UNIVERSITIES AND HOUSING

•  The creation and renovation of low- and middle- income housing is a critical need.

•  Universities (and their students) are not always viewed as helping to build stable, affordable neighborhoods

•  Opportunities to engage programs in human service and education in long-term ASL programs

PARKVIEW BEFORE RENOVATION

This renovation gave the physical structures of Parkview a “second chance,” and the Family Empowerment Project aims to give new residents a new chance at economic, educational and health goals.

AFTER RENOVATION

FAMILY EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM OVERVIEW

•  FEP promotes the development of local strategies to enable families to achieve economic independence and self sufficiency.

•  Families are no longer dependent on welfare. •  Supportive services available through FEP include

childcare, transportation, education, job training, counseling, financial fitness, and other services.

GOAL 2: ACCESS OF RESIDENTS TO THE INTERNET

•  All subsidized units will have computers and active internet connections

•  Families will report using the Internet to conduct job searches or on-line trainings and certifications.

•  University Connection: Training for youth and parents on educational resources though B Side Digital Inclusion

GOAL 3: ECONOMIC ADVANCEMENT

•  Resident participation in job/skill training activities. •  Development of an economic development plan •  Working to secure IDA’s for the participants •  Modest financial goal must be present in each plan University Connection: Grant Writing for AFI program

Through partnerships and programming the vision is to develop a social services program that will substantially improve educational, health, and economic outcomes for the participants of the FEP program.
