Unfortunate Ways Smoking Can Affect Your

Teeth

Web MD notes on its site that smoking causes yellow teeth, bad breath, increased risk of tooth decay and oral cancer, as well as the buildup of plaque and tartar.

However, this is nothing new. Family dentists have been telling people for years about the effects of smoking.

The problem for many is that the immediate satisfaction of smoking is hard to pass up for a downside that is in the distant future, but do the effects of smoking really take that long?

Bad Breath

After one cigarette, the odor of nicotine (and everything else in it) is on one's breath. This can be alleviated with a meal or by brushing one's teeth.

However, it is not one cigarette, cigar or pipe that causes bad breath; it is a lifetime of smoking that does.

Plaque, Tartar, and Decay

When plaque and tartar build up they break down the tooth's enamel. This leads to decay, and when something decays it is actually rotting.

Festering teeth become ruined over the course of years, so their owner is not likely to taste or smell the ill effects.

Instead, he or she will become used to the slow transition as new friends and colleagues find themselves repulsed.

Sadly, this can lead to the loss of many lucrative opportunities.

Oral Cancer

The last stop on this very expensive train ride is cancer. Depending on the severity of the disease there may have to be significant tissue and/or tooth removal.

Along with the pain and suffering, as well as the missed time at work and with loved ones, many find themselves in states of deep depression as a result of how it can change the way they look and feel.

Fortunately, there is some help available.

Cosmetic Work to Relieve the Effects of Smoking

For those who don't stop smoking, the damage can never be curtailed. However, cosmetic dentists can help.

The results are very noticeable, and many patients find themselves surprised by how much younger they look and feel when it is finished.

Some insurance providers will not cover these procedures since they are elective, and many feel that the cost is too high, but it is nothing compared to the cost of smoking.

How Much DoesSmoking Cost?

Instead of getting into the high cost of cigarettes, it has been reported that people who smoke pay higher insurance premiums and miss out on opportunities in their career.

There are also the opportunity costs of smoking, as noted by Dr. Thomas Stanley, author of The Millionaire Next Door.

In his book he notes that a young man explained that his family had never been rich because they never had a high income.

While this may seem true, it turned out that both of his parents smoked a lot. In fact, over the course of their lives they had smoked more than 50,000 packs (more than 1,000,000 cigarettes).

Had the money been invested into shares of the tobacco company they would have actually had a seven figure portfolio!

Smoking and your livelihood are not independent of each other. They must be considered together.

For those who don't stop smoking, the damage can never be curtailed.

However, cosmetic dentists at Shumway Dental Care can help. Their Chandler dentists will ask you questions, examine you, and determine exactly what needs to be done to get you back to normal.
