UNIT-E
ABOUT UNIT-E UNIT-E was founded in the spring of 2010 with the aim of establishing a non-profit, student-run magazine for international students in Beijing. Staffed by current students from a range of international schools, the magazine provides an amalgam of cultural tidbits, fragments of Beijing student life, and a broad spectrum of unique perspectives from a diverse group of young adults.
UNIT-E’S VISION AND PHILOSOPHY UNIT-E is dedicated to its service as a medium for the empowerment of international school students through writing and expression. The publication strives to support students in becoming proactive world citizens and developing strong involvement in addressing social issues in Beijing. Beijing international school students’ individual efforts to address a vast array of social issues have resulted in numerous small accomplishments that are successes in their own right, but have little impact on the large-scale issues which these projects address. UNIT-E believes in the synergy embedded in a dedicated core of proactive youths, whose united effort harbours an impact far beyond the small-scale. UNIT-E believes in the harnessing of this life-changing power - the ability for youth to create substantial improvement in any community through cohesive and comprehensive efforts - and so envisions UNIT-E as a framework for any and all Beijing students to engage with local Beijing and make a positive impact on the status quo.
A LETTER FROM THE EDITORS-IN-CHIEFDear Reader,
Welcome to our first issue of 2014!
We hope that you’ve had a relaxing winter holiday and that you are prepared to take on the novel challenges of 2014 with enthusiasm and passion.
As a new year can always be more demanding, we have amassed articles in this issue about topics ranging from the art of DJ-ing (page 34) to a pundit’s view of the World Cup (page 44) to help you relieve your stress. For those who are looking for ways of clearing your mind, check out the Chillax column to see how keeping a journal could help.
Another column we’d like to highlight in this issue is the Arts. This month, UNIT-E brings you a special interview with the 2011 Australian Poetry Slam champion, Luka Lesson, where he shares extraordinary stories about his experiences. For aspiring poets, this might serve as a good source of inspiration and motivation.
For new readers who are leafing through UNIT-E for the first time, UNIT-E is a student-run magazine that is distributed to many international schools in Beijing. Here at UNIT-E, we encourage students who are willing to voice their opinions and thoughts on anything to submit their pieces. If you are one of them, just send an email to:laurenyou@unit-emagazine.org.
Have a fantastic year and when school gets too overwhelming, hold on tight to UNIT-E——you might just find that unicorns will come to your rescue.
Yours faithfully,Lauren You and Kathleen Ma
