In order to conduct his scientific activities, his main efforts has been oriented for
the research, development and implementation of innovative solutions for
personalized non-invasive remote monitoring solutions (pHealth), able to support
the management of the disease, with particular application to situations of
preventive medicine and chronic disease management.
With this aim he has developed research work mainly in advanced algorithms,
processing and analysis of vital signs (especially electrocardiogram, heart sound and
lung sound) as well as computational intelligence methodologies (such as neural
networks, fuzzy systems, Bayesian models and decision trees). These strategies
have been applied in the decision support, in the diagnosis of specific conditions
and clinical events, and in the development of models, with particular application
in the assessment and prediction of the status and cardiovascular risk. The results
of these developments are, in most cases, integrated into functional prototypes
inside of several projects on which he has participated.
In addition to the engineering activities, from the perspective of the technologies
needed to support the implementation of projects in which he has participated
(applications, platforms, acquisition solutions and information storage) , he has
oriented their scientific activity according to three well-defined directions:
modeling, diagnosis and prediction.
In this area he has proposed hybrid approaches, capable of combining in robust
schemes information from various sources, in particular clinical evidence (literature
scores statistically validated) and information obtained either in hospital or in
remote monitoring environments. In particular, he has been involved in the
development of personalized models able to assess and stratify the status and
cardiovascular risk of patients (FP7 HEARTCYCLE, FP7 HEARTWAYS and FCT
CARDIORISK).
Other topic where he has also dedicated his research efforts, has been at the
interpretability level of the derived models. With this goal, he has participated in
the development of hybrid strategies that combine clinical knowledge (knowledge-
driven) with information extracted from the data (data-driven) as well as in
strategies that constrains the data mining process (based on data) to ensure the
consistency of the results from the clinical perspective (FP7 HEARTWAYS ).
Recently, he started the research of strategies able to personalize cardiovascular
models (lumped models) based on parameters extracted from the bio-signals
acquired in tele-monitoring solutions (PIONEER HORIZON2020).
Moreover, he maintains the activity in the field of system theory and advanced
control using computational intelligence methodologies (research topic of his PhD).
In effect, these are especially useful in the context of modeling and prediction from
a general perspective and, in particular, in the clinical area.
He has dedicated a significant part of its research activities to the development of
advanced algorithms for bio-signal analysis, as well as computational intelligence
methodologies able to detect and characterize a wide variety of clinical events (such
as ischemic events and arrhythmias). For this purpose his main focus has been the
analysis of the electrocardiogram and blood pressure, with particular application in
heart failure management and coronary heart disease (FP6 MYHEART and FP7
HEARTCYCLE).
Additionally to the ECG analysis, he has also focused on the heart sound analysis,
in order to estimate parameters to diagnose and assess the hemodynamic status, in
particular the estimation of cardiac output (FP6 HEARTCYCLE, FP7 HEAETWAYS,
FCT HEARTSAFE). Based on the lung sound analysis algorithms, he has participated
Curriculum Vitæ |
in the developed algorithms to diagnose the most significant pathologies relevant
for the management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (FP7 WELCOME).
Moreover, he has developed research work in the development and implementation
of data mining techniques to the diagnosis of obstructive apnea (particularly in
children populations), based on the analysis of signals collected in poly-sonography
studies.
With respect to prediction methodologies his efforts has been oriented towards two
main directions: at the level of individual bio-signal and at the level of
simultaneous use of multiple bio-signals (multi-parametric approach). Regarding
the former, he has proposed strategies using non-linear regressive models, as well
as, methodologies using case based reasoning techniques (supported on
computational intelligence methodologies), able to predict relevant cardiovascular
events, such as episodes of hypotension and hypertension based on the analysis of
blood pressure (FP7 HEARTWAYS). Regarding the multi-parametric approach, he has
proposed and developed strategies able to consider simultaneously in the same
scheme several bio-signals and even other sources of information. These strategies
have been applied in cardiovascular risk prediction models both at short and long
term prediction (FP7 HEARTCYCLE, FP7 HEARTWAYS, FCT CARDIORISK) and in the
early detection of cardiac decompensation (FP7 HEARTWAYS).
The validity of these strategies was recognized in the competition supported by
Physionet/Computing in Cardiology 2009 - Predicting Acute Hypotensive Episodes:
The 10th Annual Physionet Computers in Cardiology Challenge, Salt Lake City,
USA. The development of a computational model based on neural networks able to
predict, with one hour in advance, episodes of hypotension in patients hospita lized
in intensive care allowed him to win the challenge in 2009 (between approximately
50 participants from several nationalities).
