach really pushed meand I couldn’t have done it with-out him.

“Practices were tough at timesand it was hard to keep going, but Ilove it so much so it was worth it.”

Also competing in the 4x100relay, Luken is looking forward toimproving for the future.

“I’m running with three of mybest friends and we work great asa team,” she said. “It was well bal-anced and everything went reallywell for us. It’s great because lastyear we had the same relay andplaced fifth, and with just losingone member for next year shouldkeep up pretty solid.”

Assistant coach CarmenRobinson was also recognizedwith the distinguished serviceaward for her 38 years of coach-ing at the meet.

SIOUX FALLS — Nicknamed “BigCat,” Lincoln Feist was able toscratch out a rather gutty perform-ance on the mound.

And as a result, St. ThomasMore won another state high base-ball title.

Aided by a strong start from thebig lefty, the Cavaliers beat BonHomme 4-1 in Monday night’schampionship game at the S.D.State Class B Baseball Tournamentin Sioux Falls.

St. Thomas More, which finishedthe season 14-0, has now won threechampionships in the last fiveyears.

“Every one is special,” headcoach Jeff Pekny said. “I’m veryproud of it. That’s our expectationevery year.”

Bon Homme, on the other hand,comes up just short of its secondtitle in the last three years. TheCavaliers (11-4) won the crown in2011.

Monday, however, was a tale ofonly a few plays, according to headcoach Gary Kortan.

“We equaled them, for sure, buta few plays didn’t go our way,” saidKortan, whose team beat Harris-burg 6-1 in Monday’s semifinal.

“A few of those go the other wayand the score could be opposite.”

The tournament was condensedto three games at Augustana’sRonken Field, with no third-placegame. They were originally movedacross town after wet field condi-tions at Sioux Falls Stadium.

St. Thomas More (14-0), how-ever, didn’t seem to mind a changeof venue.

After beating Deubrook-Deuel-Estelline-Castlewood-Hamlin 7-2 inthe first semifinal, the Cavaliersturned to their ace in the biggestgame of the season. He respondedwith a complete game 6-hitter.

“We got away with not throwinghim in the first game; Patrick(Yantes) threw a great game,”Pekny said. “He (Feist) twisted anankle there late, but he’s somethingspecial.”

After combining for 13 errors inits district and region victories toget to state, Bon Homme commit-ted three miscues in Monday’sfinal.

St. Thomas More, the 2009 and2010 state champion, started thescoring first with a 2-run single byA.J. Schaefbauer in the bottom ofthe third inning — a liner that wentoff the glove of a Bon Homme in-fielder.

Yankton went 2-0 against theSouth Dakota Flash in league ac-tion, then split with the Norfolk(Neb.) Impact in non-league games.The games were not a part of theSummer Slam Tournament, whichwas also going on in Vermillionover the weekend.

Katie Koletzky picked up the win, striking outfive.

In the nightcap, Bye struck out 12 and addeda hit at the plate in a 2-1 Yankton win.

BROOKINGS (AP) — The SouthDakota State baseball team isheaded to its first NCAA Division Iregional tournament after captur-ing the Summit League title.

The Jackrabbits will face Ore-gon at 8 p.m. CDT Friday in theopening round of the Eugene Re-gional.

South Dakota State (35-22)topped North Dakota State 1-0 inthe first game Sunday in the Sum-mit League baseball champi-onship. Starting pitcher ShaneKraemer allowed five hits, nowalks and struck out two in 5 1/3innings to improve to 4-2 with thewin. Layne Somsen got the final sixouts for his first save of the year.

South Dakota State also tookthe opener Sunday 2-0.
