UK101’s Living in a Diverse

World

• Understand that we are all learning

• Respect Others• Be open to talking about

difficult topics• Debate vs. Dialogue• Present your real self• Speak from your own

experiences• Let people complete their

thoughts• It’s ok to have “ouch”

moments• None of us are experts• Nonverbal reactions are

important

“We are here to learn, not believe.”

Break participants into 4-5 groups

Read each scenario and try to put them in order from the least to most sensitive

Let’s Talk About It

The Big Reveal

Attitudes, policies and practices which are destructive to cultures and individuals within them

Lacks capacity to respond effectively to the needs, interests and preferences of diverse groups; not deliberately harmful but doing so anyway

“Color-blind”—unaware of how the dominant culture may erase cultural distinctions that are valuable

Recognizes that differences are important, but lacking the skills to respond in an appropriate fashion. Tendency to tokenize

Awareness of what one knows and does not know. A recognition of the variety of experiences and perspectives

Working “with” not “for” people of difference. Motivation to build partnerships among diverse groups.

Make Change…Celebrate Diversity