In order to maintain the sustainability of the different activities, he has developed
regular work in the development of algorithms and strategies to support solutions
to the decision in eHealth scenarios. These are essentially based on computational
intelligence methodologies and advanced bio-signal processing techniques, with
practical application in:
▪ Development of strategies for , both
at long and at short term predictions, with application to heart failure and
coronary heart disease, respectively. For this purpose he has developed
hybrid methods (information fusion), capable of combining in the same
model knowledge from several sources (scores, tables, clinical evidence).
These models enables, on the one hand, more generic models for use in
clinical practice and, at the other hand, robust models capable of dealing
with the lack of information. Furthermore, through the use of clustering
strategies, it has been possible to address the problem of personalization of
such models. This activity has led to a doctoral thesis (Simão Paredes) and a
master thesis (Tânia Marques) coordinated by the candidate, mainly
supported by the projects FP7 HEARTCYCLE FP7, FP7 HEARTWAYS, and FCT
CARDIORISK.
▪ , with particular application to
electrocardiograms integrated in tele-monitoring solutions (FCT LIFESTREAM
HEARTBIT). Basically, assuming the regularly of the signal,
modeling/compression strategies were developed. This topic originated two
masters theses (Mario Brito, Teresa Mendes) that has been implemented in
the functional prototype carried out in the LIFESTREAM project.
▪ Development of , mainly applied to the
electrocardiogram, which cover the major cardiac arrhythmias considered
relevant to the management of heart failure and coronary heart disease
conditions (including premature ventricular contractions, ventricular
tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation and ischemic episodes). These algorithms
has been integrated in applications developed in national and international
projects, namely (FP6 MYHEART, FP7 HEARTCYCLE, LIFESTREAM). These have
been supported by several works, namely two master thesis (Amândio
Marques), coordinated by the candidate, and one coordinated by the Prof.
Paulo de Carvalho (Ricardo Couceiro).
▪ He has collaborated on the orientation of students in the development of
, particularly in researching methodologies for
its segmentation and classification. This topic has been developed and
successfully implemented to enable the identification of the relevant sounds
(S1 and S2) as well as in the detection of noise. These works were mainly
developed under the project FCT SOUNDFORLIFE and FP7 HEARTCYCLE and
originated several works, namely a master thesis (João Ramos), supervised
by Prof. Paulo de Carvalho.
▪ Within the same topic (heart sound analysis) he also participated in the
coordination of students relatively to the extraction of parameters able to
characterize the , such as , contractility,
and . These parameters have been estimated based on other
vital signs, through a multi-parametric analysis, such as ICG (cardiothoracic
impedance) and PPG (photo-plethysmogram). This activity has been
developed in partnership with Philips Research, fundamentally inserted in
Curriculum Vitæ |
the draft FP7 HEARTCYCLE, and originated a doctoral thesis (Dinseh Kumar)
supervised by Prof. Paulo de Carvalho.
▪ Development of automatic classification systems applied to the detection
of , in collaboration with the
Pediatrician Hospital – Coimbra. By means of data-mining methodologies, it
was possible to identify in the polysomnography signals discriminative
parameters to detect the events in question. This topic originated three
master theses (Sofia Pinto, Magali Barbosa, and Henrique Mendes), all
coordinated by the candidate.
▪ By means of advanced signal processing techniques applied to vital signs,
he has developed solutions and tools to support the
. Specifically, he has developed
methodologies capable to identify and compare trends of vital signs, daily
collected in tele-monitoring scenarios, with the past historical, enabling the
early detection of specific events. A particular application relates the
detection of hypertension and hypotension episodes in the context of FP7
projects HEARTCYCLE and HEARTWAYS. The major part of this work was
conducted during a doctoral thesis (Teresa Rocha), coordinated by the
candidate.
▪ Also in this context (prediction/early detection schemes), he has
developed specific strategies based on computational intelligence
methodologies, to the
. In fact, the application of neural models in this particular context
(hypotension episodes prediction) allowed him to win the challenge proposed
by Physionet/Computing in Cardiology Conference 2009 "Prediction of acute
hypotensive episodes" (between approximately 50 participants).
▪ In collaboration with the Polytechnic of Milano - POLIMI, he has
participated in the development of non-linear methods for the analysis of
vital signs, particularly in what concerns the applied to
ECG signals. The main goal has been the characterization of the
cardiovascular status, in particular the heart failure condition. He participate
(not officially) in the co-coordination of a doctoral thesis (Ramona Cabiddu).
This collaboration was the basis for the project FCT CARDIORISK (to finish
September 2015).
