Turramurra Heritage Precinct Walk
Proposed Sustainable Beautification of Turramurra Village
A Potential Award Winner in Urban Planning
A Gift for Sydney
Turramurra Heritage Precinct Walk Sydney’s Early History Highlighted, Protected and Signed for Visitation
A Vision for Turramurra that is Different to Hornsby and Chatswood
• Old and New – part adaptive restoration and part completely new
• Progress and Protection – Turramurra needs change - also its history needs protection
• Modern and Historical – something new embedded within heritage areas
• North and South – permits the development of retail on both sides of the Pacific Hwy
Why a Heritage Precinct Walk
• Cumulative, significant biodiversity loss has occurred in the village of Turramurra
• The Heritage Precinct Walk will recompense that loss to some degree
• The project is designed to put a significant collection of buildings into focus
• Heritage signs to highlight Turramurra’s and Sydney’s early settlement history
• It defines a master-plan around which new, people friendly development can occur
• The potential exists for Ku-ring-gai to have an award winning urban precinct
Public Spaces Add Socio-economic Value to Sydney

Examples where other Councils have shown civic vision:
Turramurra Heritage Precinct An Integrated Village Scheme
• Turramurra Railway Station - history
• Sydney Ancher Library – adaptive reuse
• Village Park – community open spaces
• Hillview – unique heritage
• Gilroy Street – historic buildings
• Rohini Street - streetscape
• Supermarket – new shopping precincts
• Gardens – community involvement

Can be both Redeveloped and Aesthetically Preserved
Turramurra Village Park A Green Space That Links
Hillview A Rare Heritage Precinct
The only remaining collection of public buildings in Ku-ring-gai which - as a group - cover several different periods of Sydney’s early settlement
Hillview Buildings, Grounds & Views
This rare vista still survives from Turramurra’s early history.
The curtilage with its row of 100 year old trees needs protection before it is lost to development
Hillview Stables & Heritage Trees
Adaptively reuse and preserve
Hillview Stables – Economically Sustainable Adaption
Potential to Create a New, Exciting
Restaurant Precinct for Turramurra
(picture shows what can be done at the Hillview Stables)
Hillview Old Gates & New Gardens
The gates and stonework establish an area for contemplation
The Community Garden folk are keen to take on the creation of Hillview’s gardens:
MINIMAL COST TO COUNCIL
Hillview Adjoining Heritage Buildings: Chemist Shop
Still standing, the original chemist shop (shown above at the top of the hill beside “Lane Cove Road”, and to the right as it currently exists)
has the potential to be sympathetically redeveloped into a guest-house or health-based business
Hillview Adjoining Heritage Buildings: Art Deco and Cottages
Current health theme adaptions:
• A dentist’s surgery near the Chemist Shop
• A Health Spa in the Art Deco style Commonwealth Bank building
Rohini Street Can be Revitalised to Enhance the Heritage Character
Gilroy Heritage Precinct Martin Gilroy’s Original Home and the Station Master’s Cottage (12 Gilroy Rd): Defining the Heritage Character of Turramurra
Turramurra’s Churches
These are symbols of a classic period of Sydney’s history.

Socio-Economic Value of Highlighting Turramurra’s Environment & History
This vision would create:
• An adaptively restored and integrated Heritage and Commercial Precinct which is economically sustainable
• A potentially award winning urban plan - creating a lasting “sense of place” for Ku-ring-gai
• A new community meeting place - establishing a civic and cultural hub for Turramurra and Ku-ring-gai
• A educational walk, highlighting Turramurra’s contribution to Sydney’s early history
• A monument to the history of Turramurra while enhancing the value of Hillview
• An active place for the local community to landscape and beautify at minimal cost to Council
