UNIT SEVEN: FARM MANAGEMENT

CLASS B- AGROECOLOGY

THE MEANING OF FARM MANAGEMENT

Farm Management is the application of business principles and the scientific principles of agriculture (as discovered by the chemist, the physicist, the agronomist and other specialists) to the business of farming. The farm manager is the one who plans the farm, arranges the cropping scheme, provides the equipment and actually transacts the business and sees to the operation of the farm.

The term is a new one and it is important that students of farming get a clear understanding of its meaning. Because of the close relation of farm management to soils, farm crops, live stock, and other agricultural subjects, people often confuse the terms and gain erroneous ideas of what farm management really is.

• Farm management is also related closely to rural economy. There is danger of confusion arising in the consideration of these terms also. Questions which relate to the single farm as a unit or to a group of farms operated under the same organization are matters of farm management. Those which relate to a group of farms operated separately, or to a community, are matters of rural economy.

PRODUCTION

MARKETING

These differences in management can show up in three areas

• Financing covers not only borrowing money and the related questions of when, where, and how much, but also the entire area of how to acquire the resources necessary to produce agricultural commodities.

• Marketing includes the when, where, and how of purchasing inputs and selling commodities.

• Production differences include the choice of agricultural commodities to be produced and how they are produced.

These differences in management canshow up in three areas:

• It identifies profitability as a major objective of the business but not necessarily to the exclusion of other objectives

• This definition specifically identifies decisions and decision making as part of the management process

Farm Management contains several important points :

Tips to be a manager

• be responsible• honest• fair • Be the manager and friend for your employees,

and treat each person uniquely in accordance with their respective needs

The farmer must meet both classes of questions. To state it differently, those things that have to do with the organization and operation within the individual farm relate to farm management. Those that have to do with the external relations of the individual farm to the group or community, relate to rural economy.