In a short/medium term, his research activities will continue to focus
computational intelligence methodologies and advanced signal processing
techniques with application to clinical problems, particularly in the development of
solutions to be integrated into tele-monitoring applications.
▪ Supported by the partnership with the (Greece),
he collaborated in the submission of a project to the HORIZIN2020 financing
program (PHC2 -2015: Understanding diseases: medicine systems) in the
topic of modeling/cardiac tele-monitoring. The project is entitled PIONEER-
HF: Predictive modeling to Improve Outcome in Early and end stage Heart
Failure Patients. The basic idea is to develop
capable to be useful in the characterization and development of
heart failure condition, as well as to recognize future effects of medication.
The parameters of these models will be adjusted/personalized through the
information collected by remote monitoring solutions, in particular as a
result of the advanced analysis of non-invasive signals (ECG and heart
sound).
▪ As a result of accumulated experience in FP6 HEARTCYCLE and FP7
HEARTWAYS projects, he recently initiated the extension of the developed
prediction strategies (single variable approach) to a multi-parametric
scheme. The main goal is the application of , such
as . For this purpose, he coordinated the submission
of FCT project in collaboration with the ,
and company (January 20015). EEARLYDETECT: multi-
parametric analysis for the early detection of heart failure decompensation
supported by tele-monitoring system.
▪ Following his partnership with the and the
, has been an ongoing study has been carried out at the Faculty
of Medicine, University of Porto (Neonatal Unit) aiming the monitoring of
fetal using a non-invasive approach (signal collected from the mother). To
this end applied to the bio-signals collected, in
particular in the , have been explored. This collaboration
was recently formalized in the submission of a FCT project (January 20015):
FETALHRV: Fetal monitoring through noninvasive heart rate measurement.
▪ Currently, he integrates the FP7 project WELCOME, which focuses on the
using tele-monitoring solutions. In
this context, his research activities are directed to the study of physiological
signals used in the management of respiratory diseases (respiration and lung
sounds). One of the essential ideas to investigate is the use of
, to exploit the redundancy information, in order to
Curriculum Vitæ |
obtain more robust parameters that are achieved with a single channel. This
approach is being investigated by a post-doc (Luis Mendes) and a master
student (Nuno Canton), both coordinated by the candidate.
▪ Another current research direction is the development of
that combine data-driven approaches (extracted from databases) with the
incorporation of explicit clinical knowledge (knowledge-driven). Specifically,
his efforts currently addresses the development of
models by merging models learned from available databases
provided by the (10000 patients) with
existing information founded on clinical evidence (risk scores, for example).
This work is being conducted by a PhD student supervised by candidate
(Diana Mendes).
▪ To maintain the work that has been developed in collaboration with
POLIMI, it is expected in the near future the intensification of efforts to
develop strategies that enable .
The database that has been collected during the joint project FCT-
CARDIORISK (approximately 100 registers) will play a key role in this
future collaboration.
▪ As a result of his collaboration with companies in the clinical area, he has
recently established a partnership with company, to carry out a
pilot study in the Central region of Portugal concerning tele-monitoring
services for . The technical solution
will be provided by the mentioned company (OneCare platform), and will be
clinical coordinated by the Hospital University of Coimbra. Currently, the
first steps are being carried out on the identification and implementation of
ECG analysis algorithms by a master student (Liliana Pereira), coordinated
by the candidate.
As result of his experience in the clinical informatics area, it has been possible to
establish and maintain new partnerships. These has been the basis for new projects,
in particular European FP6 and FP7 projects and, more recently, HORIZON2020
projects. Given their relevance the following can be highlighted: FP6 MYHEART, FP7
HEARTCYCLE, FP7 HEARTWAYS and FP7 WELCOME. The first two were major
integrated projects (IP) in the eHealth area, enabling an income to the group of
approximately §fg700.000 Euros.
In the total, the projects negotiated with his direct participation allowed a funding
source of approximately 3 M € for the group to which he belongs (FP6 MYHEART,
FP7 HEARTCYCLE, FP7 WELCOME, FP7 HEARTWAYS, QREN ICIS, FCT CARDIORISK).

As part of his research activities he has been involved in the coordination and co -
coordination of several students: postdocs, doctoral, master and final year
internships.
He is currently supervisor of Dr. Luis Mendes, conducting research in the lung
sound analysis under the project FP7 WELCOME.
In particular, he has been developing algorithms and methodologies for detection of
crackles from lung sound. This validation has been carried out in collaboration with
the University of Thessaloniki. In the future it is expected to take advantage of
multi-channel approaches and fusion methods, in order to increase the robustness
and allow combining data from several sensors.
