Adjectives describe nounsThey must agree in GENDER and

NUMBER with the nouns they describe

Adjectives ending in –o in the masculine form become – a in the feminine form

MOST other adjectives have identical masculine and feminine forms

End in –o masculineUn amigo simpático

End in –a feminineUna amiga simpática

Universal: both masculine and feminineUn chico popularUna chica popular

Universal endingUn chico inteligenteUna chica inteligente

-or becomes –oraTrabajador, trabajadora

-án becomes –anaHolgazán, holgazana

-ón becomes –ona

-Preguntón, preguntonaMayor, menor, mejor, superior are universalMi hermano mayorMi hermana mayor

Most end in –a for feminineUn doctor españolUna doctora española

To make an adjective ending in a consonant plural, ADD “-es”

To make an adjective ending in a vowel plural, ADD “-s”

Same pattern as nouns

Un chico serio, conservador, feliz, inglés, y holgazán BECOMES ?????????????????

Unos chicos, serios, conservadores, felices, ingleses, y holgazanes

Usually come after the noun they modifyMaría es una estudiante mexicana.

Masculine forms of bueno, malo, primero, tercero BECOME…..

Buen, mal, primer, tercer in front of the nounUn artista buenoUn buen artista

Becomes gran before both masculine and feminine nouns

Un gran problema/una gran reunión

Some adj. have different meanings depending on whether they are before or after the noun

Una ciudad grandeA large city

Una gran ciudadA great/fabulous city

El pobre hombreThe poor (unfortunate) man

Una amiga viejaAn old (elderly) friend

Una vieja amigaAn old (long time) friend
